  • With VT, ECU and Navy, do we opt for an FCS team to pad the schedule or improve our strength of schedule?

  • Probably..but I hope not. Would rather get another P5 school or even a WKU/MAC rival.

  • Based on C-USA surviving, I think that season is our last in C-USA; so I'd like to see a home game with Ohio or Northern Illinois added to that OOC schedule.

  • Im sure a random FCS. Once Marshall is moved and settled into the SBC I would think it would be good idea to stop scheduling FCS games. I don't think the program is searching for wins to get bowl eligible anymore.

That being said in the new division the Herd will be playing in VA, GA, every year and NC, SC, every other year.

Marshall should try and schedule Ohio U every other year. That would give every class a chance to play in the battle for the bell both home and away while here. Maybe rotate through the other Ohio schools also to play away the years the Bobcats play here.

The years MU doesn't play App State away it would make sense to try and play one of ECU, UNC, NC State, Duke, Wake Forrest on the road. Giving the program a yearly NC road game.

Ideally 2 G5 rival games and 2 winnable P5 games every year H/H located in the recruiting footprint.

  • Question for those that might know, Id always be excited to play teams that I could easily drive to from Huntington like perhaps UK, Louisville, Cincinnati, Ohio U, Ohio St, Miami (OH), WVU, Pitt, VT, Virginia and perhaps Maryland. My question is though, where are the highest concentrations of Marshall Alumni outside of Huntington and what away games allow them to see the Herd in person?

Based on away games, we had estimates of anywhere between 15-20k to watch the Clemson game and about 15k for the South Carolina game. I'd say the Carolina's have more Herd fans.

I would guess that the highest concentration of Marshall Alumni outside Huntington, WV would be Ohio and Kentucky first and second.  Then North Carolina.  Large contingents in Florida, SC, Virginia, New York and Maryland/DC.

I heard we were likely playing JMU next season if we enter the Sunbelt early. They would replace the App game.

  • I'm wondering a lot more who will be coaching Notre Dame when we play there NEXT season, Sept. 10th, in our first road game in the 22 season.  Open with Norfolk State at the JOAN (believe they are the biggest, or at least one of, rival of Coach Huff's Alma Mater, Hampton),   After ND, we return home for what surely will be a "payback" game with Appy.  After an open date, we conclude OOC play at Bowling Green, always an "easy" place for the Herd to play, on October 1st, as of now.

  • Thanks herd fans, I know this isn?t what this thread is about, but I think we should start scheduling to provide more interest. I think the Sun Belt helps us reach a lot of our alumni areas. In regards to OOC I think we should schedule one in state P5 (WVU) for local alumni, schedule one out of state P5 particularly in alumni areas not reached by conference play (Cincinnati, Ohio St, Maryland, Florida, UCF, etc). Then schedule two G5 rivals (ECU, Ohio U, Miami OH), only exception would be a G5 in a strong alumni such as Charlotte or USF. Absolutely no FCS.

Long answer short since WVU doesn?t have availability for 2023 then we go after a money game with another P5. FCS gives you a win, but kills interest and hurts you in the long run.

So was Morris Harvey once.  We've moved on.
"On rainy days, the early justices would enliven case conferences with wine. On other days, even if the sun was shining, Chief Justice John Marshall would order wine anyway, saying, 'Our jurisdiction is so vast that it must be raining somewhere.' "

  • WVU is a very unlikely option, IMO.  Especially with their league playing 9 conference games yearly.  WVU schedules, currently, a home FCS opponent, a "name" FBS rival as part of a home and home, usually within reasonable travel distance, see Pitt, VA Tech, Maryland, etc.  Then they either have deals for games, home and home, with the likes of ECU, or 2 for 1, like they have with Ohio U.  Believed Mike Hamrick steadfastly ruled out the latter during his tenure.

  • It would be great to pick WVU back up but only has h/h and not every year. Maybe once every 4 or something the most.

Virginia Tech, NC State, Louisville, Cincinnati, Purdue, ect... draw about as good a crowd with out all the BS. Also the return game puts Marshall football in front of different markets and different recruiting grounds.

I'm not a fan of paying out of state FCS programs or taking a P5 pay game. If our basketball team continues to play well we could always use them as part of the deal. We give a lower P5 a basketball game in return for a football H/H.

Does DD have any kind of say in that? I am under the impression that DD does a lot of the OOC basketball scheduling, or has major input in it. I would find it odd to not include him in that decision.
Herdmeister should know more about this.

  • with the B12 actually going to 12 schools, i'd imagine wvu will have a 4th OOC slot to schedule in the future.

I think we need to face the fact that a 2 for 1 is a great deal for any P5 team as long as there?s a little money involved. We should be in place of their ECU or Ohio U games.

Do you really think they would offer, and make, that deal with MU?  The 2-1 is with Ohio U.  ECU I believe was a home and home contract.  No way they would give MU a one for one.  AD Lyons is about as big a JERK as Huggy Bear when it comes to Marshall.  And we all know, or should know, what their foot-in-mouth clown of a President is all about.  Would suspect athletically many higher ups in Morgantown would prefer no involvement with Marshall entirely.  Right now the personal relationships between the Coaches at both schools in sports like baseball and men's soccer makes competition in those sports possible, and even an enjoyable and good competition between both schools, IMO.
