  • Any "rumors" on how  the AD search is progressing? MU hired Carr Sports on Dec. 13 and announced the members of the search committee. I would guess things were a little slow with the holidays, but I would expect they must have reviewed some names?

  • Another thing that slowed the search was the wait for President Smith to take over.  Not many qualified people would apply for an AD position knowing that the President is about to change if their job is stable in their current position.  The new president could want to bring in his/her own people.  Now that President Smith has taken over more people or maybe even better qualified people may apply.

If you read the article (dated December 13), Smith was involved with picking the selection committee. Smith was officially the incoming president so I doubt if his transitioning slow it down. It seem clear that Smith was involved at the beginning. The below information is from CarrSports which was hired by Marshall. JMO.

"According to President Jerome A. Gilbert, who is stepping down as president at the end of December, he and incoming president Brad D. Smith have formed a nine-person search committee charged with advancing a slate of finalists for consideration.

Gilbert said he and Smith, who have been working closely on the transition, believe that identifying a new athletic director is one of the highest priorities for the university and agreed not to wait until Smith officially begins his presidency on Jan. 1, 2022, to start the search. Smith will make the final hiring decision, with an announcement expected in February."

  • i heard somewhere that they received more applications than expected; and from a diverse group. That's good. Should give the committee a nice selection of candidates. I'd still prefer someone from the outside who is experienced, an excellent fundraiser and someone who make themselves known to the common fan. O'Malley has said he is staying regardless, that's great for Marshall.

I would say that is a safe bet.  I imagine interviews will start shortly and someone will be hired in February.  From looking at a timeline when the new president started officially.  A search firm haired in December.  The past couple weeks would allow for research on candidates and schedule interviews. Next week would set up for one week if interviews and the next week as well.

I like O?Malley and if given a chance I think he would work out well.  He would be his own person and not what ADs of yeses past were.  He has learned a lot over the years and he knows first hand what needs to be done whether facilities or environment at our events.  My comments also don?t come from someone that knows him personally.  I have met him once but have been around and listened to him speak etc more than a few times.  It wouldn?t bother me if he got the job. If he doesn?t I hope he stays around and gets a bump in pay.  He would be a good resource.

I find it hard to believe that someone would stay in the AD as long as he has if their input or ideas weren't valued. If he is aware of the needs and made them known; yet was rebuffed or dismissed, why is he still here? If that were me, I would have bolted a long time ago.

  • I doubt Mr. Gilbert had much imput on the selection committee....but as a courtesy Mr. Smith allowed his presence. Why would one want a president who didn't want to be here to help select a committee? I also would say Mr. Smith has been very busy interviewing already for this position. One think that large corporations such as he has been directing don't let thinks slip out. I am confident he has something in writing from each committee member as to a "Hush, Hush, Keep your mouth shut" type agreement.

  • Why would it need to be a secret?  I'd kick out a list of people that are interested and get a good buzz going about who we will choose.  I mean the guy will arguably be one of the most public faces of the university.  Shouldn't hurt them to be used for a little publicity and excitement around here.  Too much of this hush hush crap here already.  Use it.  Create interest.  Create fans.  Just because Marshall might go a different direction doesn't mean these guys won't be right for other schools.  The only people that need to be kept quiet are those who are currently sitting ADs under contract.  Anyone from any other walk of life should be exploited.

But MUther, the hush-hush, CIA veil of secrecy has been the norm and modus operandi in and around MU, its overall administrations AND its Athletic Department administration for about a half century or so, I would wager.  Must be something in the air, . . . or maybe in the water, in Huntington!!

  • The committee was expected to have the finalists identified by early next week. Then final interviews next week. AD named early February.
