  •  . . . per Coach D'Antoni on his radio show this evening.  Coach indicated that he and his staff are/would be interested in obtaining an experienced guard for next season.  Mentioned the "portal", which for some of us, including me, is a breath of fresh air!  Danny had been questioned by a caller, texter, etc., about his recruits.  Talked about the 2 recruits, a big guard and a front line player, a 7-footer, signed from the high school ranks in the earlier signing period.  Briefly discussed some players who may or will not be back next year.  Sounds as if another guard, particularly with EXPERIENCE, is the top priority in the remaining recruiting for 2022-23.

  • The big guard is 6-8 Jacob Conner who so far is having a great season. His team Alter HS is ranked #2 in Ohio.

  • He needs to pick up at least 2 quick guards. A 6?8 guard is going to get blown right by just like our guards this year.

We have to be able to beat other teams off the dribble and stop other teams from beatin our slow team off the dribble.

1 guard is not going to do it.

  • I'd like to get 2 portal guards and a bigger guy for the middle, mobile, good defender.

  • Obviously, he expects or has been given some indication he will be our coach next year?

  • I really question if Danny has the stomach to release players from their scholarship in order to create room to make the necessary moves to improve the roster.  I'm leaning toward hiring a new coach who is willing to use the portal to maximize the talent on the roster.

definitely safe to say it sounds as if he WANTS/PLANS on coming back.  with no AD in place, who SHOULD ultimately make the call, i certainly hope he hasn't been given any kind of indication he'll be back.  that would appear as if someone's already planning on overriding a potential AD decision.  >:(

i agree but I'd like to see Conner play (i haven't tried, but they might be on youtube/other like a lot of other HS games??)

Rockin Herd Fan and miltonherdfan, if Danny is willing to make changes then i'm more than willing to support him.  i think he definitely deserves that much respect and i think he'll get it from all MU admin.  we'll see how it goes, though.

  • He's still being paid to be the coach, so he should continue to prepare as such, even if that ends up not being the case.

  • i hope this team can still turn things around so the year is not a complete loss, to lesson the cloud hanging over next year.

    but if i'm speculating-
i hope Anochili-Killen and Kinsey stay.  i think Taylor also, he has had some really good all-around stats most years, stays busy, good team player.  Early has improved this year, especially D, but is it enough, is his upside better than guys in the last two classes??  i think i'd want most, if not all, of the last two recruiting classes to stay, but i'm not sure (would like to see what a healty Fricks can do).  no matter who stays, they all have to bring shooting/FT % up and improve all fundamentals, move better, stay busy with purpose, especially on D.

  • I doubt the new AD will bring DD back with this meltdown and results the past few years.

However, if he does come back, it?s not going to get better unless he brings in great JUCO/GT players:

Point guard, shooting guard and 5 man

Starters, not contributors or we will blow donkey again

maybe i lack understanding, but i can't think of any reason you'd want to look at the portal this time of year.

to clarify, maybe at the end of the regular season, at least.

I feel like at this point a new AD is coming in too late to assess the situation. You don't want to hastily fire an alumni/family donor coach and I guy that had success just a few years ago. It's not like we are in our 3rd year of .500 ball. AD can evaluate fully next season and pull the trigger if decided.

you could very well be right.  but i'm glad our standards used to be higher than '3 yrs of .500 ball' when we dumped herrion.  this yr is playing out every bit as much a dumpster fire as herrion's last (11-22, 4-12), & he was only 2 yrs removed from a 2nd consecutive 20-win season & NIT berth.  not to mention, we owed him a ridiculous buyout on top of all that (that we probably won't owe dan) . . . & we still pulled the trigger.  we need a roster purge of this yr's squad just like we needed from herrion's last team.

Yes, our standards are and should be higher. I'm just saying to an outsider coming in as AD, I don't think it's a easy immediate decision.

Herrion was not an important alum and had player behavior issues. He had lost the team. A lot depends on who the AD is. If it's internal then sure they can decide now.

The thing that gives me pause of whether Danny will do what is necessary to improve the roster is something that Herdmeister posted in another thread where he said something to the effect that Danny was not going to renew someone's scholarship this past offseason but he couldn't bring himself to pull the trigger.  Also Danny will be 75 year old when next season starts.  He may have the energy of someone a fraction of his age, but at some point his age has to factor into a players choice of whether or not to come here.  Take Connor as a for instance.  If he stays all 4 years Danny will be 79 years old by the time he graduates!!!  When Danny was hired I thought if we can get 5 or 6 years out of him before he retires then I would consider his hiring a success.  He is now in year 8.  I appreciate everything Danny has done for Marshall, but I think it is time for us to move on from him.

what i meant was, that anybody who is in the portal at this current time of year probably isn't worth even looking at, right?  that's why i'd think you'd want to wait another month or more until after the end of the season
