  • That was great. Very inspiring. I don?t remember him getting into a fight with another tight end and ending up being hospitalized though.

    I didn't either.  I just did a search and found this thread - https://www.herdfans.com/12thman/index.php?topic=11967.0

Looks like there were rumors at that time that it was a fight.  Wonder who the other TE was?

I was just reading that thread as well. Looks like the rumor Krash heard was true. I?m wondering who the other tight end was as well. I wonder if it was Cody Slate? Cody and Lee went on to be pretty good friends. If it was Cody, it wouldn?t be the first time that a good friendship started with a fist fight.

  • Wow!  This is really touching.  I shall never forget how polite this young man is.  In the several conversations we had around Huntington, he never failed to address me as "Sir."

  • Brian Shope maybe just looking at the rostered TEs and age.

I don?t think Ive shared this. Back in 2020 I was dropping off a kid after practice and he tells me an NFL player is his neighbor. He plays for the Bills. Quickly put two and two together it?s Lee Smith being Knoxville. The kid said that Lee would play with the neighborhood for hours when home. He was glowing talking about him. Covid cancelled our availability to get him in, but that alone made an impression. For all the money, travel, injury he always had time for the kids and enough time they thought of him as a friend.

Thank you for sharing this video.

  • Wasn't it Yurachek who "had a discussion" with Chase Litton? Is this a tight end thing?

I always heard it was Joe Bragg.

  • That TE room in 2006 had some players and tough kids - Bragg, Shope, Matt Parkhurst, Mike Nolan in addition to Lee and Cody Slate.

  • Great watch.  But, I have to tell you, my experience with Lee Smith?s dad was excellent.  I ate pizza with him at Giovanni?s the day of Lee?s first football game at Marshall.  He loved Lee and his family very much.  He was so proud of Lee.  And, he was very thankful for the opportunity that Marshall had given Lee.

  • Was Joe Bragg released from the team or face any consequences for that fight? By the sound of it, Lee was jacked up pretty bad. Emergency surgery, feeding tube, vent, etc. are usually not the results when somebody just ?whoops somebody?s ass?. Sounds like this was a violent altercation and Bragg was angry enough to inflict some major damage. I don?t know the situation, nor do I know the two parties that were involved, and I  may be totally off base but it just sounds a little extreme for a fist fight.

  • It was/should have been an easy job after Bob Pruett and the ?we are Marshall movie?, he failed?those that came, came because of what Playing for championships did for MU?i can?t imagine whatever or whomever university in America could have ever done to screw this whole thing up as badly as we have?all we got left is a We Are Marshall chant that hardly younger people know or care about?

I talked to Lee Smith a few times, he was always hanging out with Cody Slate. Lee was a very humbled young man and so was Slate. As for the fight all it takes is for a punch to land in the wrong area and it can end deadly. Even Ali had his jaw broke and rewired. I'm happy Smith recovered and is doing very well for himself. Lee is an inspiration for any young person growing up in a dysfunctional environment.
