  • I was still living in Huntington, working in the music dept of Mack & Dave's, when those discussions were happening. The 'super block' was basically a multi-acre empty paved & gravel flat place. The consensus among us hoy-ploy was that it made no sense for Huntington to have two arenas basically 10-12 blocks apart. Both were not exactly built to first class standards.

Oh no, elginherd, don't forget the THIRD facility!!  Remember, Cabell County operated/managed/owned the Memorial Field House just east, within walking distance, of campus along 5th Avenue.  So you had Huntington, Marshall and the County, in a time when the City and County were already in a steady DECLINE and both losing population, all trying to operate successfully and keep afloat, THREE arena type facilities, each with some serious deficiencies.  Instead of ONE First Class, showpiece Quality facility that the City, County and University would all be proud of, and benefit from, they ended up with essentially the 2nd rate facilities that we see today!!  That's the Huntington, and Huntington Area, way on how NOT to do things right!!  MU essentially too.  What a CLUSTERF$*K!!!

  • The original renderings had it at 14k seats, with no bleachers.  Although that was probably too ambitious, the BofR sticking their collective fingers in the recipe took it down to 10,250, bleachers in the upper sections, no A/C, no separate indoor track that necessitated the sliding seats (that never worked and eventually broke entirely), cheap seating that pitched a person forward in their seats, mandated multi-purpose uses that created a sub-standard 25 meter pool rather than the originally designed 50 meter one and a host of other "cheapening" of the facility that we're still paying for today.

After reluctantly acquiescing to the mandated changes, the then-administration threatened to resign if the seating fell below 10k.  The threat also included a promise to go to the Gazette to list the improvements approved by the BofR to New Mountaineer Field at the same time it mandated the cuts to the Cam.

As an aside, and prior to the building of the Cam, the then-administration tried to work with the City to build a mini-Rupp type arena at, about, 14th Street and was told to pound sand as it was "too far from downtown".

    And now you know...

Yeah, they put the lower seats on some type of "retractable" mechanisms which apparently didn't work, or broke down, from the get-go!!  I do remember that the "new" CAM had what was called a "tartan" playing floor.  Believe it was what the Univ. of Tennessee had had in their arena, and I believe when Stu Aberdeen came to MU he was an advocate for such a floor.  Whether that was the main reason it was installed in the CAM I don't know.  Whether it was too soft and thus the retractable seats didn't work well on such a surface may have been a problem.  Believe when we got rid of those retractable seats, we also go a "conventional" playing floor!

  • Yeah, I'm not a fan of this ether.  As others have pointed out, the black doesn't really POP that way a nice Kelly Green does, and the various fonts/scripts make it seem a bit disorganized and jumbled.  But it is what it is.

  • I just hate messing up the low hanging fruit. First the football field now this.

If you go kelly green virtually everyone will like it. Going black creates unnecessary division in your fan base.

  • I know it may be an "UNNECESSARY" expense.....but I would like to see ALL Kelly(sp?) green seats. I was watching NC tonight and their seats match their school colors. I just feel when you think of MOST year in/out schools such as NC, Kentucky, Southern Cal, Michigan, Ohio State.....you just know who you are watching on TV without seeing or hearing their name. When one walks onto the MU campus....there should be NO DOUBT whatsoever of the school's true colors. When you see the WV insignia, it is very clear who they are and what their school colors are.
I'm ok if you disagree....but we can still be Herdfans even if we do disagree.

  • There should be the state of WV in the middle of the floor with , in good old block letters , Marshall University wrote in a circle around the state . Block script/font never goes out of style , the slanting style thats used now has 90's wrote all over it.

Green looks awful on the football field. Looks old from day one.

  • The court will look much different come game day. Add green media tables with add banners, green chairs for the benches, baskets with green padding, courtside seating with fans likely in green, cheerleaders, etc. Probably won?t appear as black as it looks now. This is the best looking logo for Marshall athletics and is now on the center of the football field, basketball court and soccer pitch; behind home plate of softball. Consistent brand marketing helps with national recognition.

I kinda would like to see the footprints return for Bruce Morris. It?s a one of a kinda marker that draws everyone to put their feet in that spot. It may be in the plans but not in the picture idk

You're right this is why we need to be "consistent" and stay with our green and white and not black!!!!!!!! We're not being consistent trying to be like other schools with adding black as a dominant color.. Sounds so hypocritical to say one thing and do the opposite..

  • I think the new floor looks pretty good.

Think of the black as more of a neutral background color to allow the green and white to stand out. There's plenty of green on the floor, especially with the size of the midcourt M. I do think the THUNDERING HERD on the baselines needs to be outlined in white.

Next up should be changing the color of the seats. Having that Ohio/UAB puke green dominate the arena is far more of a travesty than some black on the court.

  • The floor looks fine but some good points being made.  Multiple types of script and I would prefer green baselines and lanes.  I don't mind alternate uniforms but it does seem that with many of the teams at MU we wear a lot of black in a regular basis.

No it was President Dan Angel that installed the Michigan State dark green look.

Marcum started in 2002. I think the dark green trend started sometime around 1998, which was the first year we had that color in our end zones. The Cam also had the permanent chairbacks installed for the 1998-99 season.

Hamrick took over in 2009, and 2010 or 2011 was when we switched back to kelly green apparel.

  • My memory has this different.  We became a Nike school and they only offered the darker green.  Prior to that Zides did a lot of our uniforms and team merchandise.

  • Hunter Green came in the same era as Mark Snyder, led by the same influential people; it was much easier to get because it is a high volume standard color, etc.

  • The dark green became official with the new logos and branding from 2001.

And I don't think the new floor was polished in that picture. I suspect it will shine Saturday.

No I don't think that is correct.  It was in the 90s

Again, if I'm not mistaken, then President Dan Angel changed our color to a darker green.

It would have been James Gilley in 97.

2001 was when it was official, although uniforms had trended darker before that. Don't quote me in the exact here, but Marshall changed its official color to Pantone 357c or something like that, which was a darker green than before.
