  • Not a prisoner of the moment but I have watched several games and this is real good team we need to get behind.  Most prepared and under control team we have had.

We can and should win the SBC.  We were terrible last year and very average for a few years but this team is very enjoyable and may not lose.  We hustle and pass very well and play defense.

  • Still a lot of games to be played. This team is good. Just have to wait and see as the season progresses.

  • Our starts have been so much better compared to last year. Seemed like we were always fighting back because we were down so much early. Have really come out focused and ready to play to start games this year.

Agree. Even if our offense is a little sluggish out of the gate, our defense keeps things under control until the offense heats up.

  • 2 things this team needs to do in second half. Keep plying tough D and play smart on offense taking good shots after and no quick shots.

Might add keeping Duquesne off the offensive boards.

Nitpicking as this was a great win but we can get better:

    Make free throws

    Use timeouts

    Please dunk the ball

    Go Herd!

  • First half was excellent. Second half - did what we needed to do to get the win. Gotta rebound better. Like the zone, with our length, DD needs to use it more often.

  • yes, well said- "more prepared and under control" this year.  playing much better as a team than most of DD's years- last year seems to have woken up staff and players.

and yes, it's frustrating when we allow offensive boards unless we win, haha.  we know the DD style, it's potential and it's potential for disaster, basically rests on running, putting up a high number of high % shots and hitting a high % of those shots- in which case offensive rebounds and defense aren't quite as important.

now, this year is a little different- Handlogten in the paint on D + OAK when he's got his head in the game.  i think we got a little better (combination of substitutions) this game than the last when H was on the bench, but make no mistake, when he's on the bench, it ain't the same.  since Penava's great half of a season we've been frustrated not having that constant shot altering pressure.  but H brings better offense, ball handling and passing capabilities, as well.

I don't recall anybody fouling out either- is that correct?  point is, you've got to have best 7 playing D all the time, at least, equal to or better than your opponent.

FTs improved in the 2nd half, i think

Yes clearly you were dead wrong about it and should not have been confidentially calling out other posters preseason and after the first game.

But, at least you are here supporting team now and recognize what you don't know.  I think we still have others here that are holding out hoping to be correct, rather than enjoying success.

Oh just stop with this sort of nonsense?.we?ve heard the same stuff EVERY off season. Some made Nikolic out to be Pistol Pete etc.

Everyone had every right to be skeptical. The basketball practice reports are 1/however many years DD has been here.

If you want to take a positive post and spin it negative then OK.  Facts are Dan is a 500 coach over 8 years and we heard that Bennet would be the next Shak, Early doesn't even see the floor, go back and read what was written about those guys.  Dan tried to play a 10 man rotation over many seasons and never settled into a top 7 guys.  Those teams earned the criticism and this team is earning the praise.

Nonsense, and then you post about us saying Nikolic  was the next pistol Pete? Some of you get upset saying we over exxagerated and then we hear stuff like this. Truth is a few of you didn't want to believe what some of us were saying about these freshman and Curfman. Welcome back BTW!!!

  • The difference for me with this year's team as opposed to say, last year's team, is even when Duquense went on a little run to start the 2nd half and cut our lead in half in the first 4 minutes, I wasn't worried about the train going off the tracks.  Kinsey, Taylor, Curfman and Obinna showed some composure and grit to keep battling and at about the 10 minute mark I didn't think the game was really in question.  A couple poor possessions led to the lead dwindling but we continued to play unselfishly, the freshman stepped up, and the older guys kept grinding.  I actually thought the defense played pretty solid after the first 4 minutes of the 2nd half.  Guys were fighting for the ball and competing.  A lot to like about this squad.

    Facts

DD took us further than anyone in history.

DD will have coached our top two all time scorers in all likelihood.

Last fact is you were dead wrong about this team like many others.  It's ok to be wrong, but some here were belligerent and antagonistic about it.  So enjoy

Another difference, IM0, when you sit back and look at the team composition now as we approach the one third of the season is that Coach D. perhaps has his best mix of quality experience PLUS quality newcomers at one time that he has had while at MU.  Kinsey and Taylor have, it seems, been playing at MU forever.  After a year and a half of pretty extensive D1 competition, OAK is no long a "greenhorn".  Even guys not currently getting a lot of PT, like Goran, Marko and Early, have a solid base of experience if, at times, perhaps in the postseason with games back-to-back, etc., Coach has to go deeper into his bench.  Then, we have the newcomers, especially all the freshmen who are playing extensively.  To me the difference is that they are playing with enough VETERANS, who provide a steading hand, and guidance, unlike, perhaps in some past years.  Don't forget, Taylor is a transfer, even before the "Portal" became such a big deal in college basketball. Taylor played in a perennial good SO CON program, Furman, before coming to MU.  Now this year, we got Curfman, who has played 3 seasons at VMI.  So instead of blending a bunch of second year players, sophs but still relatively new to D1 basketball, at MU with another freshman class, Danny instead has the luxury of a core of experienced players, thanks in part to "transfers", to mix with some talented, but inexperienced freshmen.  A big difference, IMO.

Let's just hope going forward, Coach D. now sees the wisdom and the positive possibilities in mining the portal, not so much as in the bat-crap crazy wholesale use of it like we see at some schools.  Rather, as a means to obtain a quality player with experience to plug in at a key and needed position, like Curfman this season.  And like we obtained via a transfer, but pre-portal, in Andy Taylor.

  • Here's my take:
    1.  They trust each other and aren't expecting to have to do it all themselves individually
    2.  The young players are accepting coaching and learning, yet trusting in their own talents

It's fun to watch, and I hope they continue to grow.  Honestly, if someone steps up to replace Kensey, and the rest of them stay, I can foresee a tourney birth NLT next year. This year, winning the SBC will be harder than many expect, there are some good teams to play in our future.

We'll get a good look at our furture at UNCG soon enough, then the Toledo game.  I would expect us to dismiss Robert Morris in the same manner we have others this year, unless we have one of those very possible off days.  But they are no cake walk, they had a tough time with NKU, who beat UC on the same court.

  • RMU?s last 3 games, all on the road, have been solid with wins over Wright St., Central Michigan, and a close loss to No. Kentucky, who as said above, recently thumped Cincinnati. Coming home to host 8-1 Marshall will have RMU in a feisty mood. We had better no take them lightly.
