Why are Herd Fans afraid or against uniform changes?

  • During football season people were complaining about black in the uniforms,  now people are complaining about the black basketball uniforms.  I for one enjoy the change and think it?s nice.  For the most part a lot of schools have several different uniform combinations these days.  It makes us look more marketable to recruits and future students.  But as long as it gets the athletes fired up and motivated that is what counts!

  • Probably because our school colors are green and white not Purdue or Wake Forest black.  I don?t care either way but do like all white.  Some people have opinions and that?s what makes these boards fun and interesting.  Could you imagine if everyone loved being with 300Lb women.  Now that?s not good for discussion.  Herd looking pretty good so far and I?m pleasantly surprised.  Hopefully we keep the core 6 healthy the remainder of the year.  Go Herd!

  • I live the style of the new uniforms and like the black, just not as much as we wear them.  I like alternative uniforms in both sports but it seems we are wearing them more than green.

  • I don't have a problem with it.  I was more excited about different uniform combinations when I was younger, now I don't really care all that much as long as the uniforms aren't ugly like the ones that were introduced under Doc.  We've gone through periods of time under different coaches where they add a third color to the uniform.  In Sonny Randle's last season as coach he introduced yellow into the uniforms and we even wore yellow pants with green strips similar to the Green Bay Packers.  George Champ introduced silver into our uniforms with silver helmets and pants.  Over the years the color of green has run the spectrum from kelly green to dark green.

  • Mostly because some folks aren't happy if they aren't complaining and whining about something.

  • I do not like the black basketball uniforms.  I would love to see them in green.  When we wear them, I have to get used to not pulling for the team in white as I don't expect Marshall to be in black.  It is a personal preference for me as it makes this old fart know which team is mine.

  • In basketball I like the white or green. It just looks so much cleaner with the uniforms. But I do like the floor being black because that seems to really jump out and looks good.

*sigh* We have this discussion all the time, and it's always the exact same thing.  Some fans want us to keep our traditional look, thus support only green and white, with black being an accent color choice.  This is the camp I personally fall into.  The Herd colors are green and white and those SHOULD be the primary colors, with other colors, like black, being used to accent the green and white, but not be the primary color.  Other fans either love the various uniform options, including pretty much all black, or they don't care at all, saying things like 'wear pink as long as you win!'.  There really isn't a right or wrong opinion here, it's simply that, opinion and preference.

Personally I feel like we had a brand we established in the 90s and 00s that we have abandoned, and that's not a good thing.  I want folks to turn on a Marshall game and without seeing the scroll or score to know who is playing, I want them to be able to identify who we are in a second simply because we have that brand.  Some teams are simply iconic, and without seeing anything else, seeing a helmet or a uniform immediately identifies that team.  We once had that, or were on the verge, and it's kinda lost now.  I get that others think that isn't a big deal any more and have the opposite opinion.  But I look around my wall here in my office and I see Letwich, Pennington, Moss, Watts, etc on posters and pictures and everything is green and white with a touch of black.  That's who we were, and we are largely abandoning that.  Change isn't always bad...but nor is change always good, and reasonable Herd fans can disagree about what our uniforms should look like.

    Let's Go Herd!

    Championships: 1925 WVIAC, 1928 WVIAC, 1931 WVIAC, 1937 Buckeye Conference, 1988 Southern Conference, 1992 I-AA, 1994 Southern Conference, 1996 Southern Conference, 1996 I-AA (15-0), 1997 MAC, 1998 MAC, 1998 Motor City, 1999 MAC (13-0), 1999 Motor City, 2000 MAC, 2000 Motor City, 2001 GMAC, 2002 MAC, 2002 GMAC, 2009 Pizza Bowl, 2011 Beef O Brady Bowl, 2013 Military Bowl, 2014 Boca Raton Bowl, 2015 St. Petersburg Bowl, 2017 New Mexico Bowl, 2018 Gasparilla Bowl.

  • 1. Identification - you turn on a college game and see that bright kelly green, you immediately know you're watching Marshall.

    2. The home football uniform set we had from about 2010-13 were amazing, virtually the perfect uniform look.  Simple and clean, they popped the kelly green.  It's a GREAT look and we arbitrarily decided to move away from that.

    3. Black is overdone - here and everywhere.  Black alt uniforms were an overdone trend 15-20 years ago - basically every MLB, NBA, NFL, and NCAA team had alt black uniforms... It's now a dead trend - that we are just now going to.  I don't mind alt uniforms one-time a year, but since we've rolled it out black has been overdone here.

I also DISPISE the black uniforms being associated as a memorial tribute.  We wore traditional Marshall green and white uniforms for the first 46 crash anniversaries and looked "just like Marshall" and no one forgot about our past.  I think the intentional association of black and tacky marketing probably largely impacts my feelings about the black unform set.

Spears talks publicly about 'building Marshall's brand'.
Having uniforms that look like a large plurality of other colleges does not contribute at all to building the brand. The distinctive kelly green does.

When I wore Marshall swag while I was teaching in Albany GA (where Marshall has no local interest) people would engage me in conversation about the team or the plane crash. Same thing when I visted my daughter's family in Denver. The students would greet me with 'we are'.

For being a mid-major, Marshall's brand IS pretty big and recognizable. This black sh$# does nothing for promoting the brand.
In memory of Dr Daniel P Babb who taught so much to so many.

  • I can think of very few who hate the black. I think most enjoy it as an alternate. But with hoops it hasn't been an alternate. We haven't even worn green this year.

I think we have a tendency to take something cool and fun in small amounts and instead of keeping it that way we completely go overkill with it. (The endzones, the new hoops floor, stadium and truck wraps, wearing black jerseys so much it loses the novelty of it)

  • If you look at one complaint a lot of people have about the NBA is the uniforms changes. The whole statement, city etc look make great additional revenue streams, but you see the same comment over and over. "I was flipping through channels and couldn't tell who was playing. So I kept going."

People like identifiable branding. There's a reason Coke doesn't try to change the formula anymore. You know the red can. You know the McDonalds M. Same idea applies to uniforms. Oregons brand was built on the crazy uniforms. That's their brand. It doesn't have to be everyone else's.

Kelly green is going to pop off the screen. Black is just going to look like any of the other 50 teams who have black. I don't mind it a game. But when you integrate it all season, especially tv games, then I do.

Great post!  Although I really have no strong opinion one way or the other.  I agree with you. Black is cool and kids love it.  I think it would be ok to occasionally wear black, but green should be used 90% of the time.  The more I think about it in my mind the more I think MU is making a mistake by pushing black so much.  Marshall HAS built a brand, and, in that brand, the main color is Kelly Green.
