  • Well if that's how he feels, I hope his number never gets retired here..

Danny has been in touch with him on occasion and that is what he was told

  • I really, really like this kid he can play.

Makes me a little mad on offense at times being so passive but that will definitely come with time and experience.  If we can just get him to go up strong and dunk the ball everytime he?s around the rim he?ll be a walking double double but I really believe that will come with time like I said.

Agree. If that's the stipulation, give him the finger! Same with anyone else. We gave many of these kids a chance, helped them improve and grow as athletes and individuals. Gave them a free education - or the opportunity to get one.

I can see reaching out and extending an olive branch here and there but conditions like this - see ya!

I hope we do retire his uniform number someday, but with someone else's name on it.  Uniform number retirement is for career achievement and Whiteside didn't have an actual career here,  True dum@$$, I don't care how much he has made $, true dum@$S.

  • The thing is that he doesn't deserve to have his number retired by Marshall.  He only played one, albeit great year, at Marshall.  But one year doesn't equal a career.  Granted he's had a very good professional career, but that has nothing to do with what he did while he was at Marshall.  Having said that, I would allow him to "buy" his jersey retirement for a nice donation to the basketball program.

  • Very impressive for a FR especially. I agree strength and lateral agility are the two things he needs most physically.  His BB IQ seems really high, he doesn't get rattled, runs court well, and is a good passer.  Our defense is what has separated the most from last season and he is probably the biggest defensive factor imo. Way ahead of where Peneva was as a FR.  Would rather he work on mid range game and post moves than ever shoot from deep.

Whiteside was always a "me" guy imo.  But he was young and i'm glad things have worked out professionally for him.

  • After looking Whiteside up on Wikipedia, I?m willing to reconsider my opposition to retiring his number.

    Quote

In January 2017, Whiteside wired $2.75 million to attorney Michael Avenatti as the first payment in a $3 million-settlement with ex-girlfriend Alexis Gardner, who was represented by Avenatti in the settlement. Avenatti allegedly embezzled all but $194,000 of the $3 million that Whiteside paid in total,

If he?s willing to give Michael A 3 Million to retire a piece of @ss he ought to be willing to give us $30 million to retire his egotistical number.

Why not seems like everything else in college athletics is for sale now days.

  • Handlogten is a transformative talent in Danny?s schemes on both ends of the floor. Just like Peneva was. He may not yet be the offensive player that Peneva was in his last year, but that will come. Micah is already a better defender and rebounder that Peneva. Plus Micah has a more aggressive streak.

Avenatti was just sentenced to 14 yrs in prison for stealing from multiple clients.  People throw money at a guy when a media apparatus builds a guy up to be a hero when he is really a grifter. Much like Bernie before he Madeoff with a bunch of other peoples money and this FTX crypo exchange guy.

Hopefully we'll want to retire Handlogten's jersey someday. As far as him getting other offers after this year you can nip that in bud by not putting yourself in portal and also realizing the grass isn't always greener.  Tanner Holden, btw, is not helping himself much at OSU as far as professional prospects go. He isn't starting and averaging about 5 pts per game in about 16 minutes of action. Looks as if he is finding it tough to get into a rhythm in such limited time. Imagine him as another wing player/rebounder on this year's Marshall team. Scary.

Exactly. Sometimes it's best to be at a place that plays a fun style and a coach that gives you freedom. Some of these kids make huge mistakes transferring.

  • IMO, Handloten(sp) is one that will have to b watched carefully in the NIL mix. Tons of big name schools would salivate at the prospect of poaching a 7" with his upside. Again, Just MO

I agree. IMO the staff should be raising all the money they can so when needed they have it.

And that is why I said we should be raising money now and not waiting. We should have a fund built up for anyone that may leave. Cars, cash, restaurant vouchers etc all add up from  business etc,,,

  • Except for the real creme of the crop I think the players and their parents need to look at the whole thing realistically.  Your getting a free education and that's worth a lot these days. Of course if the coach is pushing you to leave or you don't feel your reaching your potential than that's another story.  Most of the student athletes that come here are not creme of the crop and their pro prospects rely heavily on playing time and development. I don't see where bribing them to stay is a good strategy for anyone involved.

Then we may as well give up on wanting good teams and keeping a good team. If we don't make an attempt at NIL like everyone else. Or just give up.

We definitely need to be competitive with the level of spending by Sun Belt teams.  The problem is the amounts being spent isn't public knowledge.  The biggest difference in the old cash for janitorial days is the payments are legal now, but still not public knowledge.

  • He is scrappy!  NBA is where the money is and DD system prepares these types of kids for that transition.  He may get paid and go to a school where he plays with his back to the basket.  Short term gains don't always lead to whats best for long term success!  He seems like a smart kid.  I will watch him and be happy for the time we have him.  Hope he stays around for a few years!

  • There was an article in today's Knoxville News-Sentinel about NIL money in college football.  According to the article -- "Those knowledgeable about sports collectives and the NIL deals they help negotiate will tell you it will take at least $15 million a year to compete at the highest level in college football."   $15 million!

The writer of the column also said that schools like the University of Tennessee will be looking to lure away successful athletes from other (presumably smaller) programs rather than take chances with unproven high school recruits.

The rich are definitely going to get richer.....

  • He would be better off in the long run to stay here where can be properly developed for the NBA. If he sticks with DD and he works hard, then he will be a 1st Rd Draft pick and make millions of dollars for years to come.
