  • We get it you don't like soccer and we don't care what you think.

Those of us with brains and vision can see the future and know soccer will only build from here over the next 20 years. We are already a National power and we will continue to cultivate and grow the program.

That is fine and no hard feelings here. I personally enjoy watching a good game of monopoly more. Most boring thing I have ever witnessed in my entire life.

  • I love soccer. It?s my favorite sport except for basketball and had I grown up playing it I might  prefer it.  It wasn?t always that way, but my boys grew up with it and both  played competitively. My youngest son is 30 and still playing in very competitive rec leagues in Seattle with and against guys that played lower level pro leagues and college soccer.

In order to understand the game I went  to coaching and referee clinics. I played rec league games into my 40s but never well. Like pretty much any sport the more you understand soccer, the more you appreciate it.  When people ask if I played when I was growing up I tell them soccer had not been discovered in WV when I was a kid.

All that said, college soccer will never compare it with football and basketball. Unlike those sports soccer is not tied in to educational institutions. The best players go to club academies. I think only a handful of the players on the USMNT ever played college soccer.

I love that Marshall has a top soccer program, but I can?t see college soccer becoming much more than it is today.

  • My son played soccer and other sports when he was young. He went through periods of being interested in football; then baseball and now he is a big soccer fan. The only sports he watches  on TV are the Euro leagues, the highest level of soccer? He always asks me for MU football updates, but he doesn't follow The Herd like when he was younger. I dropped him off at the Fort Lauderdale airport on Saturday after visiting me. I came home by the Florida Turnpike and I saw some huge youth soccer complexes near the turnpike with cars lining the highway. I wonder if or when soccer might overtake the US sports.

I agree that it will never take over Marshall football or basketball. Not going to happen. Or for that matter in college sports across the country. It will never get more popular in the USA over football or basketball.

  • That statement is incorrect.
All the athletic scholarships are year-to-year. They are not guaranteed. That issue did come up in court cases that led to the curent NIL situation---that the institutions were only on the hook for one year while the athletes were subject to the whims of those institutions about where & when they could seek a new school.

That is why I said a true 1 year scholarship.  I know they renew now each year but scholarships were never taken away and most schools fulfilled the 4 years for each athlete.

Never?  I distinctly recall Herrion running off a couple or 3 players his first year.

No one ever said it would over take either sport, but to think our football team or basketball team could ever be a national power, or come close to a national championship is delusional. Too many roadblocks in the way. I am proud that we at least have the one national championship at the highest level.

Sure it's nice but personally I can never get into it. I'll guarantee if you asked 100 people on the street who just one the college NC about 2 people would know.

Too bad ole Tom didn't run off about 3 or 4 more.  He might have lasted a lot longer at MU had he done so!!

That's fine, heck 15 years ago I would have said same.  I don't say this to be critical, but I'm guessing you don't watch the game enough to understand all of it.  No game is fun to watch if you really don't get it.  Most people that don't understand it don't like the lack of scoring.

People understand football and baseball so they can watch it.  Reality is, baseball has 7 guys standing around watching one guy throwing to another guy, while one guy tries to hit the ball.  If I didn't understand it, I'd say BORING.  Football, the actual action during a four hour game is minimal...if I wasn't a fan and didn't understand it...I'd say BORING.

Soccer is nonstop action with incredible athleticism, skill and stamina.  I don't know how anyone could watch high level soccer like FIFA, world cup etc and not be wowed by the skill, athleticism and stamina.

Of the three primary American sports, basketball is the only one that compares to soccer in terms of nonstop action and basketball does have constant scoring.

Personally, I used to be a big baseball fan but that has faded over the last 20 years or so.  I still enjoy Football, basketball and now soccer and have season tickets to all three at MU.

I remember him screwing over a guy that he brought in that still had a year of eligibility - - Aundra Williams? sent him packing for a better player at the last minute.  I also believe he had a NQ here sitting out Amayo?? that sat out but no scholly available so he played like one game or two and then left second semester.

I understand baseball, even played it my entire youth from teeball until I graduated High School. And I still find baseball boring to watch. lol

I enjoyed playing it but for me, it's not a good game to watch.

other than the dramatics, that sums it up for me.
that's not to say at the time that i wasn't glad to get him at MU, but there were many flashes of ego, laziness and other negatives that, for me, culminated in that 2010 CIT where he just quit in that QtrF game against App St (i think it was).

but yes, i agree that Handlogten so far is more mature, far better attitude, far better teammate and not a bit lazy.  Hope he works hard and reaps the NBA reward one day, but for now i hope he helps take us to another level in the near future.  best to him

Boy this hit the nail on the head. What a waste if talent. There probably isn't a better skilled big man anywhere. But his attitude, ego and disrespect for his teammates held him back. I remember at Marshall when he would roll his eyes at teammates etc.

For players transferring into another school their financial aid is guaranteed until they graduate, transfer to another school or go professional based on NCAA ruling in August of this year.

    https://www.ncaa.com/news/ncaa/article/2022-08-31/ncaa-division-i-board-adopts-changes-transfer-rules?amp

Student-athletes who transfer will be guaranteed their financial aid at their next school through graduation, the Division I Board of Directors decided Wednesday. The board met virtually.

That change and other adjustments to transfer rules recommended by the Division I Transformation Committee are intended to provide greater clarity for student-athletes and member schools within the transfer landscape across all sports. The rules changes are effective immediately.

"The decision to adopt the transfer proposal today reflects the Board's commitment to enacting transformational changes in college sports," said Jere Morehead, president at University of Georgia and chair of the Board of Directors.

NCAA rules now will require any school that considers athletics when awarding scholarships to transfer student-athletes to provide that scholarship for the rest of a student's five-year eligibility or until they complete the requirements for their bachelor's degree, unless the student transfers again or engages in professional athletics opportunities.
