  • Noticed that 24/7 and Rivals both have Marshall ranked outside the top 100 based on current commitments.  Rivals has FCS Campbell and Sounth Dakota State ranked ahead of Marshall.  Marshall has approximately 10 commitments.

I'm the last person to rely on internet recruiting services.  Thought it was worth mentioning for those that put credit in those type websites.

  • In this day and age, the transfer portal is huge. So I?m guessing schools like us will save back a lot of scholarships for the transfer portal.
The right way is always the right way- Coach Huff

  • When I was researching my book, that's one thing I found is vexing a lot of high school coaches who have the tweener kids they are trying to get a scholarship...where used to schools would sign 20+ high school kids to scholarships, most are down to the mid teens today today to allow flexibility. Shameless plug for my book:

Number of commits is never a good indicator.  It's always about the average rating.  All ours are 3 star.  I doubt very much the FCS recruits are.  We don't need what we don't need and we'll leave a few slots for transfers.  We graduated some great players but we have good depth and are still strong in some positions.  No reason to take high school players to backload deep positions.  If number of recruits mattered you'd be punishing teams that recruited well over a long period of time and had good depth and class balance.  That's completely backwards.

  • I am sure Huff and staff are in touch with kids every day. The Portal has certainly changed the way coaches recruit and fill their rosters.

I give he and the staff big kudos for the fact that all of their first class made on campus and were eligible. A far cry from Doc who usually lost half his class to grades, didn't show up, or left before ever playing a game.

  • Hard to recruit when you don?t know who is staying or leaving.  Have to be patient.

And that madam is why the lower you go in the football hierarchy of today, the harder it is to run a program.

  • i'm good at playing mr obvious, haha
safe to assume Huff knows a bit more than i do about which players might leave.  also, hope we keep critical/proven-good coaches too.

we hear about culture, good and bad, during the tenure of every coach we've ever had.  my outsider perception so far about Huff is he seems to be consistent enough overall with coaches and players.

i have to remind myself that HCs probably don't do much hands-on recruiting, they rely on their staff.  i think it's the same for all other aspects too, meaning, day to day after HC decides which direction/s to go when considering any aspect, and Huff seems to have made it clear what he wants.  ex. priority recruiting the surrounding area first/as much as possible, although the portal changes that quite a bit.

hopefully, the staff will do as good a job or better than they did last recruiting cycle and there's no reason yet to think they won't.  i'm sure they want to win the SBC as badly as we do.

i'm still torn on the QB question/direction (dual threat vs other) but i'll repeat that i still have high hopes Fancher's pass game catches up to his very good run capabilities

year three is a critical year for me and i'm pulling for the Herd and Huff.

  • In my opinion FCS has become what Junior College used to be.  Sad for the Jucos

I don't know, I think FCS, JUCOS and CCs could come out well in that they are going to have better high school players fall to them as colleges take fewer players. They will lose some, but at least for the short term, they may be able to put better players on the field.

  • Well, if the bowl game continues as it is going currently, Huff and his staff will have some + + + + recruiting ammo to take with them as they head out right after the bowl game on some recruiting trips.  The fall letter of intent/signing period starts Weds.

Listened to the Metro News guys a few days ago talking about WVU Coach Brown's plans for recruiting this off season.  Will sign some players in the early/December period.  Will hold some scholarships back to use in the February signing period!  Will hold some additional scholarships back to use later in 2023, spring, etc., on possible JUCO players, Portal transfers, etc.

I imagine Coach Huff may have some similar type of approach on his recruiting this winter/spring.

  • I think Coach Huff has shown his ability to recruit players.

Not sure we can confidently say that until after next season.  Yes he brought in some nice portal pieces, but most every major player on our team is a Doc holdover.  QB is a mess right now and we potentially losing most of the defense and both RBs.
