  • DL we lose Barber, Burton, Cumberlander, Watts and (widely circulated) Porter.  That?s 5 that played a lot of snaps.

LB we lose Beauplan, Bell, Bobo and Gray.

DB/S we lose Bowers, Gilmore, Sam?s, Norman and Abraham (heard he was going to declare for the draft).

We have some good depth, but IMO Neal is going to have to take a big leadership position on the D next year. Porter and Cumberlander were big leaders from what I saw on the field and sidelines this year.

We need to add quality depth at all 3?levels - especially at corner where are starters played a ton with only sporadic experience built behind them. We also need to find a couple guys that can continue what Beauplan and Gray gave us.

  • Or maybe our Offense will be so potent, lethal, productive and explosive in 2023, nobody will even notice what our Defense is doing (or NOT doing) _! ! ! ;D

  • That?s about the entire D.  Where was EJ Jackson yesterday.   I like him at S.  I think 13 on D is going to be very good.  Lose the D return the O

  • Thats a lot of losses. Making it even more crucial to find a QB that can throw the ball well and help us increase point production. The defense this year was incredible. Big kudos to those guys.

Yup.  Even if our depth is good we're not going to be as dominant as this season.  We're also losing one if not both our RBs.  If we don't find a legit QB then next season could be real ugly.

  • Immanuel Bush in the portal.

Tells me the DL is fairly set. Leggs, Gibson, Coffman, Alston/Burton? If Porter is back, you can move Leggs down. Leggs has the ability to take over a game. Just needs to do it consistently. seems like he likes to take plays off if the play is going away from him.

13-Daytoine Smith came on strong end of the year in a S/CB role. Kerion Martin is back. As well as Green McKnight.

At LB it's a name some haven't heard but J'Coryan Anderson kinda got lost in the depth chart from Doc to Huff. Hoping he stays as he was in the rotation with Doc. Him and Neal immediately become your veterans. I think we will be better off than most. But the portal will be a key in this group.

  • I suspect we have four defensive staters for next year who are not yet to be a blip on the radar of even the most enthusiastic Herd fan. Transfer portal and the ability to sell a program is the new reality. That's why you need someone who is more like Huff and less like Holiday. (that's not a knock...those who know me know I am more in the Holiday demographic).

I fully understand this train of thought and it could very well be accurate but a good coach will reload and recruiting will account for this. Good coaches find a way to be good every year. His recruiting should have planned for this. If Huff is a good coach (I think he is) then next man up. Our identity might not be the same as this year but find a way to win, no excuses in year 3 to not be prepared.

  • Something makes me feel like we'll be just fine on defense next year.  We, of course, need to wait until the portal moves are mostly finished, but we have a lot of talent waiting to play; get more reps then they did this year.  The LB room looks intriguing and strong. The Dline depth was strong with second and third year players, third and fourth next year.  And the defensive backs' capabilities always seemed as good as the one's playing regularly.

I also think the Oline will be better, we don't lose much and they really jelled when we got a QB that could move, or not just stand there until too late to do anything but throw the ball away or get tackled.

No need to worry about QB either, IMHO.  We'l be good and should have no lower goal that 13 wins.  Really no excuse for anything less.

  • I see that USM has already hit the portal portal with some solid studs.  Hopefully Huff can get it done again.

We need big help.  Bush oh no!  Charlie Gray is a huge loss. O has to carry us I think

  • I wouldn?t count on the offense for one simple reason, we have had a Top 50 scoring offense only once in the last 8 years. That was last year when we were #30.  We haven?t been good at scoring since Cato walked of the field.

It's crazy how these problems cut across 3 OCs and 2 HCs. It's almost an institutional issue at this point.

Anyone know how Cramsey looked at Memphis this year? Looks like they went 6-6 but I'm sure about the offense.

Memphis, where our prior OC went, was 29th in red zone scoring offense while we were 125th, and 22nd in points per game, averaging 35.1 points versus us at 24.5 points per game, good for 92nd.  I was happy to see him go to Memphis, but perhaps he wasn't the issue really, it may be Huff, just like it was likely Doc before him.

I think the biggest problem for Cramsey was at QB. He Had Green and Wells.
