  • Surprised there in not more comments on this. This is a pretty big pickup, JJ had several offers while in the portal ranging from SBC up to UVA/VA Tech. In addition, he pretty much played in every game for WAKE as CB an area of need for the Herd.

I think it is hard to get too excited about a local kid who chose not to start at MU, then come back for a second chance opportunity. I can see that opinion; but then again, I'm like many who have throughout life had to learn that the grass isn't always greener somewhere else.  Earl Nightingale has a great story called "acres of diamonds", it's a great reminder of checking out very closely what is near us instead of being drawn away to what we think we see somewhere else.

  • i have to admit that the portal creates some excitement and sort of fills the off-season.  hope we like it by next August!

if the glass is 3/4 full perspective --> early bowls that you win can't hurt, may potentially get u a leg up on attention from players in the portal or who plan to get in the portal??

I was pretty sure Marshall only offered him a preferred walk-on and last night on WSAZ, JJ Confirmed this. Also, not really sure this is a second chance opportunity. JJ played a lot of snaps at Wake. With Gilmore gone and possibly Abraham, I think Marshall was in need more than JJ. Make no mistake he is here because this is where he always wanted to be.

I have no bad will toward the young man, but I don't see many non-graduates changing schools if they're getting all the playing time they think they can get, or deserve.  I'm glad he is here, but it wasn't his first choice; he may have chosen to go where the scholarship was. NO problem with that either. Hope he is a star here.

In his interview he said Marshall never offered him and he always wanted to play here.  So there ya go Doc.

Oddly enough, it is also reported that he was offered a preferred walk on spot, so if that is correct, he was offered. He accepted another school with a scholarship, nothing wrong with that; his choice.

Yep, it would be a no brainer for the young man to take a full ride over paying his on way for college. Plus Wake is an outstanding academic school. Offering a PFO is not the same as being offered a full ride since you basically trying out for the team and you are responsible for your tuition and room and board. That is a lot of money to risk on the chance of making the team, so a PFO is taking a big financial risk. I don't think PFO is really an offer, just a way to do a tryout for the team. It is a win win for the coach, but not for the player.

  • Speaking of transfers, it works both ways.  Mookie Collier from Bluefield started out at MU and ended up transferring to North Carolina Central who defeated Jackson State in a recent bowl game. Nice video of stiff arm on one of his runs.

  • I cannot believe we had a kid in our backyard, that was good enough to receive Power 5 offers, and wanted to be here, and we did not offer him.  I don't want to turn this into a Doc bashing, but that is so bad.

The "Celebration Bowl" is so iconic to the HBCUs that they forego the 1-AA (FCS) championships to have a chance to play in that game.  Good on Mookie - his talent was never an issue, but he is really small for D-1.

I mean I guess I can see the importance but there are only about 20 or so HBCUs in FCS football and most of them didn't make much noise in the playoffs before they went to the Celebration bowl as the SWAC and MEAC are not among the better FCS leagues. There are a few exceptions like when Steve McNair's Alcorn Team was seeded very high before losing to Youngstown one year. 50k is certainly an awesome crowd and the game seems to draw a lot of overall interest.

Government is the most dangerous institution known to man. Throughout history it has violated the rights of men more than any individual or group of individuals could do: it has killed people, enslaved them, sent them to forced labor and concentration camps, and regularly robbed and pillaged them of the fruits of their expended labor. ~ JOHN HOSPERS

  • I seem to remember Jackson State coming to Htown to play Marshall in the 1-AA playoffs one year.

I don't know this, but I'm assuming the SAC and MEAC teams that don't qualify for the Celebration Bowl get to enter the playoffs?  I recall we hosted Howard one year (some enterprising young businessmen from D.C. sold sweatshirts outside The Joan that proclaimed the game of "THE BISON vs. THE HERDS"... to this day I regret not buying one).
