  • This kind of stuff will always be odd to me; whether into us or out to others, same conference transfers make little or no sense to me.  But hey, I'm old as dirt now.

Transferring doesn't always have to be for more playing time or better competition. Sometimes a player wants to be closer to home, a significant other, or friends. Maybe a player doesn't enjoy the Marshall culture and wants something that fits better. Maybe they don't see sports as a career and just want a different education.

That can be true. But I'll guess 90%+ is just because it has become the cool thing to do. It's became insane. When there is over a thousand kids in the transfer portal in 1-2 days, then that is nuts. Hopefully in time these kids will realize not to make knee jerk reactions. I really think most are just intrigued "who wants me who wants me."

Most of those kids have way too high an opinion of themselves. The portal is a good way to get humbled.

  • So many kids in the transfer portal are gonna be left without a new home and a free degree. It's unfortunate
Why did J.J. Roberts leave Wake Forest after playing 3 seasons there to come to Marshall? He wasn't that far from graduation. Well, I guess some student athletes don't come to college to study.

Well no, of course. Most of them think they are going pro. In reality, for 98% of them, that degree means more than they know.

  • SBC could stop in conference transfers

I suggested that on the SBC board a good while ago and they all balked at it.  Said they'd rather keep the talent in the SBC.  I don't like the idea of having people that know your playbook now playing against you for the remainder of their eligibility.  It doesn't happen often enough for "keeping the talent" in the conference to seem like a thing.  but even one gives that team an advantage over a conference mate in terms of knowledge of the team and their playbook.

And it would be legal if the conference adopted it as a bylaw.  If someone enters the portal the other teams just don't accept them into their school.  Nothing illegal about that.  Especially with NIL, you don't want conference mates outbidding you for your players.  It's dirty pool.

  • Allow NIL but make players sit out a year with the exception the head coach who recruited you left your school.

This would at least put some reasonableness to what is happening.
