  • Not sure how our season would have ended had we not lost our O-Line coach after the ND victory.  I have not heard much about Coach Morrissey until I saw the clinic he is running on Saturday in Atlanta. (hope the link works).

  • i never heard-
did anybody know the reason he left, and at such an odd time?

i always assumed that if a potential OL recruit has good feet and strength, maybe some smarts to absorb the sets/playbook, that most of the rest (techniques) can be taught.  i'm sure somebody will enlighten me as to how a particular OL coach can make a huge difference

  • The rumor was that Huff wasn't happy with the OL and pushed him to the point where he told Huff to S his D and either quit or was forced to resign.

There were also stories about him getting into a public fight with Doug Chapman shortly after that. Don't know all the details, but there was way too much smoke about that for there not to be a fire.

  • I wonder if Huff will pursue another OL coach or let Bill Legg continue to handle it.

You think they need more coaching than they can get reading some of the posters here on this board?

I'm pretty sure some of our posters think that would be enough.

I personally hope they hire a new OL coach AND find someone to replace Legg.  Just not a fan of his at all.

  • Last 1/4 of the season running lanes got smaller. Fanchers ability to escape and his maturity to throw it away saved sacks.

  • Coach Huff was proven right regarding the weakness of the offensive line.  I don't share the thoughts of some others here that coach Morrissey was great offensive line coach whose departure ruined an otherwise good offensive line in the span of 6 days.

  • I have zero coaching experience at the college level but did coach 30+ years in public schools albeit wrestling instead of football. In the case of Bill Legg it may not be his knowledge, blocking schemes or even his ability to teach it ? it could be that the players just do not put out maximum effort for him in practice or games. I had a coaching rival who knew almost zero about our sport when he started but his kids would run through a wall for him. They were not the most talented or the best coached in technique but they were tough to beat because they had a competitive fire and never gave up. It takes a special coach to ignite that fire and it could be Bull Legg does not light that fire as much as Morrisey did.

  • The offensive line had deficiencies no matter who the coach was.  The line was massive, but lacked athleticism, so anytime we had to do a straight drop back we were in trouble.  Why do you think Huff is offering so many offensive linemen in the portal?  I think the two areas almost every Herd fan can agree on where the offense needs an upgrade is on the oline and at QB.

Lol yeah, they held up to Notre Dame in southbend but just couldn't quite do it at bowling green and coastal lmao. Line got worse and worse as time wore on.

Huff was busier looking for jobs and doing his media tour than game planning with his staff after ND, Morrissey had enough and talked to him about it to no avail, so he said enough. Coming from someone i really trust. It may not be true but it makes more sense than not. Our talent didn't fall off a cliff, our coaching did, imo.

When Huff bounces our next hire should be a proven head coach who is known for high scoring O in FCS

  • It appears TX State has taken that approach as well:  https://txst.com/news/2022/12/2/kinne-named-new-head-coach-of-texas-state-football.aspx

I hope they git gud in a hurry.  If TX St and ULM can just win 2 more per year, each, we're in business.  And stAte, too.

I agree so long as none of those wins come against Marshall.  It may be a few years out considering that most FBS schedules are made years in advance but I think the opportunity to pick up some wins will be there for the weaker Sun Belt teams if they are able to pick up a few games against the new FBS schools.  Fans may not like it but they would like ending the season above .500 vs FBS competition.

My biggest concern is that with all of the schools that have recently moved to FBS the player talent pool is getting smaller which means recruiting is getting more competitive.  The transfer portal may help some to bring in more talent, but that assumes we are able to keep our players out of the portal.

  • Let's be brutally honest here and I won't name names.  We had 1 OL who was like a giant mannequin.  Gave up more sacks, hurries and had more holding penalties than probably the rest of the OL combined.  What worries me is not his inadequacies but that he was our only option.  The OL depth must be like a baby pool.......shallow and full of pee and 💩.
