  • I wouldn't count on Utah State being highly regarded (#28 last year) this year. They lost their coach to VCU and their All MWC  first team guard has transferred to Creighton.  USU has three more players in the portal and four other players have used up their eligibility if you read the below link. That means they will lose about 8 players from the current team.

We?ve got to fill pretty much an entire roster? ? Danny Sprinkle faces a big challenge year one at USU

If this tourney doesn't get a higher profile team to play, we might as well stay at home. I wonder what the financials are to play in the Canary Islands? Will MU receive enough money to cover expenses or is this one of those "pay for play" deals?

Never know.  Their new coach may be a legit dude with quality college experience and a real go-getter on the recruiting trail and NOT an aging career High School coach!

  • Oh I agree. But this tournament isn't turning out like we thought. WF is the only name in it at this point. It's better for us that it's getting watered down because we aren't going to have much next year unless a couple ballers fall in our lap. Andrew and Curfman will have to fire away next year and hope for the best.

I bet Andy puts up 25-30 shots a game this fall

He put up 27 in the loss to ODU. I don't see much team ball next year. It will be one of those pad your stats type years I'm afraid.

  • Well, as to the tournament field, however it ends up, ANY HERD win over a D1 foe will count a "little more" when it comes to our NET and other rankings, given that the venue is a "neutral" site for the teams.  Beats 2 or 3 sisters of the poor "yawners" at the CAM any day, IMO!

Thank goodness the tournament is in the Cayman Islands and not the Canary Islands. It is far cheaper to fly to a Caribbean Island than one on the middle of the Pacific Ocean

The Canary Islands are off the coast of Morocco

So what are the financials on the trip? How much money does MU receive from the tournament or is it a "pay to play" deal like the cbi or cit?

  • Interesting tournament. Of the name schools, Utah State lost their coach to VCU and their All MWC  first team guard has transferred to Creighton.  USU has three more players in the portal and four other players have used up their eligibility if you read the below link. That means they will lose about 8 players from the current team.  Ole Miss has a new coach and is experiencing a lot of turnover in the portal from a team that was next to last in the SEC.
    https://www.on3.com/college/ole-miss-rebels/transfer-portal/wire/basketball/2023/

Wake was 19-14 and 10-10 in the ACC and has three players in the portal and they have picked up one players from Central Michigan.

  • Good to see Ole Miss back on and Loyola Marymount went 19-12 last year.

Should be a good tournament and tune up for the guys.

  • Be nice to play, and DEFEAT, some schools who aren't exactly "unknowns" from other areas of the country.  Would certainly help the Herd's reputation in basketball and boost the school overall in terms of name, exposure, etc.

  • Ole Miss and Wake Forest have withdrawn from the tournament and have been removed from the feature teams on the site.

  • Hope this doesn't sour us on these tourneys in the future. Some of those schools are very quality mid-majors and still way better than playing SWAC/MEAC schools in the Cam.

  • Time for our AD to "man up" and sign a $$$$ game, or maybe two, on the road for the best guarantee he can get, whether Danny likes it or not!  I'm sure we'll still have enough "who dat" gimmes at the CAM for our overall W-L purposes.

Apparently we have a money game set up for next season.

Let's see who this tournament replaces the two openings with before calling it a waste (not directed at you coal).

Hope you are right, 08, about the "money game".  Just saying that if the off-shore tourney doesn't round up any satisfactory teams "of note" to replace the two "Major" departures, instead of trying to line up another home game with a UPike, Rio Grande, etc., I'd rather see Spears go after another Road money game for SOS purposes overall!

  • I would like to know the financials for the Cayman Islands Classic? Will MU receive money for participating in it or is it a "pay for play" deal? If it is a "pay for play" deal then we should not be paying a lot of money to be playing in this "Classic" when the other schools are mid majors to low majors. Dan had better be asking for a refund if there are no P5 teams playing. JMO
