  • I hear the excuses from some that claim it?s hard to recruit great players to Marshall whether it?s location, money or NIL.  Let me tell you that if a coach is competitive then he will get guys in here to win!

I don?t know any coach whether it?s pee wee or pros who doesn?t want to win!  You bring in a guy like Ben Howlett and we?d see a change on day one.  It?s now a business and he would send the weight packing.

Nobody ever improves in our program with the exception of Peneva.  A coach like Howlett takes pride in being a winner and he would hit the lower level and immediately improve our loved basketball program.  I?m still very upset over the decision to obtain Dan.  Why wait 3 more years other than pad a pension plan.  Dan doesn?t suffer but the fans who support this decision do and will.

I truly believe that anyone other than Dan could bring in enough low division guys to win the Sunbelt.  What?s Dan do?  Keeps the deadweight and then goes out and recruits who don?t even start for mid majors and can?t even average 2pts per game.

    Rant over!

  • I would love to see us hire Ben Howlett. I think our fans would love his style of play. He gets better guards in D2 than DD gets in D1. No doubt he would be successful here.

So Browning, Elmore, Burks and Kinsey didn't improve?

Even if we give into your above assumption, that would mean approximately only 10% of the guys Dan has coached in his 10 years improved.  That is terrible.

  • As I have said many times, I like Dan, what he has done for our school, and the legacy he has created. A true and loyal son of Marshall. That said, even loyal sons have to put ego aside and realize it's time to hand the reigns to another coach for the good of the program and school that they supposedly love. I hope he realizes that time is coming quickly and does the right thing; rather than have Spears and Smith dismiss him and create a messy situation between Marshall and one of the great families in Marshall history.

Do I think he can elevate the program? To be honest I am not sure anymore. We'll have to play better schedules to see.

Do I think the program can sink further under his watch? Sadly, yes.

I will pull for the program and support it as I can. I just don't have much confidence any longer. jmho.

Exactly the way I feel. It's been 9 years and no regular season titles and one tournament win. Recruiting has been a huge issue for him imo. If this is his last 3 years I would like to see him be successful and then move on. But him and the staff are going to have to get much more active in the portal and start landing some difference makers to do that. I still don't know why a portal guard isn't top priority right now that has 2-3 years left. Because if Nutter isn't the real deal and I highly doubt it, then next year at this time, it will be a must to find a dynamic PG that doesn't even know the system.

It's called opinions. If you don't like it then don't read it. The dead horse is seeing the exact same thing every season without change. Or maybe you could just call it hard headed!!!

I will be shocked if Nutter ever plays let alone stars at Marshall

Would love to be wrong on this

  • Best case is the new women's coach wins big with the girls' team.  That will probably get the decision makers looking at other coaches in the state running great programs.

I get why we?re giving DD the extension because of his name, donors and pension.  Instead of giving the title (Head Coach) he could?ve been named (Team Bus Operator) and all would be fine.

  • Just to respond to an earlier post.  If we were to go after another HC who is, or has been, the Head Man at a very successful in state D-II program, wouldn't if make more sense to go after Coach Cructchfield, a former HC at West Liberty, than to go after the current coach of the Hilltoppers?  After all, Cructchfield has moved on to another school and is having similar or greater success there than he had at West Lib.  His team this season, IIRC, defeated West Liberty in the D-II postseason tournament.

Crutchfield wouldn?t take the job at this point. Him and his wife always had plans to move that area when they retired. They already had a home near his current school before taking the job.

If he leaves it will be for one of the D1 schools in Florida, at least that?s how I see things.
