  • Not surprised, and I could see at least one more QB doing the same thing.

  • Figured we would have a few in the portal after the spring game and everyone sees where they are on the depth chart.  Hopefully we will pick up a few good ones as well.  Best of luck to Cade.

I know we all want better QB play. I just hold out hope that like Cato, Fancher will make a big leap from year 1 to 2. And that Trickett is a year wiser, and calls plays that suit his strengths and doesn't call for him to be Tom Brady.

Classy move by Trickett! I would guess that Cade was either second or third team in the QB pecking order. Obviously with the portal, a player has options. Good luck to the young man.

I think he was still a walk-on.  He came here as a walk-on and I haven't read where he was ever placed on scholly.

If Huff didn't offer him a scholarship that may have been what motivated his decision to transfer more than his position on the roster.  He had a good performance in the Spring Game relative to the other QBs on the field.

Fancher would have to leap the widest part of the grand canyon to make us even average on offense. Ifnone of these young freshman don't do it, we're screwed before the season begins.

Yea football sucks and basketball is killing it. At least Huff gets portals from big name schools like Laborn.

I really hope, and think, you're going to be VERY surprised with Fancher while he is leading MU's offense over the next three years (if we can keep him that long).  QBs go with the offense, we have a couple in the stable who don't fit the offense, one just left. Others probably will as well.

  • I think some of you are being ridiculous when it comes to Fancher. He is MUCH better than he?s getting credit for. He was a FRESHMAN.

How does he progress is to be determined, but I think he has all the necessary tools to be a great one for us.

  • A lot of the issues fall on Trickett as well. Has to call plays that put Fancher in a position to be successful

he was a freshman that was inserted to start mid-year as well.  To begin the season, he came in for some limited QB run plays.  So he didn't have a full year.  Bowl game he had back spasms.

Certainly, his game needs to improve, but for a freshman given the job mid-year, he did seem to have a good demeanor for a QB and seemed to be in control.  I expect a big step up, especially since the staff isn't working towards adding another portal QB.

I agree with this. First we know he has the wheels. For a QB he is freaky fast. Second, why are people thinking he was going to be Tom Brady throwing the ball his freshman year? Look at every single great QB we had and think about their freshman year? They all had rough spots. Payton didn't look great. Pennington had really rough games. Leftwich was awful starting out as a sophomore. And Fancher didn't even start until almost middle of the year. The game will slow down a lot this year and last year will be huge for him. Give the kid a chance like the others got before deciding.

  • Let's look at Marshall's last great QB, Rakeem Cato.  He had an okay freshman year, but I believe he did get benched at some point that season.  Then look at the leap he made in his second full season as QB.  Look at Fancher's freshman stats, their not that much different than Cato's given Fancher had almost 70 fewer pass attempts than Cato.  I'm not saying that Fancher is the next Cato, I'm only pointing out the leap a QB can make from his first to his second season.

As a freshman in 2011, Cato completed 182 of 304 passes for 2,059 yards with 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

As a sophomore in 2012, leading the nation in passing yards per game, he completed 406 of 584 passes for 4,201 yards with 37 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. With an outstanding season he won the Conference USA MVP.

    Fancher's freshman season:

    STATS
CMP   ATT   CMP%   YDS   AVG   TD   INT   LNG   RTG
    131   235   55.7         1,558   6.6   10   6   71   120.4

  • Fancher rushed for nearly 500 yards as well last season. I agree he needs to improve, but I watched him escape and move the chains last year at critical times when no one was open down field.

Can he take the next step? I sure hope so because our schedule is good enough for an access bowl berth if we can put it all together.

A huge reason for Cato's stats improving from his freshman to sophomore year was that we completely overhauled the offense before the 2012 season. I believe our coaches went out to Oregon to learn the hyper tempo, basketball on grass system that was just starting to become popular at the time. It also helped that Rippon's defense was so bad that we were always playing from behind and had to pass all the time.

I don't think many college QB's would have been successful last year with our O-line, WR's, and play calling.

That being said, Fancher's lack of accuracy even when he had time was often abysmal. If that hasn't improved, he's never going to be the guy we need.

His accuracy was far from abysmal. Getting to the point that being a starting QB at MU, with the support of your coaches (their choice) is very lowly thought of.  I'm going to give the coaches more credit than you, and trust they know what they're doing.

We also ha AJ Graham on the roster...like many quarterbacks, he looked like the answer but didn't work out
