We will go hard in the portal for 24-25. Staff already knows this. Obviously still need to sign a big to complete the roster this year.
Let's just say it. He won't go after the portal players hard this year because we don't want to offend 'quite a few' of our players on the current roster. We have had many a Dan loyalist on here state that he doesn't want to recruit "competition" because some of our better players may leave.
Quite frankly, I can't stand this current philosophy. Competition and depth makes a team better....plain and simple. What if we have a key injury next season? Who would we turn to then? Injuries do happen. You have to be prepared. That is what good programs do.......THEY RECRUIT. There is a reason that the NCAA gives 13 full rides to Division 1 programs. And the reason isn't to appease players, it isn't to let other guys be content with their fanny on the bench knowing they will get that full ride, and the reason certainly isn't to keep the head coach happy and content with this "no feathers ruffled" type of program that it has become.
We need ballers right now. Some guys that have a little toughnesses to them. Some guys that will run off the bench 6 minutes into the game and say "hey, I am going to shut this guy down that has been scoring on my teammates". Yes, defense is an integral part of the game. I hate the Huff/Dan comparisons. I really do. But I sure wish Dan would get a little bit of Huff's demeanor. Huff said the other day that he just doesn't want to get a portal player by need. He says he wants to get the best player out there......the best player available. He didn't seem to be afraid to ruffle Ali's feathers. We need that mindset in basketball. We need a different type of guard right now to what we have. Yeah, Taylor can play. Kurfman can shoot. But their defense on stopping dribble penetration is suspect to say the least. And Kurfman's offensive game is a one-trick pony until he shows me other wise.....or should I say show opposing coaches other wise. Why not recruit another guard that can defend and fill the lanes on the break? Here is a novel concept......play with 3 guards at times.
I love Dan to death. I really do. I would lay off some of the criticism of his late-game gaffes if he would change his recruiting philosophy. But I have had enough. I am sick of him catering to some of these guys. Changing up the 8 guys that sit on the bench that come to the game dressed as players would have certainly have helped for this upcoming season. But oh no, we want to recruit scared. We might offend one of our better players by bringing in a player that we need. I don't care if a guy leaves because he is afraid of competition. We need competition on this roster. Maybe if we had competition, we wouldn't look as soft as we have looked at the end of the last three seasons.
Dan has worn me out with frustration. Recruiting scared isn't the way to go. I want a bold recruiter. I want my coach developing the roster.......I don't want the "superstar" players calling the personnel shots!
