TJ McMahon. Spent the last two seasons at Rice. Starting last year. Threw for 2,102 with 18 TDs and 14 INTs. Rushed for 154 yards. He looks to have some wheels when needed. There was a long run on his highlight tape.

  • This is very telling.  At a minimum it says the guys behind Fancher are not ready which is disappointing.

  • no , it says having an experienced guy in the QB room is needed. Don't try to read to much into this right now.

  • Exactly, it's about adding depth. Our QB room is very young, RS freshmen and sophomores- with very little to none college game experience. Fancher is a sophomore with 8 games worth of starting experience.
Good pickup to help out when needed. Jmo

  • The guys have been through a full season plus Spring camp and extra bowl practices.  They should be ready.

  • Coach Huff has stated he brings in players to build depth and to push the starters. I am sure he doesn't want to put in a freshmen again at QB like he had to last year. McMahon has passed for over 2100  yards in a backup roll and his videos show he is mobile/quick. We don't have the NIL money to bring in a top ranked QB.

For whatever reasons, the staff think they need someone with experience. Reasons could be the qb transferring; the backups haven't picked up the system or are not good enough. I have followed Herd football since the 1960's and I seen a lot young QB not living up to expectations.

  • It's an offer , not a commitment. The kid may not even end up here so everyone just hold your horses.

However, I don't mind the offer. The end goal is to have the best team whether thats the 1's 2's or 3's. Like Huff stated before. They go 10 straight weeks. If this kid is an improvement of the roster I am all for it. LETS GO HUFF

And Litton, Green, Wells, and Fancher all started because of an injury or premature departure of QB1. I don't think we've had reliable QB stable since Cato. It's actually kind of remarkable how successful the team has been with just throwing freshman into the fire. I think this is where a lot of the pessimism about Fancher is coming from. They all started out relatively strong but never really developed in subsequent seasons.

And boring to watch a bad O

Take a look at attendance since Cato

Not winning titles and terrible O is a bad combo

  • Guys, we have had 1 good QB in 2 decades. You can say Litton was OK, but no titles or POY for him. Fro? He bolted so we don't know what he would have done long term. One QB in 20 years. It's not like we've been QBU lately. I hate it, but it is what it is.

We have been  a defense first program for 6-7 years now. And will look to run the ball heavily in 2023. Jmo

If we really want to be truthful.  Cato is the only solid long term QB we have had in the last ten years, but even he underachieved and blew it when it mattered.  Those 2013 and 2014 teams WERE STACKED with talent on both sides of the ball.  One conference title (in that league) during his four years and pissed away the chance at a special undefeated season (at home at that) by throwing pic after pic.

We haven't had that special QB that takes the team where it should go since Chad and Bryon.

  • I knew we would reach out for another quarterback in the portal just didn?t know who?  Not sure how I feel about this one but can?t ever have enough experience.  Maybe they feel this kid can spell Fancher if he was to go down.

I believe that is it.  This should put to rest the rumors Cole is taking the job or pushing Fancher or anything else like that.  Cole still may be the guy some day but this should tell us the rumor mill got ahead of itself based on the Scout Team award.

  • Some of you can put lipstick on a pig if you want.  The bottom line is that Huff said we weren't going to recruit a QB for 2023 and then following Spring Camp we offer one.  Not sure if it means anything for Fancher, but it does mean that the staff doesn't feel that anyone behind him can lead this team right now and that is concerning.

Also can we not do better than this dude.  2100 yards and 18/14?  That's not a good no matter who you attempt to qualify it.

When did Huff say that?  I'm concerned by whatever this offer might imply, but I don't ever recall Huff saying anything like that.

That's laughably harsh on Cato. You can say the team blew some chances, but it's ridiculous to say he "blew it when it mattered."

2011: It was an absolute miracle we made it to a bowl with the schedule we had (@ WVU, VT, @ Louisville, @10-4 Ohio, 12-2 USM, @ 12-0 Houston, @ Tulsa whose only conference loss was Houston). Don't know what else you could ask for from a true freshman.

2012: Rippon gave us one of the worst defenses in the country and Cato was the league MVP. Also, C-USA was still full strength until after this season.

2013: Continued to ball out. Lost to Ohio because the D couldn't stop Tettleton. Lost to VT because the ball slipped through Roberts' and later Allen's fingers. Lost to MTSU because the D gave up 51 and a TD on the final play. His stats were fine in the title game loss, that one was also on the defense getting run through like butter by McHargue. Epic performances against ECU to win the division and against Maryland in the bowl. Clutch drive to set up the win at FAU.

2014: Yeah he threw 4 INT's, most of them early, against WKU but also threw 7 TD's and scored 66 points, including the game-tying drive and his only drive in overtime. Hard to say he "blew" a 13-1 season, especially when he was clutch on the final drive against LT and dominant in the bowl.

We absolutely could do better and I feel that evaluating quarterbacks is not a strong area for Huff.

i will always blame that WKU loss on Doc.  If he would have kept the ball on the ground we win by at least three touchdowns.  I'll never forget what the player, on the 2014 team, posted on this board.  He stated that for the entire week the team didn't practice in an empty set and lo and behold Doc comes out empty and starts throwing it all over the place.  To this day that loss grates me more than any other loss for the exact reason you state, an undefeated season and a strong possibility of an Access Bowl bid.

  • 14 interceptions?  Might as well call Wells and tell him we've been keeping his seat warm.  Rather take a chance on a backup sophomore who may be able to see the field than another guy looking at the opponent's jerseys.

  • Huff said he intends to use a 2 QB system similar to last season.  Huff brought in 2 QBs from the transfer portal this season.  If neither transfer QB is good enough to see the field during a game or push Fancher it certainly says something about his ability to recruit or develop QBs.

I hope Huff does not fall in the same hole Doc did by failing recruit or develop a good QB.
