  • Lindy's is out and they don't favor the Herd at all.

Lindy's has us rated 6th in our Sunbelt division out of 7 teams. I was stunned by that, but they question the losses on defense, offensive line, gamebreakers at receiver and quarterback.

I have no doubt Huff can use that as motivation.

Loaded on D, great RB, strong OL and good receivers

Should be good enough to contend and with good QB play we can win the conference

    Go Herd!

  • With all the portal comings and goings, who knows?  I think we will be a lot like last year - stingy on defense, questionable on offense.

All of these magazines are obsolete now. I'm guessing everything was written before any post-spring portal moves?

  • The one I wait for is Phil Steele's Yearbook. It's the most informative and up to date.

    Valid questions.  Wrong conclusion.

Anyone remember what their prediction was for the Herd last year?

I don't agree with Lindy's. I didn't even buy it. I just quickly glanced at it at the store.

Like someone else said, I prefer Phil Steele's magazine. It is more in depth, better analysis by position and he waits a little longer to put his out so that he can see how spring practices go and rosters moves and such.

  • I agree with you.  I will be extremely disappointed if the Herd finishes 6th in the SunBelt East.

Lindy's does express some valid concerns about the OL, QB, WR, and defense.  Lindy's either put some thought into it or read the message boards because those same concerns have been expressed here mean times.

With the commitment from the ex-starter Rice QB we should at least have a QB battle and depth at the QB position starting summer camp.

WR is a big question mark.  We lost 4 of our top 7 pass catchers in the offseason including our #1 WR in a position group that struggled last season.  All of our returning WRs combine accounted for a total of only 3 TD last season.  Returning WRs accounted for 89 receptions which is only 36% of all receptions.

I guess the coaching staff's so-so recruiting, and using the portal as a quick one-year at a time fix, as well as a slash-and-burn method to build a one year or bust championship season, isn't exactly impressing the sports press writers who cover the Sun Belt beat. Also, not impressed are the Vegas bookmakers who have listed the Herd as a fifth choice +900 pick to win the Sun Belt Championship outright. And a third choice to boot behind East rivals James Madison and Coastal Carolina. I listed the Sun Belt Championship odds earlier tonight in a separate thread.

With Fancher at quarterback? He's only useful at picking off crippled teams as is his mentor Gnarls. They really went after NC Central, FIU, right for their jugular!

I guess would be happy with a coach that lost to Akron 65-38 in Huntington?

Have you ever tried to wager using Phil Steele's Gold Sheet or whatever it is called? A person is probably better off playing against the picks touted in it.

I'm darn more happy about the retired John "Doc" Holliday and his career accomplishments here than his replacement, an intoxicated with ambition poser who needs to be pushed down the James River in a canoe to Chimborazo Park to commune with the person that hired him.

JFC so it's personal eh man?

Let me make myself clear pal: I love Marshall

F Doc Holliday (No Nuts Punts A lot)

F Hamrick (Killer of the football program)

Huff isn't high on my list but he doesn't get the "F" yet lol

  • Well anyone that has payed attention has to give Huff & the football staff a high grade on restocking the defense.  They brought in a few players that could be promising on the offensive line, and the Rice QB.  If we stay healthy on the offensive line we should have a good running game.  Can Ali stay healthy?  The big questions mark has got to be at QB, and receiver play.  With the lack of access to spring practice and lack of good media coverage we really won't know about big improvements until we get into the season.  My guess is 6-7 wins.  If we get above average QB play we could move up into the 8 win slot.  It would be really surprising to me if we crack the 8 win mark with this 2023 schedule.  We need some major growth at QB and receiver spots if we have any chance of getting more than 8 wins.  Looking forward to football season.  Maybe Huff adds a few more players come fall?  I think we have a full roster, but funnier things have happened.  Lots of questions to be answered.

I said 6-6 here last week, with a 2nd or 3rd place divisional finish. The sportsbooks over/under on team regular season wins is seven (7). The sportsbooks were not as high on East Carolina, Virginia Tech, Georgia State, and Appalachian State as I had thought. But they were a little higher on South Alabama and Georgia Southern than my reasoning. I don't like the quarterback, wide receiver, and offensive line situations, though it seems the defense seems to be solid. Offensive skill position players may be harder to recruit. They did bleed 30 players off of the roster and/or scout teams out of the program in the period from January 1st until the end of spring practice. To my understanding, none of these departures were related to eligibility depletion. Huff runs things in secrecy, I wonder what that and the constant changing in color branding does to fan interest.

What was Docs signature win? Huffs been here 2 seasons and already picked off ND.  Sounds like somebody had inside access under Doc but not Huff.

I think his signature losses outnumber his signature wins. That is what happens when you hire a coach that recruits players of questionable character.
