  • If you look at how our team is being constructed, it's easy to see our strengths and how we are going to win.

    1.  We are going to play tough attacking defense with substitutions and depth
    2.  We are going to run the ball
    3.  We are going to throw to the tight end
    4.  Our QB is going to run the ball and throw short passes
    5.  We are going to have a strong kicking game

We are going to start out with a 50/50 run pass and eventually it will revert to only passing on 3rd and long.

These are great things to have on a football team, the only thing is we may not be a good passing team because we won't have to be a good passing team.  It honestly doesn't matter much who we put at QB they just need to be clutch on 3rd down and not throw interceptions.

    Any thoughts?

  • I agree that we will be built to win with a stout defense and solid running game. I'm not sure about the only passing on 3rd downs. I think they will try to balance the offense as much as they can. The difference is both Fancher and McMahon have the ability to run when the pocket breaks down, so we may not shy away from trying to throw the ball around some. Our OL should be solid and you already know what you are getting with Ali in the backfield. AJ Turner and Maurice Jones were impressive in the spring game as well.

Imo, I think we contend for a SBC title this year. I'm not buying Coastal Carolina as a contender until their new coach proves it, App State is trending down and will probably hang onto Shawn Clark to long, and JMU is not eligible to play for the title. The competition from the West is a little different. I think Southern Miss, South Alabama, and obviously Troy will be tough.

Why aren't they?  I thought the inability to play for titles when moving up in division was for one year.  If I was right, they've served their time in purgatory and should be eligible for titles and playoffs next year.

NCAA by-laws require 2 years 'probation' now.  I think it was to discourage schools from trying to model themselves on Marshall and make the jump - even though most aren't ready (see, for instance, Kennesaw St.) James Madison was more than ready, but the NCAA was tired of its former administration enforcing its by-laws in a willy-nilly fashion, so it strictly enforced this one to the detriment of the Monarchs.

JMU is ineligible for a football conf championship, but could still play in a bowl if there aren't enough 6-6 or better teams available to fill all the slots.  Long shot, but its there.

Their waiver for a one year transition period was denied earlier this year.

2 season's under Huff now and the one thing we have learned is that he wants a run based offense.  The passing game is what has changed offensively.  I'm not sure whether Huff wants a short quick passing attack or if last season's attempt at a passing game was personnel driven.

With the emphasis Huff is putting on recruiting defense, the coaching staff on offense certainly have their work cut out for them.  Every recruit on offense has to live up to his potential, not much room for mistakes or early departures.  Unless some of the returning WR or transfer WRs step up our WR group may be only slightly better than last season.

WE ALL want a football championship or multiple football championships.

    Defense wins championships.
I think the special teams unit will be deadly; kick blocking and potentially kick returns.
Offense should play smart, controlled football and eliminate turnovers.

I like Huff's recipe and what he is cookin'

Well, to their credit, after being in FCS football for a long time, they nevertheless came into the SBC from the CAA and had their total athletic programs MORE than able to compete across the board , finishing close to the top of the SBC in the success of ALL their sports teams in the 2022-23 season!!  A strong addition to the SBC, IMO, and a close geographic rival for MU.  Plus they can give MU fans someone to "Hate" like schools in the past, like Furman, UTC, WKU, etc., etc.!

If we're building a team to win a championship, you have to be tough on the road.  Playing and winning on the road in a hostile environment against a very good team is the hardest thing to do at the college level. Home field advantage is real and it's the reason all the big boys stack the deck with home games (of course money is also a huge driver to book home games as well).

Anyway the way to win on the road is play defense and running the ball.  Defense and rushing travel very well.

They are reliable and it's about preparation, attitude and execution.  If you show up with a well prepared defense and an offense that knows how to execute the run game and the offense as a unit has the attitude that they are going to run the ball and no one is going to stop them.  Then at that point it's assignment football and it's about beating the man in front of you went the ball snaps and beating down their defense.  Running the ball kills home field momentum and stabilizes the game.

There's really nothing better to crush a home team's spirit that to go right down the field in a long drive and get in red zone and just run the ball between the tackles and bust their defense and score from the 5 yard line.  It's just screams we're tougher than you.

So yeah it's not the air raid passing attack but it's the best formula to win.
