  • Looking at the schedule my range is 9-3 at best and 6-6 at worst.  I love how Huff and staff just continue to recruit and hopefully all of the new guys mesh as a team.

We have a schedule in front of us this year that provides an opportunity for national recognition if we can navigate the first half and beat 2 P5s.

  • if we go 6-6, i'm not sure "love" is the word i'd use to describe much of anything after 3 yrs of huff.

beating VT is an expectation, not a surprise or a wish.  if we can't beat a team AT HOME that only won 1 game in the ACC last yr, then we definitely aren't where i expect us to be.

ECU was a .500 AAC team last yr, & only went 4-3 at home.  that needs to be a win.

if we lose to NC St -- & i expect it to be competitive, we should go 3-1 OOC.

Normally I would agree with your thinking, but with the portal, who know how good these teams will be next season?  With the right additions a team can be turned around quickly.  With the wrong subtractions, a team can go from good to bad quickly.  The whole thing is just upside down.

  • One thing I would add, I think the level of football in the SBC is much higher that the level of football we experienced in CUSA. Kinda like the Snyder vs Doc schedule arguments. I think the days of running through the conference are like we did in the old days are gone. The SBC members seem to be committed to football, not much so in basketball.

We certainly are playing a challenging schedule this year compared to most years. I do think we are in better situation with Huff vs Doc. The one thing I do like about Huff is that has embraced the portal and seems to be working it well.  We need to keep injuries at a minimum and not make mistakes to be successful.

Good points. 2023 is the toughest schedule we've had in years. CUSA was ranked as the worst D1 league several years while we were there. Doc averaged 7 wins a season during his tenure.
Huff did a great job of keeping team together last year and finishing strong. Something we didn't do well during Docs tenure. Jmo

  • I just want to be able to pass the ball when the defense loads the box.  I want a QB that is accurate, completes 3rd down often and rarely throws picks.  Fancher only throws the ball to 3 guys and 2 are gone.

I cannot deal with another Marshall team that cannot score.  Watching us be down by a 10 points and have 12 offensive possessions and not score once And lose by 10 is torture.

Fancher and this WR group better have it figured out.

  • You also can't go by just record and compare to past years z CUSA was a joke after the teams left for the AAC. How we didn't win the east more is insane. ODU and Charlotte were start up football programs. FIU was awful and FAU was bad part of the time. And mTSU was average at best. WKU had some solid years. SB is much much stronger in football top to bottom and it's not close. Now basketball has the weak conference in the SB and there are no excuses.

  • I don't care about the record as much as I care about us being in the title hunt. If we aren't playing for a chance to be in the championship game the last week of the season then I'll be disappointed.

  • I say 5-7 overall, with 4-4 in the conference. Could easily slip to 4-8 overall, 3-5 in conference. Maybe Charles Huff has some wild cards in his hand. This message board gets spammed with so many (just looking, potential, possible, signed, in Huntington in camp), type of prospects, it's really hard to ascertain what is Athletic Department paid A.I. generated propaganda posted here, and what is reality. Key game(s) are at home vs. James Madison and the 3 out of 4 conference road games commencing in mid-October and ending in early November.

  • VT will be tough but all home games are winnable. This is 5 or 6 wins.

I think ECU could go either way and I'm counting NC State as a loss.

As far as road conference games I think the obvious challenges will be Appy and South Alabama.

I'll leave one game open for one of the wtf games like BGSU.

9 wins but I think there is a pathway to 10 wins.

  • Thing that concerns me is 4 out of 5 games in middle of the schedule are on the road with those including Coastal, App and NC State.  That is a tough stretch for any mid major with no byes.

We win all our OOC games and have a very good conference run, meaning no WTF flub ups, and the HERD could very well be in serious running for a New Year's Six appearance, IMO!!

    Good outlook.

If the defense maintains and the offense improves then we have a good chance at winning the conference assuming another teams doesn't catch lightning in a bottle.

  • ECU lost more than I thought. If we play steady there and no TO's we win. Tech, its a tossup. We beat last years Tech team, we'll see what they have done to turn things around. NC State loss. Possible losses to Coastal, App and USA. If there is one team I want to pound in the ground and shut up - its JMU.

Offense plays well, Ali and OL we stay healthy and the defense gels quick and plays well - I can see a 10-2 or 9-3 year. If we don't improve on offense 8-4 or 7-5.

Going to optimistic route with a 9-3 regular season and bowl win to finish 10-3.
