  • They reported that Apple is trying to move into college sports and are negotiating with the PAC 12 for rights.

Wonder if this is a sign of greater opportunity in sports broadcasting, or a sign of desperation on the part of a sinking PAC 12 conference.

I think the disastrous C-USA experiment in broadcasting with anyone other than ESPN was missed by the "brains" on the west coast.

    Couple of points:
Apple+ is somewhat more visible than the FB disaster was for C-Judy. BUT, it's still appointment TV only and not likely to be shown randomly in sports bars or be in the radar for someone just wanting to watch the game.

Next, the current & previous commissioners largely had their hands tied by the leaderships of the PAC-12 members regarding media rights. Similar thing happened, in fairness, to Judy.

  • So it's pretty clear there's going to only be a PAC-4 within the next week or so.

That PAC name is too valuable to dissolve the conference so my guess is they take the most valuable half of the MWC (Boise, Fresno, SDSU, Colo St, UNLV, Utah St) to get to 10.

That would be really good news for us because it ends up weakening the MWC and basically eliminates our biggest competitor outside the AAC for that yearly playoff berth. And the zombie-PAC wont be guaranteed a berth so it's not crazy to think that 2 current G5 teams could get autobids to the 2024 or 2025 playoff.

Of course, the PAC could also go further east and pluck the private AAC schools like SMU, Tulane, Rice, and I guess maybe Tulsa. This is the scenario most likely to directly affect us since the AAC could come looking to some SBC schools seeing if they want to defect.

But even that probably only results in us losing a Georgia State, ODU, or Texas State. The dream scenario of course is that ECU gets fed up with the AAC and joins us. Taking WKU to replace one of those schools would be fine too.

Either way it probably gets even worse for C-USA. If there's only half a MWC left, they're immediately taking UTEP, NMSU, and maybe La Tech to refill their numbers. C-USA will be forced back to their options of Tarleton State or calling up even more FCS schools.

So glad we got out of that mess, and I think we're in a pretty good spot to benefit from most of the outcomes of this latest wave.

  • So where does that leave college football?  P5/G5? P4/G6?

I can't imagine Cal, Stanford, Oregon St, & Wash St--even if you throw Boise & SDSU in there--having enough pull to keep the PAC at "power" conference status.

Wasn't all that long ago there were six "power" conferences, then "they" realigned and there were five with the former Big East, now the AAC, constantly whining they were still a power conference with no one paying attention. My guess is the PAC-? will be the next downgraded conference, if it survives at all.

  • If I were the ACC, I'd prefer several AAC schools over Cal & Stanford! They bring nothing to the ACC.

Those two adds are not going to close the money gap between BIG and SEC to the ACC. There is a 30+ million difference per school to what ACC schools get to BIG/SEC in their media deals.

Heck, the ACC is 15+ million per school below the BIG 12 right now with their media deal.

Only thing that would seem to be plausible is if this also includes Notre Dame becoming a football member as well.

What an act of desperation. I'm sure the whole San Fran bay area can hardy wait for that Cal v Wake Forest match-up. Gotta show the SEC and Big 10 that the ACC is still relevant, lol. If this happens they need to change the name of the conference to the A&PCC (Atlantic and Pacific Coast Conference.)

Except both are world-class academic institutions, undergrad, grad & as research facilities.

As far as FB goes Stanford has had good teams in the not too distant past. Athletically, Stanford is widely regarded overall in both men's and women's sports. There's nobody in the AAC that comes close to adding the cache that Stanford would bring.

I do doubt either will be in the ACC.

    Yep,
And in the case of Stanford, that's potentially a problem for the US Olympic teams.

Stanford, however, has very deep pockets, so we'll see.
