  • I heard an interview of Coach Huff where I earned some respect he said, (paraphrasing)

"I have heard mentioned that some people think Marshall needs to raise my contract, don't worry about me, we (his family) have all we need.

There are much more important things that need funding around here, mainly a training table so that athletes can eat and we can recruit against schools that have such facilities, if you have money to give, please support our athletes don't worry about me."

That's good stuff.  I missed or have forgotten that interview with Huff.  That's the type of attitude I like to see, the type of guy I want to be successful, and the type I want to coach Marshall to success.

I would like to hear or read that interview if you know where I can find it.  That deserves respect.

  • I have no thoughts on this cause it doesn?t really matter

It may not matter to you but when I open my checkbook to write a check to Marshall, the Big Green, and the QB Club the decisions that are being made with how to spend the money matters to me.

  • Coach Huff is in the 3rd year of a 4 year contract.  The 4th year will start in January 2024.  Huff's base salary is $755,500.  He receives another $405,500 for tv/radio appearances and fundraising appearances.   There also built in incentives for such things as winning season, attendance, ticket sales, bowl appearance, conference championship, and etc.

This year Marshall and Huff will start the renegotiation process.  If Huff wins a conference championship then Marshall will try to tie him to a longer term, more money, and a bigger buyout.  Huff's agent will shop around and test the waters.

My question is where are we if Huff doesn't win a championship?  Where are we if we are 7 wins or less?  Does Marshall extend the contract with a pay raise?

I think Huff will be offered a contract extension this season irregardless of the outcome.  It will just be a matter of how long, how much, and the buyout.

    Thoughts?

Actually Huffs base salary is $350k, he gets the 405k additional guaranteed for radio tv appearances, coaches show, and big green appearances. He then has other incentives that pay $30k for winning season, $50k for conference title, $75k if he makes access bowl, $50k for any bowl game appearance, then $100k tied to attendance and ticket sales (50k for each).

Also a couple cars and ancillary benefits. A million dollars a year ain't bad. Just 1.4 million for assistants i believe though. Would be really nice to have 1.5 million for our HC, and 2 mil for assistants. Could attract some much better coaches at that level

  • I like Coach Huff.  I like his personality.  I like his moxie.  The landscape of college football has changed so much with the portal and NIL, I don't know how you can really evaluate a head coach anymore.  He has 40 new players coming in this season.  That's a lot of moving parts.  It might take a few seasons to find the sweet spot for the number of players to take in the portal from season to season.  What if Fancher explodes this season?  Will we lose him to a P5 program offering him $$$$ NIL money?  What about Ali.  What if he comes back and puts up huge numbers like he did pre-injury?  Will we lose him to the portal?  I would not want to be in Spears shoes right now trying to figure out if Huff is worthy of an extension.

the effort is certainly there, but need to see something better than 7-5 & 8-4 moving forward.  we got rid of our last coach b/c that was his ceiling.

I hear ya, but the last coach didn't have to coach under these set of circumstances.  He didn't have to worry about Cato transferring to a P5 school for a bundle of $$$$.   You could build a program, now it's like fast food.  You get a bunch of players from the portal that can help you immediately, then the next season you do it all over again.  It's the fast nickel instead of the slow dime.

Well, in that case let's all hope that AD Spears has former AD Kayo Marcum's number on "speed dial".  As we ALL know, ole Kayo was definitely the "Master" of the "Fast Nickel" approach to being a Division 1 Athletic Director.

  • I like the fact Huff works non stop on his roster.  He also has gotten a lot more positive about Huntington.

I tried a little bit to find it, but haven't been able to yet.  I'm a 100% sure he said it.   I think this statement is buried in either a ThunderCast video about the 1837 club or a third party interview, what I mean is it's not in an official Marshall presser type video.

Can Doing it the Herd way comment if he heard this statement?

I remember Coach Huff making the comment and I am fairly sure it was near the end of one of the ThunderCast videos. I will try to find it for you.

Here is Coach Huff's comment providing support to the program. Not quite like you said, but close.  Go to the 1:18 or so spot for his exact words.  Before that he talks about leaving or being fired. He talks about his name being mentioned for jobs and the internet rumor mill.

This is the exact sentiment that I wrote about and actually this is better than my post, but this isn't the video I watched and paraphrased.  Thanks for sharing
