  • MASON COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) - West Virginia Governor Jim Justice announced Wednesday that Mason County has been selected as the site of a major development project.

Justice announced during a press conference that Fidelis New Energy selected Mason County to be the site of The Mountaineer GigaSystem, a lifecycle carbon neutral hydrogen production facility. Fidelis said the site will also be home to the Monarch Cloud Campus, which is expected to house data centers powered by net-zero hydrogen.

Justice announced the site will be constructed in four phases and employ up to 4,200 construction workers as well as creating 800 full-time jobs.

He told me that one of Warren Buffett, Bill Gates & someone elses (maybe the guy that owns Tesla??) companies were investing a lot of money in WV and in the next 10 years he says thing are really going to boom. He personally deals with many of the very wealthy in several WV counties.

New MetroNews article says it will be in Pt. Pleasant.  Not sure how much room they need, but there's quite a bit north of the city (I think)

After a week?s delay and some concern, West Virginia officials announced a new project to produce clean hydrogen from natural gas in Mason County and deposit greenhouse gas emissions beneath state-owned wildlife areas.
The state Economic Development Authority today approved up to $62.5 million in forgivable loans for Houston-based Fidelis New Energy. Gov. Jim Justice then announced the project and introduced company leaders during an event at the state Culture Center.
The Mountaineer Gigasystem and Monarch Cloud Campus is meant to be in Point Pleasant. Developers say it will result in 800 full-time jobs and work for 4,200 construction workers.

Pt Pleasant is 41 miles from MU on a two land road. Charleston is 56 miles from Point Pleasant via US 35/I 64. Route 2 needs to be upgraded to 4 lanes from Huntington to PP. Hopefully the plant is not too far north of PP.

A 4 lane rt. 2 can't be built soon enough.  Cabell and Mason counties are going to
'discuss" it in about 2 yrs I think.

  • With the huge new NUCOR plant being built along with this, Rt.2 MUST go 4 lanes..at least! It will be too dangerous the way it is.

11 pm newscast from TV-8 in Charleston indicated that location would be north of the airport in Mason County which is probably where you are talking about.

Sadly, FT2, this is another area where Huntington, Cabell County and the entire State have "missed the boat" on an idea that was presented decades ago and literally "talked to death" but never produce much, if any, concrete action and results.  The Herald-Dispatch in the late 60s, or maybe the 70s, ran an extensive series of articles on upgrading Route 2, from the top of the Northern Panhandle all the way down to the Big Sandy River.  I remember reading them, quite well done, lot of research and ideas were floated, in the series which ran about a week or thereabouts, IIRC.

Today, only thing that has resulted is that I believe from New Martinsville on up into the panhandle, Wheeling up to Chester, there has been some upgrading and even some 4 lane construction improvements on Route 2.  Not sure if much of anything has been done from Huntington up to Parkersburg, or even to Point Pleasant.  Maybe an added passing lane here or there.  But basically, the road to Pt. Pleasant is the same as it was in the 1950s, nearly 75 years ago!!

  • Airport is closing and will be part of overall plan.  This is just the tip of the iceberg for this project.  Road improvements have already started by Nucor itself.  We have the right geology for this project.  Has to have the right kind of stone underneath the surface for containment and WV has it.  Will take up appoximately 1,200 acres near the airport.

I was at the announcement in Charleston and the reception by the Fidelis.

Mason County has more on the burners all due to John Musgrave and our state government.

  • If they upgrade Rt 2 between Huntington and PP, they need to do it right.

They could make a slick 4-lane there that's very aesthetic, and with the river as the backdrop, if they cleaned up all the overgrown trees etc, it could be a huge asset to the state for scenic drives in our area.

Really need a Guyandotte bypass somehow.
I know the bridge across to Ohio connecting back to the suspension bridge will likely never happen.
But if trucks/cars are going to use that to access Huntington, Going through Guyandotte is awful.

  • They actually just built a brand new 4 lane divided highway, I believe it's RT35 that goes directly through Putnam and Mason counties.   You can access it from I64 near Scott Depot.

There are multiple areas of property that connect to that 4 lane that could be built on and the business would be 30 second from a highway.  I believe the speed limit is 65 or 70.

That highway provides easy access to Colombus OH, Indianapolis, IN and terminates In Chicago.

    https://governor.wv.gov/News/press-releases/2021/Pages/Gov.-Justice-holds-grand-opening-ceremony-for-final-section-of-U.S.-Route-35.aspx

Gov. Jim Justice today held a grand opening ceremony for the largest single-contract project in his visionary Roads to Prosperity program, cutting the ribbon on the final 14.6-mile section of four-lane U.S. Route 35.

Completion of the massive project was made possible through Gov. Justice?s $2.8 billion Roads to Prosperity highway construction and maintenance program. The program, addressing roads and bridges all over the Mountain State, is the most aggressive highway construction program in West Virginia history.

In terms of dollar-value, the $257 million U.S. Route 35 project is the largest single-contract Roads to Prosperity project in the entire program. The project was funded through a combination of state and federal dollars.

Completion of the project will now allow travelers to utilize a safe highway to accommodate increased traffic demands in the area. Motorists will be able to drive on smooth, four-lane pavement for 37 consecutive miles, beginning at the Interstate 64 exit at Scott Depot and continuing straight through to Point Pleasant and the Ohio state line, heading toward Columbus.

I remember that plan that was being pushed for Route 2 back in the day. I would bet there is a lot available FLAT land for development along the river along with the CSX railroad and Ohio River offering transportation options for industry. jonnie mentioned the upgrade of US 35 which I believe Huntington pushed for the connection from I 64 to be pushed west to the Cabell County line. My guess is that that the Charleston people fought that idea? Point Pleasant is about 50 miles from Huntington and if there it was a more direct link with a new road that distance would be shortened. The road just needs to close to the river, but cut out some of the curves on the river to lower the distance.

This finished road is great. Before it would go two lane to four lane and now it is all 4-lane. Very nice scenic drive. The speed limit fluctuates at times. To the north it connects with Rt 32 which runs East/West through Ohio and to north continues on.  It saves about 20 minutes when going from Cincy area to the WV turnpike.

Interstate from Huntington to Barboursville exit and take bypass to Rt 2, which is literally a few hundred yards from interstate.  No need to go through Huntington or Guyandotte and puts you way up Rt. 2, past all the industrial crap.
