BLACKSBURG, Va. -- ? Grant Wells threw three touchdown passes and rushed for a score to lead Virginia Tech to a 36-17 season-opening win over Old Dominion on Saturday night.

Wells, who won the starting quarterback job over Baylor transfer Kyron Drones in the preseason, completed 17 of 29 passes for 251 yards to help the Hokies avenge a 20-17 upset loss to the Monarchs in last year?s season opener.

    7. Wells. You may not like the lows. But the highs were some of the best QB play we've seen here.

What highs are you giving him so much credit for?  He was probably 2-4 in close games and absolutely went catatonic under big pressure.

    0-3 in bowl games
    0-1 in championship games

  • Bless his heart.  He had the guts to run in for a TD.  Could have used that in NOLA instead of stepping out of bounds.  Just sayin

I'd put Peterson above Hill. But after Hill, the level drops off steeply.

  • Litton is hard one for me to classify. He looked really good in 2015 but 2016 was a disaster. And in 2017 he showed a lot of potential but he was also throwing to Brady, who was good enough to make Greene look like a competent QB.

I think th WR situation has gone hand in hand with issues at QB. As much as I liked Gammage, he wasn't nearly on the level of Brady or Shu.

  • 3 turnovers in critical points for ODU.  Wells had a lot of great moments, but they also had a lot of 3 and outs from bad throws.  VT's seems to have better team speed this year.  They play Purdue next week.  That one will be worth watching.

Take the score with a grain of salt. ODU was picked for 7th or last place in the SBC East Division and they had smallest vote total in the entire SBC preseason poll with 17 votes.  Marshall had 68 votes in the poll. No surprise Tech won this game.

I loved watching Bernie Morris play.  I believe that had he been here under a good coach then he would be on this list

Yes I thought about him. I might put Bernie Morris 9th. Wasn't it him who played in the WVU debacle? He played well and almost led us to one of our all time best wins.

  • Does Wells have another year?  He's definitely a Covid athlete.  But, like I said if he doesn't win about 7 games.  Their fanbase will likely run him off and he'll either be a GA or he'll transfer again.

Go to page 87 on the document to see a breakdown of the individual QBs we've had.

Peterson threw 33 picks and 35 TD passes, but he attempted a whopping 622 passes.
I didn't go to a lot of games in the early 90s, so Todd Donnan's stats leaped out to me.  Especially his senior year in 1994 (63% completion, 33 TDs and 11 picks with just over 3,000 yds, 215 yds/game...12.6 yds/catch & 8 yds/att).

Litton was our last QB to throw for over 20 TDs in a season in 2017.  We had that from 2012 thru 2017.

We didn't have any QB from 2003 thru 2009 to throw for 20 or more in a season.  But, Hill got hurt in 2003 at Tennessee and wasn't the same when he came back.  Had he not gotten hurt, we may have beaten the Vols that year.  With Gochneaur as b/u, they combined 22 TDs thru the air.  So from 2004 thru 2009 we were 29-43.

Putting wells above litton is laughable. You may not like litton, hell nobody liked the kid personally but he could play QB. If he was here now or last year even, we push going undefeated with that defense.

Wells issue has always been, inconsistent play. Let's hope he has a great game this weekend because that would put him in line for a 120 yard 0 td 4 int day against us

Maybe he's grown out of the issue but I expect the pressure of the return game will have him collapse around half time.

I like Litton and his family, real good people.  I didn't know this but the kid is still playing pro football in Canada.  He was on 2 NFL practice squads and 3 CFL teams.  So if pro teams and scouts think he has enough talent To pay him and keep him around that's enough validation for me.
