  • Yeah I was surprised the announcers weren't even questioning whether there was any contact at all.

But at that point we'll gladly trade a red for taking away the PK so I'm glad it got reviewed.

  • After seeing the review, I believe the ref got the call correct, except possibily the location of our GK...and it was probably good for the Herd. That action was way more than likely to be a Pitt goal without the penalty.

It was really enjoyable to watch an actual professionl production with multiple cameras, replay, the entire pitch covered, the good team in the booth. The production on our FB game sucked so bad in contrast.

  • This was such a great match.  Pitt is a big difference from our first 3 opponents.  I think some of the turnovers we let happen were because our players had not been tested as much individually.  This is what we needed early in the season.

Bell was outstanding tonight -- 3 assists -- and he really made two of the goals happen.  His thru pass to Silva for the final goal was beautiful.   Smart to pull him back into the midfield in the 2nd half.  Garcia-Pascaul is a great addition to the team.  Love the depth on the team.  Last year against Pitt -- also played on a hot night -- our starting 11 were cramping up and we were barely holding on with a narrow 2-1 lead.  Tonight, we had a deep bench to reach into.  Silva, Bamford, Holmes, Adjetey all played great while giving starters a rest.  Even after the red card, the Herd's defense felt in control.  Pitt was reduced to long shot chances.

Overall, I felt it was a stronger match than last year's game against Pitt.

  • Nice win.  We had a number of chances that could have the score more lopsided, but, to be fair, so did Pitt.

For the first time this year, I thought our back line looked very vulnerable; hopefully we can clean that up.

Anyone know why Joao Souza (transfer from MU) didn't play tonight?  He's been getting extensive minutes for Pitt -- maybe he's injured?

Unless my eyes are deceiving me, the Pitt player clearly tripped on himself. Even worse ref didn't get the call right after review.

Those who know more about soccer than myself, would you agree?

I agree that this is the best executing offense we've had in recent years.  The announcers even commented that Georgetown and Penn State (previous Pitt opponents) couldn't match what the Herd brought to the offensive end.

Yes.  Last year we were a little weaker in the midfield.  And even in the Nat Championship year we didn?t have a great offense.

Two things seem to be making the difference.  Moving Bell back to midfield gives a player with speed and touch to control the middle allowing us to create the kind of moments when Bell gets in open space and can slip a thru pass between defenders where like Silva tonight then has a clean shot in the box.

This way the Herd can attack from the wings?Simon, Silva, Aoumuch?with a tall striker like Garcia-Pascaul to finish, or it can come at you right down the middle with fast forwards and midfielders.  Pitt is also a fast team, but at times our speed gave them problems.

And the second thing are the player additions this year.  Garcia-Pascaul is a big physical finisher we have not had before.  Silva and Simon are great additions.  This team still has Grassi?s possession ability and his usual defense.  But he built this team to score.

  • Backend breakout has been really bad. Making it way too easy for Pitt to box us into small spaces. We need to get the ball to the flanks and run. Self inflicted. Pitt is doing exactly what Xavier did but more effectively. You simply cannot dribble your way out of tight spaces vs 2 or 3 defenders.  Get in to Pinto and let him and MF go to flanks and let Pitt chase.

Bell and Adam drive me crazy trying to dribble through multiple defenders. We cleaned it up a bit. Good win against a great program, all the while not playing our best game.

  • Herd soccer wins player of the week award again
Marco Silva scored three times for Marshall in the win.

NEW ORLEANS ? Sophomore Marshall men?s soccer student-athlete Marco Silva was named the first Sun Belt Conference Men?s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, as announced by the league office. This is the first weekly honor of Silva?s collegiate career.

The Coopersburg, Pennsylvania, native had quite the contest against Wright State on August 28. • The greatest axiom in sports is teams that can't beat pressure will see it more and more.  It screws up your offensive gameplan and allows the opponent much easier scoring opportunity than they would have otherwise. Once you can beat defensive pressure there is nothing you should not be able to do to counter whatever strategy the defense has.  In basketball and football to an extent, that generally means scoring. That will stop the team from pressuring you over time because the risk becomes too great. In soccer, scoring is much harder due to offsides rules and nature of game but the goal, other than scoring, when being pressured is to break the pressure and get into your offense and create advantages. At worse you make them start from their own end.

Wright State pressured but we got the ball beyond them and created tons of chances. Xavier pressured pretty effectively and limited our chances to an extent but their offense could not counter and they weren't good enough to trap ball in small spaces. Pitt was able to trap us in small spaces and we made several bad decisions with ball.  UNC did this to us in NCAA College Cup. In all sports it's about moving ball to open space quickly when pressured. When we got it to flanks we were able to do that. They collapsed everything in middle until we were able to cross midfield.  GK should never have kicked ball through middle when they pressured. When in trouble kick it down sideline. In general though Perotta was good and very calm back there.

I agree Aoumaich and Bell, at times, try to dribble through too many defenders. It's more troublesome when defensive guys are doing it in your own end. It's nice to be calm but when it results in a TO it can be very costly and we were lucky Pitt didn't convert more of the TO into SOG. Bell was terrific last night finding open guys. 3 assists.

JMU tied at Gardner Webb. Both undefeated coming in. GW has a new coach and has them playing very well. The match could have gone either way.  JMU has a good bit of punk in them. Very chippy game and I counted 3-4 times JMU used flopping tactics to try and get calls in box. This made it very hard on refs. At one point a red card was issued to GW and after video review it was taken away. In another instance a JMU flopped close to goaline on corner. After video review they said there wasn't any foul at all. Same on a pass into box. Late in game ref started to ignore them. They did alot of baiting and GW took the bait multiple times and finished with only 9 players. One was a legit red card but the JMU guy still flopped to make it seem much worse. It was obvious from his delayed reaction. MU needs to be careful at JMU 10 days from now. They are talented enough as it is but they will do things to get calls and get you off game. UCF and ranked FIU also tied. UK got shell shocked by Louisville. Final was 4-2 but it didn't seem that close. Louisville had a whopping 26 shots. WVU won a close match vs a not so good American squad. Me thinks they were looking forward to match up with top 5 Portland at home. SB in my opinion right now: Marshall, JMU, UCF, WVU, UK

The call on Amaro was silly imo. Pitt players heal made slight contact with Amaro's leg and that forced Pitt player to trip on his own legs. Amaro may have moved slightly inside toward player to cause it so it is a foul and even a yellow ok since he had a path to goal.  No way does it meet the definition of a red in my opinion. It worked out the way it should have.
