I listened to the game on the radio. Had planned to go to the game (from Charlotte), but ran out of gas in the parking lot of a local honky tonk the night before and couldn't find anyone to take me to get it in time game day AM to drive to Raleigh.

As I recall, the NC State announcers for the game said in response to the horrible pass interference call that it could not be interference as the tuba player in the stands caught the ball, clearly uncatchable.

This article says NC State had to score twice in the last 60 seconds to pull out the win...Didn't recall that.

  • The Herd played Louisville in 1987. The article says this was the first game against a D1 since 1970.

  • If I remember correctly, there were two back-to-back offsides call on Marshall on I believe back to back 4th downs very late in the game.

There was a late flag after we broke up a pass. Really late flag about 5 seconds after the incomplete pass! The next play ncsu wins with a pass to a very tall WR like 6'6" to win the game. I was there.

I sitting with a friend at the game I told him to watch the end zone and I would watch the line of scrimmage. I hear my friend say we broke up the pass and I then watched the ref slowly take out his flag and drop it on the ground. The ref said we were off sides which gives the extra play to win the game.

You are correct. They miraculously got an extra 4th down and the timekeeper seemed to have trouble starting the clock for a few extra seconds. It was a total hose job.

I doubt that game was televised. We were I-AA then. You would have to find some tape-delay video of the game. I remember Donnan and Matthews being irate post game. That was the same season that we let Youngstown come back in the 4th quarter and beat us in the championship game after leading 17-6 after 3 quarters of play.

I remember listening to our play-by-play man, I was thinking Don Cook or the guy at Wake but can't remember, but on the second 4th down offsides he stated that he was watching clearly after the 1st penalty for offsides and that the flag came down as soon as the pass was incomplete.

I remember a very long bus ride back from Georgia after that Youngstown game.

  • I was at the game.

NC State had 4th down and was either out of timeouts or almost out of timeouts.  The pass was tipped and maybe even intercepted. Not that it mattered as it was 4th down. The game was, in effect, over as MU could run out clock. The back ref who was behind the QB threw a very late flag toward end of play and called MU offsides.  The worst call I have ever seen in person. NC State was ranked in top 10. Would have been first top 10 team to ever lose to a 1-AA team as I recall.

  • The very late flag for offsides was called against Jim Bernadoni. Film reviewed later would show he was nowhere near being offsides.

  • The article was a nice trip down memory lane.  That game was the worst hose job I've ever seen a Marshall football team have to go through (rivaled the first MU - WVU basketball game that was officiated by 2 members of the Mountaineer Athletic Club.... I kid you not).  The offside call and the pass interference calls referenced in this thread were unbelievable.  I thought Donnan was going to have a stroke.

  • We had a home game against Ohio University that rivals that game and it was at home.

We were all D-1 until 1978 when 1-AA was formed.  Every MAC school we played after '78 would have been against a 1-A team.  We also played Louisville in the early 1980s when they were independent but labeled 1-A.

Unfortunately, the refs walked into the crowd after that game had ended which lead to a ugly situation. I was at the game and the refs should have not have gotten near the fans and the fans shouldn't have ruffed up the refs. It happened the year before the plane crash and the fans were still mad about the expulsion from the MAC. The penalty calls against MU at the end of the game were terrible. It was one time that the refs actually changed the outcome of a game.

I am assuming this is game you are referencing?

I was going to say the same thing, we did play OU a few times and yes, they were D1
