  • I believe we are devolving into hero ball on D and just not keeping to assignments. I?m sure somebody was assigned to cover the TE on his two TD receptions, but whoever was sure wasn?t in the frame, so where was he?

  • When you score 41 points, especially on the road, I expect to win.

The D did get 3 turnovers, including a 29 yard field for 7 of those points and 7 of those points through a pick 6. But even with our turnovers, they didn't play up to par.

  • We are playing a lot of first year players, not in class assignment, but field experience. They were elsewhere but didn't play, for they're here playing at the beginning of their careers.  And, quite frankly, our LB core is desperate for improvement. The kid from App State has been a minimal contributor to this point, and one of our own has not developed and delivered as one would have expected; it isn't Neal.

  • Why does Porter seem less effective this year?

He's in on every sack and tackle for loss I've seen.  Probably saved the ODU game by stuffing them all day.  Runs up the middle aren't his fault.  He's not the problem.

He's got 2 guys on him most downs. He's still effective.

  • Huff needs to be the general and look at the DC , OC and ST hires. None have much experience on the D1 level in those positions. Trickett was hired as a WR coach coming here. He didn't do well at FAU as the OC. He's also our QB coach. :(

Maybe he's met his ceiling?  The VT left tackle pancaked him twice, the second time as if he were a high schooler.  It wasn't long after that that Porter and Alston were switched.  Porter was better against VT's right tackle.  I haven't re-watched the NC State game and only occasionally watched him live at the stadium--in those moments it just looked like the tackle could handle him.  Maybe against SBC tackles he'll be more effective--but there he may get double-teamed in ways VT & NCState did not have to do.

So I read this and I had questions.  I didn't watch the whole replay, only the first half.  Here's the link if anyone wants to watch:

Owen plays left defensive end which means he lines up over the other teams right tackle.
In the first half, VT had 6 offensives possessions.
Owen played every other series (so 3 or 1st, 3rd and 5th).
He lined up at left DE the whole 1st half except the 5th offensive series where he moved to RE (over their left tackle) and caused a fumble (he switched sides with Jabari Ishmael)
Alston played the series when Owen didn't (Either Burton or Ishmael were with Owen)
There were zero pancake blocks on Owen in the first half.
Would like to see some stunting by the D-line.

IDK that he needs fired, but this is where Huff earns his paycheck.  He needs to sit down with the guy and ask him what is going on in each play.  Then he might have to say, you need to throw that D out.

I don't remember what half it was.  VT was on the Ohio River side moving left to right in terms of TV cameras.  I sit on the East Side of the stadium.  Porter was on my side and was going up against the VT left tackle.  The first play I noticed Owen was put on his butt by the LT.  I said to my group of friends, "Watch Porter, I think he's having problems getting past the LT."  One or two plays later in a passing down he comes at the LT fast and hard and the LT flicks him backward on his back.  Several in my group saw it and were all surprised.  Later in the game I noticed Alston was going against the LT and having better success.

All true statements, but at the end of the day they gave up 48.  I know they defended a short field and as a team did some really good things to keep us in the game, but you just can't give up 48.

Biggest deal is that you can't have your opponents' most explosive plays being runs straight through the A & B gaps multiple times in multiple games, period.
In memory of Dr Daniel P Babb who taught so much to so many.

  • I believe the autoabile into those calls due to our d alignment.  If you watch replay, you'll see that many times we have our D linemen on the outside of the guards and only one LB in the center; virtually build a tunnel for them to run through.
