Idk. Have they been shown in the past? I'm always there and have no idea if they were streamed before. But this year a will watch if they are streamed.

  • Not sure. Probably will depend on how many home games the other sports have that day. And the man power that's available.

  • They have not been streamed in the past.

Also they haven't been part of the radio package from Kindred in the past.

Don't know if WMUL has covered in the past.

Let's hope we get some coverage this year.

This is not true. Both exhibitions against D&E and Pikeville two seasons ago were streamed on ESPN+. I sat there and watched them. In fact, they are still listed on the schedule for that year as ESPN+ games. Here is the link:

    https://herdzone.com/sports/mens-basketball/schedule/2021-22

I know what the call will be....."no streaming because we want people to come out to the games"......that is a horrible approach because Marshall has for too long won't face realization that a large amount of alumni live out of state. There is no excuse not to stream. I could care less about announcing since Jake left. I would just like some camera work during the games. D2 schools in this state on the lowest of budgets stream all their games. It is midget league not to in my opinion.

  • Can't say about streaming of said games.  Bigger issue, IMO, is whether our REGULAR season games will be broadcast on just a hand full of radio stations around the State and region, leaving about 70% of the State's population unable to follow the men's basketball games at least via radio on our TH "Network", such as it is.

Anyone notice the heavy coverage in HD media, at least the Charleston version, about the new show/podcast about WVU men's basketball and Big 12 ball by former EER Coach, Bob Huggins?  Guess they plan on saturating the airwaves, etc., with constant coverage of WVU basketball, whenever the team is not playing.  Just hoping MU can manage to eke out game coverage that at least reaches as many folks around the State that, say, Fairmont State or Shepherd does.  Not betting the farm, however, that that will be the case!!

  • Just logged into ESPN+ and checked the upcoming games schedule for Sun.  They only have two NCAA Basketball games scheduled.  Both are exhibition games and neither one is Marshall.

  • yes, it was great the year both exhibs were on ESPN+.
i think its important that out of towners and non-travel fans get to see these games.  you never know if any of them are potential big money donors, right?  i don't know if it's feasible, don't know how expensive it would be to have more than one/multiple ESPN+ crews at the ready, but it would garner respect from a lot more fans.  and someone mentioned WMUL- why can't more students get involved/get paid, sort of like the old days?

i'm assuming the football postgame guy is a student, b/c it gets pretty rough a lotta times.  guy is obviously reading from a script, doesn't phrase things the way you'd expect a seasoned sportscaster to, depth of sports knowledge really lacking, etc.

As a guess, since it's a free event, they're hoping that more local residents will show up, enjoy the show and return as paying customers.

  • i emailed AD staff this morning and asked why exhibition games cannot be streamed this year or any year.

my next question will likely be- how much money would it take to stream the 2 exhibs each year?

  • A more important issue this soccer and FB season is how the ESPN+ productions have been so amateurish this year...
Apparently HM was correct that Jake G leaving was a big deal.

so what does it come down to?  money?  if you have the money, is it finding people to staff the essentials, the barest of essentials, if an acceptable standard?  who or which entities have control over the media, specifically, the streaming/employee process?

  • IDK about the AD's internal structure in terms of production. I do know that ESPN+'s productionsvare up to the home teams and there were standards in terms of quality that each institution needed to meet in order for the events to be broadcast.

  • the very quick turnaround-response from my email asking why exhibs aren't streamed:

    Good afternoon,

As far as I know we have not streamed exhibition games for several years. But we have made the official decision as an athletic department this year that no exhibition games will be streamed going forward. Most NCAA institutions do not stream their exhibitions and we are following suit. It is a multi-faceted reason, most of which I'm not at liberty to share with those outside the athletic department, but I can assure you that we did have a lengthy discussion and consider the fans as best we can. I understand the frustration as a fan to not be able to watch your team every game, but as a whole it is not feasible that we stream exhibition games. Instead, we have increased the in-arena events for those games as a compensation to local fans and now consider them "Fans-First" games instead of exhibition games. I understand that does not affect out-of-town fans like yourself, but we are unable to stream exhibitions for a variety of reasons and it is unlikely that we will do so in the near future. Our goal is to stream as many games as possible to the highest standard across all sports, so we will be streaming all regular season home games for both Men's and Women's Basketball at a much higher standard than we have previously held. We have a lot of exciting new things coming to the broadcasts this year and I hope you'll be able to see how much work we've put into raising the standard for our broadcasts.

    1)  we all suspected there was much more to the "Fans First" thing overall, and i don't mean that in a conspiratorial way.  that with a new AD, just part of all the changes, in general, we knew were coming.  that MU is indeed looking at what peers are doing.
    2) that the AD is in the process of bringing media streams to a higher standard.

can't really blame Marshall for choosing this direction

    I agree...
However on the broadcast side, the FB production was horrible & the soccer presentation falls well below our conference mates.
So hopefully the process is accelerating, at least toward the standard that was in place before this year.

  • I think the soccer games at home have been pretty good overall. Good announcers and less video glitches than prior years.
