Topic: What I saw out of Cole last night:

Was a kid who understands the position. He 1000% made some Freshman mistakes that will work themselves out with game reps, but he made smart reads for the most part, he kept his eyes downfield, and took what the defense was giving him instead of forcing the ball downfield. He has some strength to gain, and some game experience to get, but he looked really solid for a guy in this third game ever in Division 1 college football. He also, as others have pointed out, recovered two key fumbles because he kept himself in the play, near the ball. Huge game awareness and moxy shown there.

We need help on the OL badly to protect him, but I?m encouraged by his play.

Remember, in Cato?s third game ever he threw 4 picks and 1 TD against (ugh) Ohio and he turned out pretty decent. I think with his pedigree, we?ll be well set with Penny2 going forward.

I hope we find a spot other than qb for a healthy Fancher. He?s a great kid and a damn good athlete. He?s just not a D1 starting QB.

I honestly think that Fancher could be a special wide receiver which we have not had in a few years. If he wants to see how much farther his playing career can go, it will be within a position switch.  Lot's of former QBs at WR and TE in recent NFL history.

You are really speculating a lot based on very little ?
Instead of trying to impress the forum with your QB acumen you could have said you like Penny2.0 mostly because of his last name.

I like Penny 2.0. There. You happy? But it wasn?t because of his last name. Nothing I said, aside from the part of his pedigree has anything to do with who he is. I commented on his play. Period. I liked what I saw and just as much as you have a right to harass me about it, I have the right to write my thoughts on a public forum.

Agree. I liked what I seen also. I think if they continue to build the offense around him it could be something special. Loved seeing the play action fake and the linebackers biting on it. Its doing little things like that which opens the middle of the field for some big plays. He throws a very catchable ball and seems to do well at placing it where it needs to be most of the time.

What is sort of funny is most likely the ones trashing Pennington are probably the ones screaming we are 9-1 with Fancher as the QB.

If his name was Tommy John he would still be a better qb than Fancher.  Nice to see a wr hit in stride.  It's not a coincidence that we had 2 big pass plays, when the ball is where it's supposed to be it makes things alot easier.  For all I care, it can be Harrison, McMahon or Parachek out there.  Just win and look like a qb.

How many starts did Wells have? Pennington has has 1 start. No one here is saying he's going to be his Dad but what they are saying is he showed some promise and poise Saturday and that they are excited to see him get more time to see what kind of strides he makes.

It's entirely possible that Pennington makes no strides and turns out to be another failed QB in a long line of recent failures. But, right now, what we've seen is enough to warrant the kid the opportunity to play, learn and grow as a D1 QB.

Whats funny to me, is it seems more like the negative A-Holes, like you are being more negative because of who he is, than the positive people are.

We just needed a change.  If Pennington doesn't work out try one of the other guys.  We had enough of a Fancher sample to know he is not the answer.  Find out I. The next couple of games so we can fix for next year if we don't have a guy on our team that is competent.

The one thing which is obvious from the detractors is that they are not consistent in their evaluations.  Cole has a game and half of experience.  Not sure if it is a grudge specifically against the Penningtons or whether they have some interest in another QB.  I particularly note they like to reference Cole's last name.  As an example of a similar situation, I am pretty sure Texas fans are excited they have a QB with the last name Manning on the team. Cole has given no indication of feeling entitled due to his name and has simply worked hard in practice and earned this shot.  We will all see what he does with it.   

Cole had a better first game than Fancher had in his first full game statistically.  It would have been stupid to not have given Fancher a shot to show how far he would develop, and the same applies to Cole. Whether it was Chad Pennington, Leftwich, Cato, or any other great QB from MU, their first games were generally not amazing and some of these games were against FCS opponents as first games. Pretty sure that if the handful of Cole detractors applied their standards to all prior MU QBs that none would have even started 5 games.  I am sure that USPAM fans will join you in your hopes that Cole does not succeed.

You have to let Cole finish out the season. Fancher just never progressed. Cole might not either. But again, he may, and that is what we need to find out. If we make a bowl that is 3 more games for him and a lot of practice time. He may show that he will be the guy and ready for 2024. If not then go to plan C. But he deserves that chance.

Cole hasn't made a big impact offensively in terms of individual numbers but I saw one thing change Saturday and that was running lanes for Ali to exploit which we haven't seen all year.  I'm no X's and O's guru but I wonder if having a QB who is a threat to actually make a pass to all parts of the field may have had something to do with it.  If someone on here who has experience coaching football and calling offensive plays would like chime in I'd be curious to hear their take.   Something changed that allowed things to open up the running game.

LMAO!  There is a lot to be learned about Pennington.  However, in his first start, he did show some things that neither Fancher or Wells could consistently show, regardless of TD/TO Ratio.   For one and two, he throws a catchable ball in stride to WR's which allows for YAC.   We haven't seen that from Fancher.  Wells could do it every now and then, but he lacked touch on his throws.   So 1 start in, we see some things that neither one of the others showed hardly at all.   His 1 interception, well that was on the O Line more than it was on him.   Regardless what his name is, the team scored 38 points.   We haven't seen that production in a while.
