  • I thoroughly enjoyed the soccer season and look forward to lots of success in the future.  Renewing my season tickets will be something I don't have to debate (unlike some of the other sports choices I have to make).

One thing I noticed as a fan at Herd soccer games is that a good portion of the people in the stands were in their 20s or 30s.  Contrast that with attendees at Herd men's basketball games, where the majority of fans are probably 50 and up.   The anti-soccer curmudgeons can continue to say it ain't so, but the sport is definitely on an upward path.  Travel to Cincinnati sometime and take a look at their MLS team -- they pack their beautiful new stadium on a regular basis and are drawing plenty of attention in the city.  Then take a look at the Reds stadium, which is regularly half-empty during home games.

I don't have a strong opinion either way except I believed we had a big advantage of playing at home and we lost to a team that travelled 3000 miles.  Can't use the Reds verses soccer unless you use total attendance for a season.  That is a better comparison.

There is no doubt it's on its way up because it started at rock bottom. The best thing to look at is coverage. The media will cover what is the hottest thing going and it's that simple. You have to search for soccer scores even during the tournament. Compare that to basketball tournament when CBS, ESPN, TruTV, TBS and others are carrying it and it's non stop coverage. Or college football game day etc,,, when soccer comes close to that then we will talk. Again it's growin but it's got miles and miles to go before it ever reaches those 2 sports.

  • There?s been a major push supported by Grassie and many others to split the season.

OOC games in the fall and then conference/NCAA tournament in the spring. Making this switch would be the best thing for college soccer. I hope it happens sooner rather than later.

Plus the tournament would compete with baseball instead of college football.
I'd love to see it moved.  The 2020 title game in May 2021?  I'd take that all day over December championship

  • How often does the consensus #1 for most of the season not make it farther?  I mean you're talking about seeds.  I think he was talking about the overall #1 ranking and the RPI #1 and the #1 overall seed.  That's a lot of #1-age to lose to anyone at home.  And even when we lost the #1 ranking, we took it back in a matter of a couple weeks.  We had a great season, no doubt.  But it was a disappointing finish.  To argue that it was not is just silly.

The last overall #1 seed to win the NCAA tournament was Florida in 2007.

I would love to see this happen.  I believe academics is a stumbling block though.  Teams can change dramatically as the semesters change.

Not much different than basketball now that goes from one semester to the next. It would just change the portal window to the summer.

This would mean they only play one game per week. Less wear and tear on the players, less injuries, etc.

UK and Louisville did it in 2012 and 2013 (although Louisville  technically had theirs vacated).

  • On the broadcast Sunday I thought they said UNC in 2011 was the last #1 ranked team going in to the tournament to win it all.

    We were talking about basketball.

But yes, the point is that it's hard to win 5 or 6 straight games against the best teams in the country, even if you are yourself the best team in the country.

The people in this thread trying to put down the soccer team for losing to Stanford are babies.

I?m talking basketball to show that the number one overall seed doesn?t usually win and often doesn?t even make the championship.

A regular season title is the best indicator of the best team because it shows consistent dominance.  Anything can happen in one game. Winning a tournament takes luck and is about match ups.  The best team doesn?t always win, but over a season the best team will win the most.

Right, I agree completely with your point, but I was correcting that UK and Louisville had won the basketball tourney as the #1 overall seed more recently than Florida in 2007.

Some truth to this. In addition the MLS draft is early in the year I believe (Jan or Feb?), so players would have to decide quickly about continuing to play or sign with a pro club. For college teams without depth it could be a crushing blow at most important time of season. Not saying there isn't a solution but there would be some logistical things to work out.

  • Disappointed yes!  But I have gone to about 4 games this year with elginherd and have become a fan.  I will probably get season tickets next year.  If you have never been to a collegiate game I urge you to go.  It is much different in person, constant action.  It is more exciting than either Herd football or badketball at this point.

  • Proud of our  soccer program but this would be a restart not a keep rolling.  We lost at home as a heavy favorite.  We are not currently rolling anywhere but to Christmas break.
How do you make it through the day without bumping your head?  This is one of the stupidest post i have ever seen...  Soccer is absolutely rolling.  Nationals championship and many weeks with the number one ranking this year.  Home field advantage.  Had a pretty good showing in post season.  It takes a lot to win a National Championship with a single game elimination format.  Good God some of you guys are just unrealistic.  I bet the MU mens soccer team will be ranked in the top 15 rankings come the first of the next season.  What part of that is starting over or rebuilding.  We are continuing to reload as i see it.  Please try not to bump your head!

  • If you look back at the last 4-5 years, the accomplishments are pretty incredible for a school where soccer was once an after thought. Like others, I say we'll finish around 10th or so this year and most certainly be ranked in the top 15 going into next fall, maybe top 10.

If Grassie can solidify the defense, another strong run is likely in 2024.

The ESPN+ production just doesn't do the sport justice. I can see why someone might watch it on TV and wonder how anyone can get into it.

In person, it's such a fast sport with a really positive high-energy vibe. Between that and the young crowds and pre-game tailgate/party at the little park, it's really clear we have something incredibly special.
