  • How much are you willing to up your donation to make it happen? Want a good QB to transfer in, better be willing to spend at least $500,000.  And, of course, you need some WRs and O line. It's going to cost in the millions.

The game has changed. And this is one of those times change is really bad. I've always been one who thought the players should get a little something. But they went from nothing to the flood gates are open.

The best thing that can happen is to let the big boys go their own way. And if they do, mid-majors never play them again. All this money being thrown around can't go on for ever. And I don't seeing it ending well.

As a fan, I truly hate it.

  • Just think, the whole "mops for props" thing would be nothing now. Hell, they wouldn't even have to give them mops.

  • We need to get back to "mops for props" or something like it.  I know we have the one nil program.  Time to step up and reach a little deeper if we want to compete.

  • I think the NIL will work itself out over time. It will be interesting to see how long the big money will be thrown around. My guess is that only the really good players will get the big bucks in a few years.

We are not going to compete in football with the OSU of the world in attendance; money or NIL money. It has always been that way and I don't see it changing. Once in while a G5 will upset a P5 in a football game. We just need the resources to compete with SBC and other G5 football programs.

Now in basketball you only need one or two good players with a good coach to beat the UK's of the world. Look at FAU; GMU and VCU have made it to the Final Four. Even Ohio U; Miami and Kent State have made it to Sweet Sixteen or to the Elite Eight. I don't see MU making a run in the post season until they hire a good coach; decide to invest the money and decide they want to be the best they can in basketball.

Where are you getting 1/2 a million for one college season?  I think that's more than the NFL minimum.
Are you saying all the quarterbacks get a half million dollars or just the best quarterback in the nation?

  • It will be interesting to see if players who are good college backs or lineman who are unlikely to go in the first day will simply opt to take an extra year to get NIL. Look at a player like Laborn. Great back but didn't survive the first round of cuts with the 49ers and was released by the CFL. Had he had another year of elgility, he could make a nice six figure payday for a college. The idea of leaving college early for anyone but projected first rounders may be coming to a close. We may also find a whole group of players who are like the Triple A baseball players who strive to extra years of elgility to hang around.

  • I'll also point out that Colin Parachek was the highest rated quarterback in the portal when we were shopping for a quarterback last year and we landed him somehow.  But of course we land these quarterbacks with 4 stars and the highest rated in the portal and somehow we can't develop them enough to put them on the field.

  • We don?t have to get a $500k+ portal player at QB. We just need an actual D1 QB who wants to prove himself.

    Stop making so many excuses.

  • Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule is one of the many coaches who will be scouring the transfer portal for players who can make immediate impacts next year.

However, Rhule knows that things are different nowadays, as he told reporters on Wednesday that he believes, "A good QB in the portal costs $1 million, $1.5, $2 million" in NIL deals.

That's where we look for the best FCS QB, offer 100K or so and roll.

  • There was a guest on the Dan Patrick show who talked about the players that were commanding big bucks from some of the large programs of the world. A few QBs were up there, but it was more consistently linemen from both sides of the LOS who were portal players from the G5 or FCS.
In memory of Dr Daniel P Babb who taught so much to so many.

I have said this multiple times.  P5 schools will mostly poached G5 talent.  G5 schools then need to poach top FCS talent.  FCS then poached the top D2 talent.  It stinks, but that the structure that NIL and the transfer portal has created.

  • Anyone know what the average NIL going rate is for a G5 QB through the Portal?

Average QB play would be a big step up from this season.  Fancher's ranked QBR is 101, PAA is ranked 99, passing yards per completion is ranked 99, and his TD to Int ratio is 50/50.  Pennington is not ranked.

I wonder how many football  players from the 90s and early 2000s would have been here four years if the portal and NIL existed then? I'm sure we would have lost a few. I can see Chad staying loyal even then, but not sure how many others.

And in basketball during the 80s. Probably Skip, Taft, and others.

When the dollar bills are waving in front of your face it's hard to say no.

  • Only 1 or 2 players will get that type of money.  We could get a good transfer QB for probably a car lease from the FCS.

  • He is not in the portal, in fact he is in the FCS playoffs, but Reese Poffenbarger would be a good fit for some team. A former ODU recruit, he had 31 TDs vs. 9 ints and 2800 yards passing. He is also fairly mobile and had us on the ropes. He's a bit undersized, listed at 6', but he seems like the kind for player that could take advantange of a good opportunity.

  • I hate NIL. This is why that never should have been done. Opened Pandoras box. "Can't be used for recruiting" yet everyone openly is. Athletes already got plenty, and a stipend on top of it. Them getting millions and hundreds of thousands of dollars is just absolutely insane.

But, like before, i expect this to totally kill my passion as a fan in a few years if no regulation comes. We'll never have great teams again, maybe the occasional flash in a pan surprise season, but then all those great players are gone the next year no matter what with NIL.

But, oh well, i guess all I'll watch will be the NFL and probably forget college sports all together. Maybe become a fair weather casual fan once a decade when we field a competitive team by accident.

  • It's only going to get worse

College athletes earned an estimated $917 million in the first year of Name Image and Likeness (NIL) payments, which began in July 2021, according to new data from Opendorse.

Opendorse, which provides technology to the athlete endorsement industry, projects the NIL market will produce $1.14 billion in NCAA athlete compensation over the next 12 months.

"We're seeing big spends and renewals on spends," Lawrence told Yahoo Finance Live "We've got national advertisers that are increasing their spend by 4x from Year 1 to Year 2, and that is a sign of the effectiveness of this medium, especially when those same advertisers seem to be limiting their investments in other sports assets."

Good post, 24.  I'll add that we have two attending MU right now as a FR and JR.  They get my NIL $$$.  We contribute to the BG, but I'll not be contributing more $$ to someone else's kid to play a college sport, at least while mine are in college themselves.

Found this interesting.  Maybe reorganizing?  Or maybe a sign of things to come across the G5 landscape.......https://www.wbtw.com/news/grand-strand/conway/coastal-carolina-nil-collective-for-football-stops/
