  • Coach Huff and Lane Kiiffin are close and I'm sure that he offered an endorsement and if nothing else, Kiffin knows offense. I'm also certain that Coach Huff ran it up the flag pole with the Administration as well. There's no one that he could have hired who would have satisfied the armchair ADs on this board.

People begged for something to be down about the end zone seats. They were tarped and many bitched. Plans for the new end zone structure is released and many denigrated that. In life when unknown scenarios appear, a wait and see attitude is always best. Welcome the new coach and give him a chance.

  • Can you put us under center a little more often?  Fullback or h-back would be a tremendous help in pass blocking.  And maybe, oh, 12-15 fewer bubble screens per game?
When I was head coach we ran the veer option. I don't think we ever threw a bubble screen but we did throw a few fullback options sine he had a better arm than the two halfbacks. BTW I retired with a 17-0-1 record when the Army came calling ending my football coaching career.

  • I don't know whether Coach Phenomenal Opponent should have mentioned resources or not, but it is a factor, whether we as a board want to admit it or not.

    Other factors:
    Huff's contract situation
The spouse's or girl friend's feeling about moving here.
The candidates' agents and/or colleagues' opinions
Whether a candidate is willing to move here

AFA the "Huntington ain't so bad" deal:
A large percentage of Herd Fans reside outside of this tri-state region.
And included in that are retirees, who by their actions demonstrate that in their view, Huntington IS that bad.

  • This is what you get when you have minimal money (has nothing to do with Huff?s connections or lack thereof).
If anyone wants to donate a few million dollars to the football program, I am sure Huff could hire a more ?seasoned? OC.

I am looking forward to a young and energetic OC who has played QB at a high level and knows what he is doing.
Doege will make mistakes (but we all make mistakes)...He will be an improvement over the former OC.

How about we give Doege a chance and watch him learn, improve and become a good OC.

    Mike...GO HERD!!!

We injected quite a bit of money into the program when Huff was hired. Cramsey made close to 250K when he left here. Trickett makes less, but he had less experience. I think we can find a good OC for 250K or more a year. I don't think it's a money issue at all.

  • Probably about the best we could do given Huff's contract situation. No one proven was coming.

Good observation. Anyone with common sense is not physically moving to new area to take a job that might last only one year. Compare this hire to what Dan has hired, Dan has not hired anyone special as an assistant.

I agree to an extent.  However, football coaches want to coach football.  Most of these guys work on 1-2 year deals as assistant coaches.  Some last a year or two and move on.  Some stay longer.  We've never seemed to have an issue of getting quality coaches to come to Huntington.  Don't drink the koolaid on that.  I've seen well known coaches hired at other schools on our level in just the past few weeks.  Tim Brewster at UNCC is one.

If you are so down on the tr-state region, why don't you move? Complaining gets you nothing but heartache. That is why I left the Richmond, VA area, it had changed over the years and I wanted to move to the coast. MU doesn't seem to have a big problem attracting good employees for the academic side. Some of the CUSA and SBC schools are not located in resort areas and they seem to do OK attracting good coaches.

All opinion based.  I have lived all over the US including at the beach in LA, work regularly in Manhattan, split time between NC and Florida and I will say there is good and bad everywhere.  NY and LA are dumps.  Enjoying an area is attitude driven, look for the good or look for the bad.

My son brought a friend to WV for Thanksgiving from another country and she loved Huntington.  I enjoy Huntington when I visit and go to Herd games.

  • I?m actually optimistic.

He was a record setting QB at Texas Tech. They are known for high flying offenses so this guy was very successful. He had a short career in the NFL/CFL. He also spent time on staff at Ole Miss under Lane Kiffin who also has a high flying offense.

On paper, this is a pretty good hire all things considered. He?s an actual QB and probably has some portal connections as well.

Wasn't Trickett an actual QB at FSU and WV?  No guarantee of anything there, but I like the enthusiasm and am willing to give it a shot.  If he's gone in a year so is everyone else and we get to start over and a chance to do better.

    I would've not returned if my wife's 4 sisters weren't here.
    She wouldn't have either.
And so why didn't you return to Huntington after Richmaod? Apparently you don't think much of Huntington either.

Anecdotally, in the 6+ years since we returned, both of us have had most of our doctors leave for other locations. That speaks volumes.

I don't hate Huntington, but Huntington itself is not a particularly desirable place to move to. If it was, then the population would be growing, not shrinking.

  • The best thing about Doege is that he threw for 499 yards as Texas Tech beat #5 WVU 49-14 in 2012.

Here you go with my list.
I have no family left in Htown and only two left in Charleston. I don't like cold weather, unless I am skiing. I like the beach and ocean so Huntington doesn't fit my desires. I am now in Florida for tax reasons. I am thinking of purchasing a condo in either Htown or the Lewisburg area for part of the summer, so I might be a part time visitor.

The biggest reason the area is shrinking is due to the loss of its manufacturing base and the decline of the coal industry. The only reason Htown was founded was due to its natural resources and the railroad, it didn't even exist until the C&O made the area its western terminus in the 1870's. That can be said of nearly the entire state.

Doctors leaving could be for several reasons. Where I live in Florida, the Cleveland Clinic purchased the hospital and a lot of the doctors didn't like the work requirements or in a few cases, the doctors were terminated for poor work. There has been turnover of doctors. Several doctors were hired to clean the hospital.

Finally I really like Huntington. The layout of the city and Ritter Park are very good. The HM has some nice exhibits. There are some nice restaurants.  I tend to dwell on the  positives not the negatives. I learn a long time ago to adapt and be positive about life. I am half glass full person and look for the good things in people and places.

That is correct about Kiffin.  I remember one of his interviews where he said himself, Kiffin and one other coach, maybe Sark would call each other once a week.  My guess is he picked up the phone, called both and asked what they had for up and comers.

One thing we need to spend some $$ on is the OLine coach.  That improves and so does everything else.

Off the top of my head, Brad Dourif attended MU. His family started and owned Standard Ultramarine and his mother married Bill Campbell after his father died. Members of the Fesenmeier and Blenko families and several of the children whose families owned banks attended MU when I at MU. Also, a lot of those same people attended prep or boarding schools. I have no problem with people with money and intelligence attending world class colleges or prep schools. Anyway, my last post on this subject.

  • I always get a chuckle from the interwebs geniuses who are absolutely, 100% convinced that if the head coach would simply take their advice, everything would be wonderful.  Reminds me a bit of the old military quote that has been attributed to different sources: "amateurs discuss tactics; professionals discuss logistics."

I doubt there is a single veteran on here from the world of professionals when it comes to college football coaching.  Perhaps I'm wrong and someone will tell us where he coached for 20 years.  Huff makes perfect sense when he talks about trying to get a person for whatever job we have open and noting there are numerous considerations those folks are going to think about such as money, location (it will come as a shock to many to learn that a hell of a lot of people have no desire to ever set foot in West Virginia even if that lack of desire is based on misinformation), family situation (maybe you don't want to change areas until your kids are out of kindergarten), whether you think your coaching philosophy and the philosophy of the head coach will be compatible, whether you perceive this as a move that will enable you to take the next step in your career, etc.  Beyond that, you may think the head coach will be on the hot seat next year and you don't want to move into that type of situation.  In other words, lots of things for anyone to think about before even applying.

Having said all that, I'm willing to give the guy a chance.  Our offense the last couple of years has not been good and we need to be doing something different.  I have no idea what that something is but let's see if this guy can figure it out.
"Our founding fathers ... drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations.  Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expediency's sake." - Barack Obama Inaugural Address

Oh Huntington isn't all bad. There are positives.

None of our doctors left because of bad work. They are now in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Columbus. In two cases, one of the big reasons was of the conditions after the merger. They didn't have to put up with sh#t, so they didn't.

    Now regarding your present digs:
You have voted 'no' on Huntington, or you'd be living here fulltime.
The reasons don't matter; it's still 'no' for you.
If you were truly a half-full guy, the cold wouldn't deter you from contributing to HUntington's economy full time.
And in Huntington, you don't see roaches as big as mice.
