  • I always get a chuckle from the interwebs geniuses who are absolutely, 100% convinced that if the head coach would simply take their advice, everything would be wonderful.  Reminds me a bit of the old military quote that has been attributed to different sources: "amateurs discuss tactics; professionals discuss logistics."

I doubt there is a single veteran on here from the world of professionals when it comes to college football coaching.  Perhaps I'm wrong and someone will tell us where he coached for 20 years.  Huff makes perfect sense when he talks about trying to get a person for whatever job we have open and noting there are numerous considerations those folks are going to think about such as money, location (it will come as a shock to many to learn that a hell of a lot of people have no desire to ever set foot in West Virginia even if that lack of desire is based on misinformation), family situation (maybe you don't want to change areas until your kids are out of kindergarten), whether you think your coaching philosophy and the philosophy of the head coach will be compatible, whether you perceive this as a move that will enable you to take the next step in your career, etc.  Beyond that, you may think the head coach will be on the hot seat next year and you don't want to move into that type of situation.  In other words, lots of things for anyone to think about before even applying.

Having said all that, I'm willing to give the guy a chance.  Our offense the last couple of years has not been good and we need to be doing something different.  I have no idea what that something is but let's see if this guy can figure it out.

    Excellent post.
In memory of Dr Daniel P Babb who taught so much to so many.

Consider Marathon Petroleum - Ashland or Catlettsburg Refinery............................. they have both if available or qualified.

  • I won?t have an opinion till after spring ball. My preference would have been a successful FCS OC, but I?m going with the every great OC has to have a first shot. Didn?t work with Trickett, but different person.

I do like that he worked with Kiffen if only for a year. I like that he played in an air raid offense.  I hope he wasn?t hired because Huff just likes young guys that will be yes men, because I worry about that with him.  Let him do his thing and run the offense he wants. At a minimum he knows the TT air raid play book.

  • Okay he has no OC experience. So we'll roll the dice and hope everything works out.

    Yeah that usually never works

  • You never know. There is one positive. He isn't Trickett. And for what it's worth, every OC in the country had someone take a chance on them st some point or they wouldn't be on.

That being said, i still prefer a proven FCS offensive coordinator. Bring him, the QB and all the WR.

  • I hear he was Graham Harrell right hand man. That tree comes from Mike Leach which likes to throw the ball all over the field.

Hey bust, could that possibly mean that the HERD will actually start throwing to its tight ends more than once in a blue moon as we currently do??  Also, will the HERD passing attack start including things like post and seam routes, slants across the middle, and the like which have been all but invisible in the MU passing attack for several seasons now?!!!

  • Considering Huffs hot seat, this is a fantastic hire. This guy knows the spread offense, and has ran it. I expect his to be QB coach as well. This is how young minds start. This is a home run hire. Now the recruiting has to catch up to filll the scheme.

  • I would think Doege's biggest influence would be Neal Brown, his former QB coach. To get an idea of what his offense might look like in time:

". During his tenure at Texas Tech, Brown perfected his NASCAR spread offense. The offense created by Brown focused on players running to the line immediately after the play and quickly snapping the ball before the defense could get set. The offense requires speed at every position to be run the way Brown envisions it. The focus of the offense was to snap the ball eight seconds after the previous play. The 2010 Red Raiders ranked 15th in the country in total offense, 6th in passing offense, and 72nd in rushing offense."

  • Saying he sounds like Trickett is just stereotyping him.  He also sounds like Willy Korn who runs a very exciting offense that lead Coastal and Liberty to Championships.  Every offensive coordinator has to start somewhere, they all did.  The last proven offensive coordinator we got was Tim Cramsey.

  • Antonio Morales, who covers Southern Cal for the Athletic, stated that Doege was a "strong recruiter" for Southern Cal.

If he can bring in a portal QB with a good arm, then we start in the right direction.

  • Gonna have to hit a home run with a portal QB, 2-3 OL and a fast WR or two. Not to
Mention a few guys on defense. A tall order for Huff and crew

definitely.  i'm withholding judgement on this hire, but if we break camp with Fancher as QB1 again next fall, my 1st impression will not be a good one.

  • No crap, because he doesn't have any experience for the position.

Think most were hoping Huff would try and reach out to someone that has experience even at a lower level. This shouldn't be the place for on the job learning especially with what the OC consist of.

Hope he's Norv Turner and sets records here with Huff.

    Just very underwhelming if true.
Playing QB at a high level gives you most all the tools you would need to be an OC.  No one knows how this is going to work out.  Whats bigger than an OC is to get a better line and find some way to keep Ali!

Agree. We'll see what happens. Good to hear he's familiar with a wide open offense. Will Huff let Doege run his system and, if so, will Huff be able to get players from the portal who can successfully play in it?

  • Doege has played and coached under way better offensive minds than anyone we've ever had at coordinator position. Does this make him good? No, but I would expect him to bring an attack that he is familiar with which is more air raid style and less RPO/zone scheme.

Obviously the lack of experience as a play caller is everyone's concern as it should be, but this can't go any worse than the last two years is how I am looking at it.

  • That's true.
In many now former residents' opinions, Huntington isn't desirable or they'd still be living here.
Many who left Huntington for various purposes (or the area) would not recognize Huntington now.  I think you guys aren't really aware of all that Huntington offers in terms of entertainment, food services, nature and the old fashion family-feel.

Of course, I could be wrong, I've only lived in the New Orleans burbs, Jacksonville, NYC and Philadelphia areas, so I don't have a lot of experience with big city problems or whatever (sarcasm). And oddly enough, there were great parts to all those areas, including the first drug distribution stop coming out of NYC.  You find what you look for, wherever you live.

  • About Doege, he may have experience with a good passing scheme offense, but the offense we run is Huff's offense.  Trickett said on more than one occasion that the offensive scheme is Huff's scheme and not Trickett's preferred offense.  Will Huff trust his paycheck to Doege and let Doege install the offense he wants to run based on our personnel?

Doege better bring some offensive skill players with him and hope the new OL coach brings some linemen.

  • An equally important hire coming up is the new O-line coach. Without a good OL, it doesn't matter what plays are called.
