  • I didn't think it was that bad. Duquesne is much better than Miami.

Good to see Crawford developing a good role on this team. We need more of that. McKey needs minutes. He has sat for a long time during the past season and a half. He makes mistakes but he can give us good minutes off the bench.

I just think Dan needs to change the offense up some. He can't run the same stuff that he had with Taylor and Kinsey. He needs to run more high-low action with Martin and Obinna. We don't need OAK 20 feet from the basket.

I would rather see Pruett over Conner and Fricks at this point. Dan needs to play an extended zone more often. This isn't a very good man defensive team.

Crawford looked like the only solid D1 player on the squad tonight.

  • There is no rah rah in losing. I just choose not to be a miserable fan and let the AD do his job. I?ll buy tickets as long as I am able, I?ll go to as many games as I can and enjoy Marshall sports. Life is too short to choose to be miserable. This is fun, not life and death. I think this team can turn it around. If they don?t, I?ll be disappointed but I?ll be back next year.  That?s what fans do.
I will continue to support these young men and women who choose to come to Marshall and represent our university and compete hard and want to win. It's all about them and their growth which sadly is getting lost in today's athletic environment. Win or lose, and yes loses are disappointing, I will support them.

  • I listened to Dan's postgame press conference.

Like I said earlier, I am encouraged by what I saw. Not satisfied. But feeling better than Saturday. I think Dan hurt the team in two areas last night. At one point in the first half, he had a terrible 5 on the floor that couldn't function. It was a terrible substitution pattern at that point in the game. He also let them go on a 14-0 run before he finally took a timeout. You are at home in the middle of the first half. You could see the team unraveling once it hit a 7-0 run. Sitting there not calling a timeout was a huge difference in the game. We went from leading 12-7 to being behind 21-12. That was the difference. Bench coaching matters!

And for the life of me, he has to tell OAK to stop shooting three pointers. He was 0-4 last night. He is currently shooting 17% from behind the arc. Last season, he shot 14% from behind the arc. For a guy that proclaims to study analytics, why won't he have a serious conversation with the young man? Even Ot said last night that when OAK shoots a three in the half-court set "it is pretty much an empty possession".

The only thing that I was encouraged about was that we held our own rebounding and perhaps that Crawford looked like a legit, polished basketball player.
OAK is the bricklayer in Chief for sure from the arc, but DD's system depends on 3's being knocked down in the 36-38% range at a minimum. OAK's not the only one contributing to the current 25.5% rate from three.
Overall FG percentage is a horrid 40%.
There are some bad shots being hoisted up, no doubt. But this team doesn't hit the wide open looks or the bunnies around the basket consistently either. Defensively, we're switching too much, leaving bigs out front checking quicker guards and having the shortest player on the floor guarding 4s or 5s in the paint.

    Ball handling skills?
    That's a whole other post.

As far as DD's assertion that this team is fun to watch, WTH!
The offense looks jagged nearly all the time. The players may deserve our support, but it definitely is neither an entertaining nor winning product.

Now, the Herd will have a game or two where they shoot lights out, upset a better team or two, and we'll get all excited and DD will say perhaps we have turned a corner. But then the shooting will regress to the mean.

This is a mismatched roster, the parts don't fit together.

Nothing encourages me until we sign a new coach. We just don't have enough D1 players. Crawford and Martin are probably our 2 best players and guess what? Portal players developed somewhere else. Crawford has 3 years so why not go get 4/5 a year like that and lock them in? Danny will just never change. I'm tired of excuses and tired of the regular season not mattering. And I'm tired of not having a coach on game day.

  • How can anyone listen to the interview and be encouraged.  He basically had a million excuses, says we may lose the next 5 games and hopes by mid February we may be decent.  He says he enjoys coaching and fans just need to cheer and enjoy.

He is not going to use the portal to build his team as MU fans want long term players that develop.  Problem with that is we will lose our best players to NIL big schools.

  • The program appears to be a train wreck. How would everyone react if the football team started out this badly with .285 winning percentage for the first part of the season? Dan's current winning % for this season is currently .285 and he says we will get better? He needs to go back to coaching high school basketball, not at the college level.

  • The best thing Dan can do for the basketball program is to announce his retirement.

You nailed it with we will get hot and win a game here and there and fans will excited. I've been saying this as well. We can even win the tournament in this weak league. If App or JMU get upset by someone or we get hot one game and beat them because nobody else in the league has a pulse. Doc and Dan have so many similarities. They both got into an easier conference. Both had one year run. Both never know when to go.

The above tells you volumes about the players on the current MU team. "During the 2021-22 season, Crawford played in 22 games for the Sycamores, averaging 3.1 points and two rebounds" at Indiana State.

  • Dan is playing for the lowest NET ranking in the country. Some of his decisions my grandmother knows are bad moves and he will try them out. His style since he has been here is screw the regular season and hope to find a way to win the tournament which has worked once. Herd fans get to see history every time they play. The oldest coach in D1. That would be a good marketing strategy by the athletic department....All jokes aside.. It's gonna take next to a miracle to pull us out of the hole he is going to leave us in.

Actually in basketball you hire the right coach and it can be turned around quickly with the portal. Just takes a very good recruiter with contacts.

  • I was shocked how much McKey played last night. Of course, the p.a. guy called him McKay most of the night.

What I saw last night tells me if Dan got involved in practice, it did no good. The first time Obinna launched a three, he should have been pulled. As someone else mentioned, he needs to work about 13 feet in. This team is just not playing good.

There is no discipline. Or at least not consistant. He will bench Crawford and cut Voyles minutes for things and turn around and let others like Obinna launch 3s at any time. Danny's teams have to shoot the ball really well against good teams because he just lets them play street ball and out of control.

I blame Dan/staff for OAK launching 3s. He never shot em in HS. For all intents and purposes, he didn't shoot 'em 1st half of his FR season. Then all of a sudden he starts launching em like he's Steph Curry. It only stands to reason that someone must've been on him about shooting em. & Dan won't tell him to stop. In his 4 yrs, you could live with his % his SO season, the other 3 yrs have been nothing short of horrible.
