Topic: We Are Marshall

Recent events had me thinking about the scene in WAM in the chapel when Jack says  all that matters at that moment is that they play the game. Wins and losses and even how they play doesn't matter. He then says one day what will matter will be wins and losses and that's when we will honor the 75.

39 years ago I sat in the mini dome at Johnson City and cheered on the Herd as we beat East Tennessee 31-28 to achieve our first winning season in 20 years. 6-5. Wins over the likes of WV Tech, Morehead, Eastern Illinois. Losses to Chattanooga, Furman, Western Carolina ( who beat us 30-0).

We rushed the field. It was a great feeling. We dreamed of that next step actually making the 1AA playoffs one day but that seemed a long way off. For that moment this feeling was amazing. We stayed on the field a long time celebrating 

And now, in 2023, we are disappointed in being 6-6 and going to a bowl game.

Two thoughts. First, this is why I don't take the opportunity to see Marshall in any bowl game any time for granted. I remember each step from the crash on that got us here and how monumental each step has felt.

Second, each step is another way to honor those 75. It means more here as everyone knows. Many of our fans now only know success. They weren't around for each step. But we all have the same passion.

For us who have been there for each step we don't want to take a step back. It's been a long climb. We are proud of who we are and what we have become. It means something that now all that matters in winning because it is true that is how we honor them.

So I will always support the Herd. I will always been excited, and honestly still a little amazed when I see Marshall in a bowl game or on the same field with a Notre Dame or Ohio State, let alone actually win.

And, yes, coaches and players need to know that winning at Marshall now means more than it does at many places but we will support you and cheer for you as long as you honor and respect Marshall and give everything you have to the Herd.

Because one thing we know all to well. It can all be taken away in an instant.
