  • Since Goherd24 is licking his wounds I'll keep his thread going.

Danny has no idea how to adjust and when he does it's usually a half a game too late. All any team needs to do against us is isolate and break down guys like Conner, Fricks and Curfman and get to the hole and make things happen.
Crawford played a great game. Danny decides to make an example out of him but over the last 10 years has let everyone else play street ball and shoot as much from any distance they want.
Obinna either makes great plays or is totally out of control. He should never have the ball in his hands leading a break. He has no idea how to finish with the ball in his hands.
As usual we are a couple good quick guards from being good. I'm glad we have 4 scholarships stuck to the bench after all these years.
As Ot said, we have played our weak part of the schedule and needed this win. It will get a little tougher in some of the games coming up.

  • Unlike you, I'm a true herd fan, and was at the game so no time to post because we actually support our marshall teams. Not licking any wounds you cancer. But start your own trash thread instead of trying to be a worthless troll. I've never seen someone that is just sitting there hoping and praying we lose so you can come on here and spout non-sense. You complain when Dan doesn't discipline players then complain when he does and sits them, like Crawford. You talk about how bad our schedule is and trash teams like utah state, then when they are 16-1 you talk about how quick a good coach can do that, like its a common occurrence, Lol. You should be banned from this board.

We started too slow, and ran into a team that got embarrassed and somehow found a way to shoot the lights out. It happens. We lost. We never quit fighting. Voyles had a bad game, and curfman has to make better decisions and cut down on turnovers. We threw it away at crucial times when we had a chance to get it down to 1 or 2. Crawford came out and showed what he can do. Had a wonderful game. We'll keep getting better and we'll be just fine. On to ODU.

Boo hoo you little crybaby. Everytime basketball craps the bed you make excuses. But when football loses you are ready to go after Huff with all you got. We beat 2 cupcakes and barely got by doing it. Georgia Southern is 2-14 and we was lucky to get the win. Tonight we play a team that lost to Alabama by 60 and JMU by 30 and you are making excuses again. Just grow up and admit your boy can't adjust and his team is .500 playing an average at best midmajor schedule. And take out Bluefield and he is 8-9. Good grief I wish you gave the football team the same leeway you do basketball.

  • Here is what every damn supporter should know after watching this team the last three to four years. One point and one point only:

If Dan comes back next year at age 77, then I know that Spears needs to demand that he hire a defensive assistant who is in charge of the defensive game plan each and every game.

    Period....end of conversation.

Mike in Houston had to take on Jeff Bzdelik as his defensive assistant coach. We need to run this like an operation. And that starts with a coach on the bench with a quality defensive background. There is no excuse in how poor are defense is when we play teams with a pulse.

Switching 6-0 guards onto 6'9" defenders on the block needs to go away. Switching your post player onto a hot shooter needs to go away.

What I know....and have known for several seasons.....is that we desperately need an assistant coach whose sole job is to come up with the defensive gameplan each week. I am sick of the crap I see on defense in games where it counts. We lost today because of poor defense from the get-go and it was even worse coming out of halftime.

If Spears has no say on the head coaching situation, then he needs to make a move on this staff to get a guy in here with a strong defensive coaching background. South Alabama had 78 points with ten minutes left to play in the game.

Pot calling the kettle black. You just can't handle the truth is your problem. You have invested in Danny so much with your talk that you would rather die than admit you are wrong. When you can crap on the football team last year after 9-3 and still make excuses for Dan at 8-9 excluding Bluefield then that tells everyone all they need to know about you.

  • We are what we thought we were.  Slooooow at the guard position again.  To slow to guard the perimeter which causes a bunch of switching and mismatches. Then due to the switching we always lose a guy who is standing wide open.  We switch everything defensively which is just shall I say Stupid or Lazy you pick. We will be middle of pack in the Sunbelt.  Yeah.

I don't think we were watching the same game. I don't want to take away from the great offensive game Crawford had but he's a liability on D, just like much of the team. Opponents made shots over top of him all night and he can't or won't close out - opponents guards can and did easily drive around him. Maybe we can outscore some opponents.

  • We did not have the two E's today -- effort and effectiveness.
Because of that we got down by 21 but damn near came back enough to win.
If we get them back we can and will win.
We have talent enough to win the SBC and we have the depth. We need to quit looking for the pie in the sky answer and just start doing what is needed to get the job done. Become effective with what we do and put out a maximum effort doing it.
That's what the  women's team does and its what the men's team needs to do.
    End of story.

What we know is that Crawford can be a scorer. 10-12 FG and 3-3 from the 3 is smokin' hot. Let that sink in.

Respectfully disagree. Depth is bad. You don't redshirt two juniors and bring back two 5th-year seniors that don't play.

We can't win 3 straight conference tournament games with the players we have off the bench. It just isn't there. And the Iron Five philosophy won't work in this era. It is ridiculous that our head coach believes it will. It has failed in three straight conference tournament and make it four straight this year.

We have no guys coming off the bench that are a defensive minded player that knows his role and can come in and lock down on a guard. Championship teams have that....we don't.

We play so undisciplined it's not funny. No defensive help and no urgency on D. No adjustments by the staff either. We are struggling against really bad teams. I can't believe some of these people don't understand how bad most of these teams are. And we make them look good.

  • Well our next game we should get back in the win column. We play ODU who is 4-13 and 0-5 in the league. The last 4 games we will have played the #11-12-13-14 place teams in a 14 team league. Let that sink in.

I agree 100%. We have virtually no depth. Fricks just isn't very good and doesn't do much unless he gets a dunk. Really bad defender. Nutter is a hard nosed kid but just isn't much of an offensive threat at this point. Crawford is a good offensive player but has problems of reverting back to me ball and he is a really bad defender. And that is basically the only three we have off the bench. The problem with Dannys style of freedom basketball is it allows the kids to be free and explore their game which is good in a sense. But it also opens up a lot of baggage each player has also because they can't self discipline themselves. Obinna is a great example. He is playing some great ball in certain areas now. But if you add in all of his out of control problems it negates a lot of the good. You have to value every possession and every shot and that is a huge problem with Dannys teams.

Last sentence is spot on bust.  Do you possibly think that Danny just doesn't realize that fact due to all those "catnaps" he takes during the games while standing still along the sideline by the HERD bench?

  • I didn't watch the game due a conflict so I won't comment on the game. Just some general comments on posts in this thread.

    1. Interesting the one poster mentioned Utah State which is now ranked #20 in the poll and is 16-1. They lost their coach from last year and every player that scored a point in every game last year. The new incoming coach hit the portal and replaced all the players and now has a ranked team. He did bring some players from his old team to USU. The point is the portal can be a coach's friend. Again, a coach loses every player from the team and finds portal players to be ranked. That is good recruiting and coaching.

    2. Suggesting Dan bring in a defensive specialist is an interesting idea, but Dan should be teaching defense. Maybe I am wrong, but maybe Dan thinks that just coaching offense will win every game? Sometimes you have to play defense to win games. That apparently is a failure of Dan's coaching coaching philosophy.

    3. The idea we are lacking E and E is on the coach. If the players are not doing their jobs on the court, a coach goes to his bench and puts in players that will follow the coach's direction. Unfortunately due to bad roster management/recruiting, Dan doesn't have the horses to substitute .

    4. No matter what you think about Bust, he is very knowledgeable about basket. I know several posters on this site who also know basketball and they agree that Bust is smart about basketball. Some may not like his demeanor, but he knows what he talking about.

    5. A lot of us need to grow up and be more respectful. Claiming to be the true fan and not realizing the team has short comings is not good. A lot of the posters seem to be Dan fans first and not Herd basketball fans. They are too invested in personalities and don't see the problems. Calling a poster a worthless human being because he posts his thoughts is childish. I have learned a long time ago not to drink and post, and others need to follow the suggestion. On the other side some of us just need to ignore posters we disagree with and not try to win every thread. Most of us know which posters have the basketball knowledge. I guess I have pissed off the two factions.

  •    One last thought ? could we please replace Mark Martin? If I have to hear him make a brag that we have the oldest head coach in the country one more time ? It seems all he talks about are the coaches on both teams, who players may be related to etc. Very very little about the actual game.
