  • What would you think if Huff is named the next HC and conference rival University of Southern Alabama?

No way Huff is even being considered.  If Huff was only as good as his agent...  Anyone know who Huff's agent is?

  • I'm not saying this will happen. But I think he is 100% interested and a move LIKE this could happen. I said over a year ago...don't be surprised if he makes a move exactly like this if he doesn't have the type of success that would make a "P5" come calling.

This is the exact type of thing that will make Marshall Fan's heads explode...but makes sense for a guy like Huff...gets a huge upgrade in location all around...which is his biggest problem with being here.

Huntington needs to get its act together. Right now Marshall needs Huntington more than Huntington ever needed Marshall. There are just too many better options, even at the G5 level, for a head coach to bring his family for a few years and for "stepping stones". We no longer even have a history of getting coaches to the next level... been almost 3 DECADES now! Crazy.

  • Would be kind of bummed at this point.  He has put together a heck of a class and I?m excited to see what he can do with it.  It would be a lateral move at best.

  • This could happen.  Huff can talk his way into this position.  I am wondering if there is a rule that allows the 32 guys he just signed to transfer immediately if a coach leaves.

Not sure what the rule is or where to find it but I did hear that when Saban retired, the Bama players had 30 days to transfer.

  • Well I guess you can add Huff as a candidate to Buffalo job that just opened. I posted the link to this in USA HC to Bama thread. I don't see the interest in either sides to this deal. I wonder if USA promotes Applewhite to head coach?

That would be the smart move by them. 2024 will he Huff's last year in Huntington. A welcome relief for he and his family, and Marshall fans.

  • If Huff isn't confident that he can turn things around enough to earn an extension, then this could be his way out.  He can head back to Alabama and being near the Gulf Coast may be attractive to his wife.

I not sure if going back to Bama is an option for Huff since Saban is no the longer the coach? DeBoer is apparently keeping only two of the current Bama assistants. I am not sure if DeBoer knows Huff and seems to be hiring coaches he has worked with in the past.

  • If Huff can get a winning season, I think he'll get an extension on his contract. And with upgrades to his staff and this recruiting class, he's on his way to doing that.

I'm not saying that you're wrong, but IMO Huff was brought in to improve upon what Doc was doing.  So far he's maintained the status-quo and the program has maybe even take a small step backwards.  I hope that Spears laid out exactly what Huff's team has to do next season in order for him to get a contract extension.

  • I think how it could unfold is Huff has a good season thanks to portal additions and natural maturation, is offered an extension but passes on it, gets a better job at the end of the season, no buy out needed.

we think that about huff's classes every year.  every offseason, he brings in a healthy # of FBS transfers, decently-ranked recruits, etc. &, from the outside, looks impressive.  & then at the end of every season we wonder what happened to all those guys, seems like only guys really making plays were doc's recruits. 🙄

Not being argumentative, you make some good points.  But his prior classes are no where near as talented as this class is on paper.  You?re talking a top 10 nationally ranked transfer class.  High school recruits are great to develop, but most likely won?t be around a year or two anyway so it?s really hard to get excited about them. But I 100% understand your view and I?m one of Huff?s biggest critics.  But he has done everything in his power to try and right the ship this year.  I know we all hope we can win a championship this coming year.

  • I thought I heard Jimmy Sexton is his agent

That would explain a lot.  Sexton represents several head coaches Huff has worked for or with including Saban and Franklin.  Sexton probably has all the major sports media outlets and countless sports reporters on speed dial which explains how Huff can get positive media coverage even in a down year.  It also explains how Huff's name repeatedly pops up for job openings.  ADs call Sexton wanting to know about this coach or that coach, Sexton sends the AD a list of his clients that are looking for a new job.

I truly hope you're correct about being top 10, but I'm not sure where you're seeing that. 24/7 has a rankings list and we are currently 67 nationally. I think we are number 1 for G5s though. Which site do you use?

Having said that your point still stands that this transfer class is his best ever.

I agree. This class is beyond impressive. I don't even know how he is bringing in all this talent. If they can get them to mesh then this team is LOADED!!!

I was just talking to someone about the how... he openly says we don't have much money for NIL and he's a coach with a 1yr contract, so I'm not sure how he's convincing players. I'd like to hear the pitch.

True.  If Huff is hired away the whole team has 30 days to enter the portal.  Be careful what you wish for.

  • Unless his wife forces his hand I don?t think he leaves.  He has added a bunch of impressive players in the portal.  If he believes in his recruits he stays and parlays that to an extension or a P5 job.
