  • DD was kicking and screaming about moving to a weaker SB league in basketball when the move was announced. He didn't like it. Now it seems the tune has changed.

He historically finishes 6 in league play regular season (showing that this year). Doesn't look good doing that now in a league that was considered steps below cusa.

  • If a one-bid conference ever wants more than one bid, beating other one bid conferences will not make that happen.

Conference teams need to schedule and BEAT the bigger schools to make that happen.

Tired of the excuses and the Danalytics crap he makes up and expects everyone to accept as facts.  Time for a change

  • If you listen to his press conference videos over the last year, he is doing everything he can to make fans believe nothing special can happen at Marshall. He is becoming Bob Marcum!!! I'm so tired of his arrogance talking about analytics as if they are facts when he says them. He is always talking about how the players need to do this or do that but he NEVER talks about what he could do. Like play a zone when his slow guards out front can't stop penetration against quick guards for layups. Or call a time out when the other team is on a run. Or admitting he needs to recruit quicker more athletic players. Nope, he just says they need to play better. I laughed when he said they were working on closing out on the shooters and playing tighter D out front lol. Then Conner, Fricks, Curfman and Martin will really get burnt when those quick guards go right by them.

Then he says if you win the tournament nobody will ask your record. Nope, but when you are 15-18 and are a #16 seed you sure have handicapped yourself. Honestly he should be fired at the end of the year just from these press conferences and how low his expectations have become. Clean house!!!

but you know that's not gonna happen.  there is no way our AD is gonna pay him ~$1.5M to send him home when he just signed a brand new contract before this season started.  as I've stated before, i think Marshall has made it pretty clear over the course of the past 5 years or so that we're not going to be in the business of buying out contracts.

  • I talked to one Dan's Practice Groupies the other day. He said that we are not playing well because Dan lost 60% of his offense with Kinsey; Andy and Micah leaving the program. Apparently this is Dan's excuse to his groupies for the bad record? I responded that Kinsey couldn't play forever since had he exhausted his eligibility and the portal gives and takes away. I then said that it was Dan's recruiting failures and his inability to use the portal that caused these problems. I started to bring up his horrible coaching, but sometimes it is better not to debate with a danete or danite.

    Huntington, we have a problem.

Unfortunately, this is probably the most realistic scenario. Especially if you factor in the D'Antoni influence ($$$, sister on on the board, etc.). With that being said, fans have the power to not attend games, donate, etc. If I remember correctly, that strategy helped oust Snyder and Doc when it was apparent they needed to go.

It's evident what you think by your various posts....but what did the "Practice Groupies" (as you called them) have to say (other than losing Kinsey, Andy & Micah). Surely something else was discussed.

Not sure what you mean? I had a phone conversation with my friend who relayed the information to me. We didn't discussed anything else about basketball during our conversation. By the way, he is very close to Dan but he is starting to realize that Dan needs to be replaced.

Wow!  I used to be one of those practice groupies and left -  I am so concerned with the direction Marshall is heading as I'm in my 80's

I no longer have season tickets in both major sports BB - FB -  It is Very Obvious Marshall Administration is content to be average, knowing they can always get a decent following.

I will always cherish the Parrish, Chump, Donnan, and Pruitt days as well as Tacy, Aberdeen, Donovan, and Huckaby teams!!

With that said I wish them well and hopefully the administrators will understand the direction needed as Marshall fans will follow in large numbers as I followed the Teams/Coaches listed to ALL BOWL games and ALL BASKETBALL Tournaments!!

Sports writers Like Chuck and people with influence and money need to understand the damage they are creating.....

Enough said - I will always love the fun years I was able to follow.   Again good Luck!  Marshall's BB/FB are going to need it.......

Up until about a month ago, Dan was bringing this up in all the interviews about losing those guys, so I'm sure he uses it as a reference to his followers. Even though those guys haven't played here in almost a year....

As you alluded to, we wouldn't have had Kinsey last year without Covid, and Taylor doesn't have an extra season without covid either to go to MSU.

While Micah helped on the defensive side and rebounds, towards the end of last season he was a no show because of getting into foul trouble (which the coaching staff did nothing to stop him from bad habits that caused those fouls).

Think we got the better end for this season with Martin and him starting at Center (good job from the coaches in recognizing him and Voyles).

We have 5 scholarship players that play very very little or are red shirting that are upperclassmen.
Dan should have moved away from them each of the last two seasons to bring in other players that could help the team and were actual D1 players.

It seems we have zero interest in getting a PG that can create, we just try and force players in that position and hope for the best.

We have talent on the team, but the way this roster is structured and coached, it was doomed from the start.

  • Spears said at the end of the football season when there was questions if Huff would return for the final year of his contract, that "Marshall lives up to their commitments."  I said at that the time that he was talking as much about Danny as he was about Huff.  I've felt for a while that the built-in excuse for this season will be that DD lost Kinsey, Taylor and Handlogten.  The administration will conveniently overlook all the dead weight that Danny recruited that is sitting on the bench, including two players he chose to bring back for their bonus Covid season.

Danny is correct in that since the SBC is a one bid league that winning the conference tournament is the most important thing, but it isn't the ONLY thing.  If the team starts the season 12-0, or 11-1 and gets ranked in the Top 25, that is exciting for the players and the fans.  If the team wins the vast majority of their games, then that is exciting for the players and the fans.  If the team competes for the regular season championship, then that is exciting for the players and the fans.

Danny is also right that basketball is entertainment, but he thinks that the team simply has to play an exciting brand of basketball and winning doesn't matter.  After a while if you are not winning, then it doesn't matter what brand of basketball you play, people will stop watching.  Winning is exciting to fans.  People want to be associated with a winner.  I think we all know that Spears hands are tied when it comes to the basketball program, but I'm sure it frustrates him to hear the head coach openly say that wins and loses do not matter.

Maybe the term Practice Groupies term was too strong. I also was a Practice Groupie when I last lived in Huntington during the Ellwood and Sonny years. I remember attending a football coaches film event at the Owensize (sp) Club at the Owens glass plant. I guess we both have the skill to recognize when a program is on a downward trend. We need to separate the love for the coach from the program sometimes and move on.

  • I would guess Danny has to know he is losing fans. The so called practice groupies have to be less than they were. As Collins said he has stopped, I have stopped, scope has stopped and a few others that I know of. The sad part is every single bit of the downfall was self inflicted by Danny. A few people say he will be gone at the end of the year but I disagree. He seems more comfortable and no pressure than I've ever seen him in these press conferences. Unless there is a big turnover in the BOGs then I think he knows he is in great shape for as long as he wants to be here. The only thing that will change things are a lot of empty seats. Danny is working more on changing the fanbase expectations than he is on coaching.

Great post. With the last post game conference I too, am convinced he is going nowhere. Like Collis, I attended every bowl game, spring games, tournaments, bought season tickets every year in bball and maybe attended one game just to help out the department.I am finished with that stuff.

  • I've found I enjoy watching our minor sports now more than football or men's b'ball. Haven't been to a men's b'ball game this and don't plan on going. Too depressing.

The minor sports are doing well and have bright futures across the board.

Over my lifetime of being a herdfan and an alumnus of our Great University,  I have never witnessed such a propagandized, cya, situation worse then what is taking place every day before our very own eyes in our Mens Basketball program...

There have been so many who have given and supported our mBB programs at Marshall over the past 75-100 years or more who if still living would March to the Presidents house this very day and demand change...our present day mBB program is a disgrace!

We honestly once attended basketball games at Marshall believing we could compete and defeat top 10 nationally ranked basketball programs. We truly once did this and were successful doing so...The minutia we have fallen prey to has led us to a state mediocrity...we have allowed our mBB program to devolve into a laughing stock of a program locally and nationally.
    We need leadership...we needChange!

He was referring to being senile and out of touch.  Regardless of what you think of Trump, Biden is those two things.  And so is Dan.
