  • It is just time.  He stated again it is not about winning.  He wants to have 4000-5000 people in the Cam and have players that stay all 4 years and become part of the community.  That is just not realistic.

The goal is to win and that is why the score is kept.  He went on a rant about the conference should not play P5 teams because we lose.  He will schedule 15 easy wins and then hope to get to 20 if he remains our coach.

Actually spoke about the record does not matter and just need to win the tournament because we are a 1 bid league.

  • To quote a great Marshall alum and coach. "If you are scared, get a dog". Football went on the road and beat Notre Dame and Dan would never win a game like that. It is sad and Dan is in over his head in college basketball coaching. He needs to hang out at the Y on Saturdays and coach a Biddy league team.

He says that the only things that counts is winning the tournament. So if he doesn't win the tournament, he has failed per his standards.
Again, he says the opponent has older players, he needs to look at his roster. He also judges a team's performance on the attendance or the fans in stands. Well, if he keeps losing the fans won't show up.

I think Dan realizes that he is in trouble and he just has excuses for his problems or failing at coaching. He mentioned travel and flight plans. I think that the WB success has him worried or jealous.  Hopefully this is a sign that he is leaving.

  • They should stop these press conferences or let Kim do both. Caldwell has the winning mindset.

Someone should tell Dan he is going to have to win 4 games in Florida.

  • He makes more excuses than anyone I've seen. If he did pull a miracle and win the tournament we would be a #16 seed with our record. Good luck playing UConn, Houston, Purdue etc lol. That would be a total embarrassing moment in front of the country.

And he cherry picks everything. Bragging about the SB and cherry picking a couple loses on the road. Yes Houston beat a couple SB teams by 40-50. One game was 81-39 I believe. But he doesn't mention all the losses to mediocre smaller teams the conference teams lost. NC Central, NC AT, Northeastern, Ball St, Little Rock, Jackson St, Bowling Green, Southern Utah, Mcneese St, Jacksonville, Lamar, Sam Houston, Nichols, N Florida and E Michigan just to name a few.

It's like the longer he coaches the lower his expectations are. We need energy, excitement and a coach that wants to win big and move up. Dan is draining the life out of Marshall basketball. Look what Kim has done in less than one season. Beat Florida and in first place in her first year. I don't hear any excuses or lowering of expectations because she believes in what she is doing. Danny spends his entire press conferences telling us how it can't be done and his arrogance about his NBA stories blah blah blah. Results Danny is all that matters!!!!

  • Well Dan in the video is complaining about playing big time programs is interesting. His theory of its not good for your team to play tough competition or "Money Games" or the big boys on the road doesn't hold water. How about Morehead State. They played at Bama; Penn State; Purdue and Indiana. Lost of all of the games but only lost at UI by one point. (We all remember how Dan's team did against UI. a few years ago with his all time scoring players.) Morehead is now 20-5 and in first place in the OVC. Morehead is #102 in The NET and MU is #216. In the RealTime RPI Morehead is #80 and Dan is #200.

This is embarrassing. I wonder if the MSU coach has charter flights for away games? Does every team MSU plays have older players?

I guess Dan just doesn't understand scheduling in college basketball. The above data just blows up Dan's theory of scheduling easy college basketball games. To Dan, only wins counts no matter the completion? I realize Htown is not the greatest location in the world, but is Morehead, KY the Rome of the Commonwealth of Kentucky? It just shows the Danites or the Danettes that it is time for Dan to retire. Dan needs to retire, hopefully Marshall has a list of potential new coaches for The Herd to replace Dan.

  • Does Dan just say stuff to say it?? He blatantly lies.

He says James Madison was only one to win a P5 OOC game and that was Michigan State and he says he looked it up and they were 2-4 at the time.

Actually Dan, if you would?ve looked it up you would?ve seen it was the opening game for both JMU and Michigan State.

Also if he would?ve looked it up, he would?ve seen App State got a win this year over Auburn, so that?s two big wins by both teams and it has gotten them both noticed.

His philosophy of just scheduling wins does not work. He tried that last year and went 24-8?..nice record?.but because he refuses to play anyone that 24-8 record didn?t even get a sniff of a NIT invite.

He?s grabbing at straws badly and it?s making him look really really bad

Now you know Dan has said Morehead is beneath us lol!!! EKU and Morehead are both in first place in their conferences. But Dan doesn't want to play them because they aren't up to our standards. Dan lives in a alternate universe where his thinking, talk and coaching doesn't equal reality.

As I've said before, if he wants expectations to be that low they should cut his salary at least in half, cut ticket prices in half, and stop requiring BG donations for season tix. Think about this: Chris Grassie had 4 P5 wins in one NCAA tourney. Morgan Zerkle has had 5 games in her coaching career and already has two P5 wins vs Michigan State. Coach Caldwell is 1-1 vs P5 in year one. DD is winless in 10 seasons. Good teams won't schedule Marshall not because they are afraid, it's because the horrid NET rating hurts their chances of postseason and DD's attitude turns people off. The league is one bid because the indy teams don't do enough to try and be top 100 programs. That starts with scheduling and recruiting. Things DD refuses to do. I don't care how great of a person you are, lazy is never a good look.

  • I'm not defending him, but there is no P5 in college basketball. There are about 8 conferences considered top leagues. So, actually the win over Wichita would be considered a win over a top tier team. Again, not defending anything. That was a great win but the only one over a big team. But please quit saying P5 when talking about basketball. It's not a thing.

  • Everything he says is just more proof he has zero reasons to hold the position he holds.  When he was a player did he care if they won or not?  I bet he did. Did he want to beat teams he was an underdog too?  I bet he did.

He is not only failing the program, he is failing the players by not putting them in the best position to win because he?s too lazy to put in the work. You can not win games against equal or near equal talent without putting in the work. That means scouting, game planning, opponent specific strategy. It?s what causes most coaching staffs to work 14 hours a day.

Imagine this, Huff decides our defense is really good at pass defense and has an abundance of great corners. Because of this he?s going to play a dime package every snap on defense.  On offense we are best at running the ball so we are going to run it every play even if the other team plays their goal line defense every snap.

That is the depth of Dan?s coaching.

Technically correct but you can call it whatever you want. P5 is just a way to say the best 5 or so conferences in whatever sport and I think people understand that. It's quicker to type P5 vs "the better conferences in the country". It's semantical.

I know you are not defending him per se and what I am saying here is not directed at quoted poster. I agree the NCAA tourney win counts as a major conf win since they were ranked in top 20 at the time, but the fact that he doesn't want to schedule anybody good from any top conference is the reality. And when he has played them he has had a few close games but most time they get waxed. It's fairly evident he goes into those games expecting to lose if you listen to him speak before and after those games. Even the win vs the Shockers was not scheduled. He somehow thinks he can avoid them all year and then take them down in NCAA tourney. That's not logical.

We all know he was forced to play UK this year. Spears even said at the time that we need to play Quad one teams. My question for his supporters is why does he get a pass when the rest of our programs, seemingly, strive for much more out of their programs? It seems the goals now are the have the worst NET rating possible and still win 20 games. He wants the rest of conference to accept mediocrity as well. If anyone on here had a kid who was a legit D1 recruit, would you want then to play here under DD? I'm sure he has plenty of money with his teaching pension etc. He can enjoy MU basketball and his family from the stands.

Saw a clip of Coach Zerkle either Friday or Saturday and the reporter asked her about playing the P5 teams over the weekend.  She stated that it makes them better and she can see where they needs to be.  Very refreshing.  Here's a coach that could have padded her record early but she sees the big picture.  Coach Caldwell did the same and we spilt those two games.  And it doesn't matter what the SBC conf does, it will always be a one bid league unless a team goes out and schedules and beats a few P5 teams.  IMO

Throw in when it does not work it wasn't because of anything the coaches did or didn't do or could have done to change the outcome.

It's always the players were not tough enough and the other team wanted it more.

  • Two things I got out of that:

    1. He is not going anywhere.
    2. Talks about Texas State shooting the lights out against us last year. Seems to happen a lot to us, could it be possible that our close out defense is horrible. When you do not place any emphasis on defense that is what happens.

yes, the move has ended up really exposing him.  you complain how weak a league is, then you're a 1st game exit in the tourney your 1st year.  & then follow that up with a mediocre/middle-of-the-pack run your 2nd year.  fortunately for him, that's apparently 'good enough' for the ones that matter.
