I think sooner than later we make a Grassie-like commitment to Caldwell. We may eventually lose her to a true major, but we can do all we can to allow her to be successful and build something amazing here. I'm not sure we shouldn't hand her the men's program. She's smart and driven.
I was telling this to a family member today. We should be talking about making a commitment to Women's Basketball like we did with Soccer. Sports outside the major 2-3 are much easier to achieve greatness in with the right coach and support. If UK is paying their coach around $800,000, I am sure we have some boosters who would be willing to help us give at least a competitive salary.
A decade ago, we could NEVER have imagined our soccer program being where it was now. We are currently playing in a summer league with the likes of Ohio State, Butler, Michigan St, Louisville, Michigan, and Xavier and we are leading the standings! We are a power program in soccer. I believe with a coach like Caldwell, our women can also become a power as well.
Remember that UCONN wasn't the power it is before Gino, one coach can change everything, but we must be willing to put the money and support behind our winning programs.
