New Conference USA member will travel to Huntington on Sept. 6, 2025

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? Marshall Athletics announced an agreement for a football series with Missouri State on Thursday.

The series brings Missouri State, a new Conference USA member, to Joan C. Edwards Stadium on Sept. 6, 2025, while the Thundering Herd will return the game to Springfield, Missouri, on Sept. 19, 2026.

"Playing Missouri State, a brand-new member of Conference USA, should be an engaging series for us," said Christian Spears, Marshall's Director of Athletics. "They wanted to play Marshall and early on, we recognized their sincere desire to bring their team to Huntington."

It will be the first-ever contest between the two programs and it serves as a unique series between a former Conference USA member and a new Conference USA member.

Marshall played in Conference USA from 2005-22 before moving on to the Sun Belt prior to the 2023 season while Missouri State will be a new member of Conference USA in 2025 as they transition in their first season at the FBS level.

"They will be new to FBS, but they bring a great group of passionate fans to Huntington and a competitive team who is looking to make some early history," Spears said. "We will reciprocate with our return game in 2026. Spot the ball!"

  • I went to Springfield, Missouri and to the campus on Missouri State in 2016, although not for a sporting event. It's not far away from Branson for country music fans. It's an alright place, but nothing special. They have the world's largest Bass Pro Shop there. I probably would take a pass on a return trip.

We should definitely play them in soccer. A perennial top 20 program that uses a lot of internationals like us

Government is the most dangerous institution known to man. I told someone last night, based on how poorly our national US mens team has played the last few years, and how bad the US development program seems to be, Grassie is smart to take as many internationals as he can; regardless how pissed some opposing coaches may be with that.

  • So, in other words, we traded a home and home with ECU for Missouri State?  Makes no sense to me at all.

  • I'm excited for this series. I love playing new teams. Missouri State wanted to play us and I bet they bring a good bit of fans to Huntington. This series excites me much more than a MAC or a WKU series. I'm tired of playing the same ole teams.

As for the SEC team in 2025 it has to be between South Carolina, LSU, Ole Miss, and Vandy. Only one of those is truly "special" and that is LSU. I dont think its Georgia as they already have 12 games.

Less than 7000 attended their last home game.  I seriously doubt many fans will make the 10+ hour trip to Huntington.....

It'll be their second FBS game, I bet they bring more than ECU, WKU, or any MAC school outside of Ohio.

FYI: Their home attendance was lower than most MAC teams. They had home crowds last season of 11,002; 8,727; 11,386; 7,700  and 6,868. I don't know if that is the actual attendance or tickets sold? I have no idea of how well they travel.

Maybe they wont bring the best crowd but our games with MAC members and CUSA teams aren't that well attended anyways. Im just saying I like the idea of playing teams we have never played before.

Their games with UCLA is canceled, just hasn't been announced, back to athens.

ECU cancelled our series and one other for games against NC and NS State I believe. Something like that.

    I agree.
And many of our FCS opponents haven't exactly been powerhouses at that level. Missouri State is better than a team that is a MEAC bottom feeder.

Before we all get upset about FCS, many of the SEC programs schedule FCS or very low level FBS as game 7-9 as sort of an extra bye before playing a rivalry game.

i don't recall SEC schools being accused of having a schedule full of HS teams & sisters of the poor, either

i believe that charge is lobbed our way A LOT!

I am too. Missouri State and an FCS school is just a bad home OOC schedule.

If you can't get a P5 at home I think you need two G5s. One of which being a military academy or an old rival.

I don't care how many other teams schedule an FCS game. It's just hard to get "up" for a game that's a foregone conclusion nine out of ten times.
