  • Now that the team down south (App State) is copying our ?We are ?? slogan, it made me wonder how long has that been Marshall?s chant at games. I know it?s also used other places (eg, Penn State), but I have to imagine Marshall is one of the first to use the chant. I know that it was in use in the late ?80s when I first arrived on campus, but when did it really become a thing at Marshall?

  • Per the Marshall website an exact date is not given but it started in the 1980's.
?We Are?Marshall? has been around since football games in the 1980s at the university?s old Fairfield Stadium, where the stadium scoreboard would light up with alternating arrows to indicate which side of the crowd should lead the cheer. Since then, ?We Are?Marshall? has become the rallying cry for a resilient school and community.

FYI Penn State says they started the WE ARE chant on September 11, 1976 so they were the first to use the We Are Chant. Nothing wrong with copying a cheer IMO.

  • Penn State's chant predates ours but the cadence is different. At the time we started using it, we were fielding a bunch of players from Culloden and would have never dreamed of playing Penn State. It's hard to see on the day to day basis, but we have come a long way.

  • There will always be one "We Are".
The We Are Marshall movie solidified this...
I'd hate to play We Are in Huntington this year...🏈

  • First time I heard it was the 1987 JMU 1AA playoff game. I had not heard it before that date.

  • Thanks, I never knew that it started right around the time I arrived on campus. For me, it seems so ingrained into Marshall-isms. Maybe not so much for those that went through Marshall earlier.

So maybe it?s just me, but I view App State?s use to be ?infringing? or at least disrespectful. But it could also be true that I just like the opportunities to bash CrAppy State! 🤣
