  • He hasn't been a beat writer for Marshall sports in like 15 some years (or whenever the Daily Mail sold to the gazette).

He's an opinion columnist on general things, typically a few times a week he has a column.

  • I figured once DD left, Chuck wouldn't be far behind or at least fewer columns

  • It's a relatively slow time.
    He's probably on vacation.
In memory of Dr Daniel P Babb who taught so much to so many.

I've known Chuck since 1969. He and I have always been friends. He cares very much about Marshall.

I believe that Chuck personally knows Danny D. pretty well.  He gave Danny a lot of slack in his columns.  Nearly as much as MU itself did in letting Danny remain as the Head Men's Basketball Coach which was several seasons too many, IMO!!

Nothing Elgin wrote would indicate otherwise.  It's a slow time because fall practice hasn't started and other sports are not going on.  This is the time where a sportswriter would take a vacation if he/she were going to.  Perhaps you should call him and ask where he's at rather than manufacture some slight that was not given.

  • Chuck said that after the car accident he has some degree of memory loss.
That would certainly be bad for an opinion writer.

  • Miss Chuck Landon articles as well as Ernie Salvatore.  Legacy media is dying so hopefully Huntington will get some other media options that covers the Herd better online.
I don't like to lose, and that isn't so much because it is just a football game, but because defeat means the failure to reach your objective. I don't want a football player who doesn't take defeat to heart, who laughs it off with the thought, 'Oh, well, there's another Saturday.' The trouble in American life today, in business as well as in sports, is that too many people are afraid of competition. The result is that in some circles people have come to sneer at success if it costs hard work and training and sacrifice.- Knute Rockne

If we only had journalism dept with the foresight to create a sports media information center that could, as part of their major, publish online interviews and articles exclusive to Marshall sports, their conference, and their opponents.  Advertising could easily sponsor the cost of the website and then we would just need to get computer majors to implement the website.  Where would we find those?  They have almost unlimited free labor for grades.  Silly they haven't done this by now.  They could also have a social media dept to influence on TikTok, youtube, instagram, facebook etc etc to passively get views to their website.  And have forum liaisons make posts pointing to new material on the more prevalent Marshall boards and take information from those boards to share with their followers, thereby increasing traffic to the forums for mutual benefit.  This is all virtually free, of course.  But what do I know.

  • Excellent thoughts.  Football has started adjusting to social media in recent years but the comprehensive approach you describe would help really boost the program.  Many Marshall grads like me don't live in the news market for MU.  What you describe is one way to connect fans across the Country.

At WVU, 3 guys before the game is an example of a very good broadcast (at least IMO).

Not quite that old.  GenX, not Boomer.  Born in '69.

  • With Ernie gone, Chuck retiring and Doug Creasy heading to greener pastures, I hope the HD can find and afford replacements.

I love a good local sports columnist. Some of Ernie's and Chuck's best work were after semi-retirement and each did a weekly column.

I bought the Saturday paper just to read Ernie's column.
