  • This kid deserves some props. He took a lot of heat from us (myself included). I thought he looked really good today. If this is the Stone Earle we get the rest of the season then we will be fine. I was really impressed with him today.

  • 3rd game here and has played in two hostile environments. He looked good today against a talented defense. I think some of our short yardage calls need work, but we also ran some nice stuff on offense.

Earle is not my concern tonight.

  • I think the quarterback "controversy" is over for the majority of fans.  Earl was efficient for most of the first half against a $20M NIL team. Let's see how we do in the next few games. I coming away encouraged.

  • He?s solid.  Improved a lot each game, especially today.  And with our big strong receivers (if they catch) the downfield ball is going to open up.  I say we hang 40+ on WMU next week, assuming he?s healthy.

  • Much improved.  Hopefully he keeps improving and we can compete for a sunbelt championship.

  • He did pretty good today.  Looking like next year we could see a freshman under center or another portal Qb.

Too be honest, with the current rules of college FB, I expect a portal QB every year. Good ones are gonna get paid somewhere else and the bad ones will get replaced.

  • it's usually a safe bet to rely on the coaches to pick their No. 1 QB.

i still feel good about Doege's system as compared to the last couple of offences

He just needs to use his run game more when it?s working with the right backs.  And Conley is a good TE but is not being used.

  • Hopefully he is consistent with his play moving forward.  1 quality outing out of 3 isn?t consistent.  He needs to torch Western Michigan.

He played a quality game against Stoney Brook.  Quality enough to let in 2 other QBs to get reps.  Lot of teams struggled against bad FCS this season, especially in game one.  We didn't struggle at all after the initial rust shakeoff.  If we'd had better hands against VT, Earle would have looked a whole lot better and he did get a TD pass against them and sustained several good drives.  Agree we need to do well vs WMU.  We are still right on schedule with most everyone's predictions from preseason.

  • Braxton got 2 series. First one he showed escape skills when cornered, reversed to the other side of the field and threw a medium pass and the camera work was so incredibly poor that I did not see what happened. They then put focus on Fitz so I guess the latter had dropped it. Braxton went to bench to me like he was very mad.

Next series Braxton threw high under pocket pressure on a slant on 3rd and short. 4th down. Ugly pass.

They then put in Pennington for the rest of the game to get knocked on his back like last year on his first pass and then hand off against 7 or 8 in the box except on 3rd and long. I see no evidence that he is ready for a D1 QB spot.

Earle looked pretty good against superior athletes and being hampered by poor play-calling ( I missed all but the last few plays of the first Herd drive, it must have been a thing of beauty ). Just my thoughts.

Why do you believe he has been hampered by poor play calling?

  • Stone played well.  I think the equipment manager needs to find the right shoes or cleats for Stone to not slip as much.

I was in favor of Braxton getting reps at VT.  Glad he got some today.  But Stone is clearly QB1.

  • Rock98dog or similar handle posted his opinion on the Nation that Earle is probably  the 8th or 9th best SBC QB. Stone acquitted himself very well yesterday but I still don't see his accuracy as being consistent enough to win the SBC. Maybe as a team we are good enough to win the East in a down year for the Conference.

And maybe we will actually targ a TE or a RB now that we don't have to help out the OL as much in remaining regular season games.

Accuracy:  Earle 16 of 21 against the number 3 team is pretty darn good, many in tight windows

Yup.  If he can perform at or near that level against our peers we are in for a surprise this season.  Also anyone that is saying our guys can?t tackle are wrong.  Some of the same posters were saying the defense is good after the first 2 games.  The problem was OSU had elite athletes and we did not.  Football is about angles when tackling and our guys were just getting beat and trying to make a play.  95% of college football will take a butt whoopin in Columbus.

I hope you are right with your confidence, but tell me the difference in coverage style between VT and OSU and how Stone had only completed 44% of his passes in the first two games and then jumped to yesterday?s performance?

  • I don't think Stone will be all SBC, but he seems to be the best option we have at that position. I think some are forgetting that Stone didn't arrive on campus until almost July so he has been at a disadvantage with experience in the program. I am hoping his performances will improve as the season progresses. If he gets hurt, I think the season will end up a disaster. Instead of knocking him, we should be hoping he improves so we have a shot at a winning season or even the championship. One good thing about Stone, he has thrown only one interception. If he can keep the TO too a minimum, that might make up for some of his shortcomings.
