  • I hope you are right with your confidence, but tell me the difference in coverage style between VT and OSU and how Stone had only completed 44% of his passes in the first two games and then jumped to yesterday?s performance?

Dont really think the type of D made the difference,  it was the poise and confidence that Earle displayed.  He grew up during the off week, night and day.

  • Overall he solidified his #1 spot as our QB. Still not progressing quickly enough if primary receiver covered.

  • Yup.  If he can perform at or near that level against our peers we are in for a surprise this season.  Also anyone that is saying our guys can?t tackle are wrong.  Some of the same posters were saying the defense is good after the first 2 games.  The problem was OSU had elite athletes and we did not.  Football is about angles when tackling and our guys were just getting beat and trying to make a play.  95% of college football will take a butt whoopin in Columbus.

I saw one of our most experienced DB's take a wrong first step defending basically a slant and the OSU receiver was gone to the house. So little margin for error that it was not surprising we gave up so many yards per reception and yards per carry. Hope we can get some takers on the unlimited biscuit offer!

Shouldn't be anywhere near as hot here on out, so hopefully cramping is much less an issue.  I mean the guy played in Texas.  I gotta believe our weather favors him.  But it was brutal Saturday outside.

It makes a huge difference.  VT essentially presses and contests every throw. They play their safeties down, bring more pressure, essentially just create a lot more stress on the offense. Ohio State played the whole first half with two high safeties. They basically only rushed 4 the whole half also. This equals more time and open windows in the middle of the field if the  oline holds up, which it did.  This gave Metcalf a lot more room to operate. Stone targeted him 9 times and he had 8 catches.

Even after his game Saturday, Stone is still 13th in the conference in completion percentage and is 12th in yards per attempt and yards per pass. That means a lot of short passes, which should mean a better than 53% completion rate.

He did play better Saturday, but Ohio State stayed very vanilla because they knew they could just out-athlete us.  Let?s see how he does against WMU and App, teams that will mix up their coverages and blitz.

  • Earle looked the best he has yet which is a good sign. Ohio State did not really come with any crazy blitz packages or coverage rolls that their DC is known for. I'd say this helped Marshall out, but overall a confidence builder for the offense as a whole for sure.

Braxton didn't play enough for me to have an opinion. A couple decent plays a couple bad ones and a few handoffs. I still think we are better off this year at the QB position than we have been should QB1 go down or something like that.

As weak as the SBC is this year some consistent QB play and some minor tweaks on defense this team has a chance to fight for the east title.
