  • The bottom line is that, as the more he wins the higher his "stock price" goes! SBC Championship? Plus Bowl Win? the higher the price goes. Either for Marshall OR out in the open market!

  • Supposedly there were some informal conversations, but no formal extension was extended.
    That?s not what Pete Thamel said in a column just before the season started. It was all formal according to him.

    Don't believe everything you read in the media.

    Are you still upset that Marshall has a pharmacy school and did the new construction on Hal Greer Blvd?

    If he leaves, he will have left the program in better shape than your fellow poutie Doc left it. No more uspm coaches at Marshall.

  • I'd say if Huffy wins two of the potential next three (JMU, conference championship and bowl), he's definitely out of here. Maybe just needs to win one. If that's what he wants -- and previous indications suggest that it is --  more power to him and my very best to him.

    I've not been his greatest supporter, but if he does opt to stay and finally decides that he wants to be one of us, I'm OK with that too.  Give him a good raise and a two-year extension.

    If he does go, who does everyone think we should try to get?  What are your thoughts on Rich Rod, who has had a pretty good year @ Jax State? Just playing the Devil's advocate here.

  • I wish the message board and social media fans would learn from this and not want to run coaches off every time we lose a game. He needed time to establish himself just like the next coach will need time.  Most likely we won't be keeping him because the damage has been done. You know who you are...the same guys are already dogging Corny after every loss.

  • If we keep running off successful coaches, we are just going to end up with losing coaches interested in being here. Good and relevant is always better that bad and irrelevant.  Good coaches occasionally have great seasons but that's not going to happen every season.  Irrational fandom is a killer.

    Absolutely true. Absent robust NIL and staff salary pools, what could Marshall offer a prospective up-and-coming coach? A lot, I think:

    1) Plenty of time to get the program to their liking, with patience if that means a couple of bumpy seasons;

    2) A culture of winning where former coaches have gone on to do big things, or retire (Donnan/Pruett/Huff). Only Doc's forced retirement and Snyder is a blip here;

    3) The perception that the Marshall job is one of the best in the G5 despite the financial constraints. When we're hot, we're really hot. Remember how much attention we got from ESPN in 2014? That's possible if we string together successful seasons. Compare that to the attention MAC schools or the F_U type schools get.

    Why do you assume we are running him off? It takes two parties to make a deal and when one side is really not happy, it makes it tougher.

    This guy was hired as a head coach in training - that should have been clear to everyone. Have people forgotten the ECU meltdown a few years ago. Our strategy was to pour fuel onto a fire and make GD sure we lost. As pointed by some he has under-achieved given the resources he has had. Yes, we loved that he put together a team that could win at a then-over-rated ND. Few if any could have done that with our resources. But his recruits (Laborn) and an experienced and talented D and secondary carried that day.

    I don't like being a CT but when your star RB goes the length of the field untouched and then sits out in a bowl game that was an obvious setup to begin with, at what point do things like W-L really matter.

    The MU "good ol' boy" system has me terrified that after Huff is gone we will hire someone who can't even recruit or bring talent from the portal. All the best X's and O's in world will not remedy that. He's been hit and miss with coaching hires and deserves a solid "D" grade for his overall tenure at the QB position.

    To top it off, he has so far not related to the fans. For all the good, the understanding of the 75, etc. and great "George Allen Style" relating to players there has been a negative in the press. Blaming the fans for demanding accountability for his blunders. It is not good that we feel we want to retain him because of the fear that we will hire someone not even mediocre.

    Huff was the one who said Huntington was a tough place and hard to recruit to. He was the one who supposedly turned down an extension, twice. Of course it would great if he stayed, but only HE can determine that. Not gonna lose sleep over it, that's for sure.

  • If he interviewed for USM you know for sure he?s gone to somewhere after this year.

    As far as leaving us better, how when the players he doesn?t take will transfer anyway?  We should offer the job to Doege and see if he can hold on to some our offensive players.

    Please.

    Number one, a coach should not be reading message boards.

    Two, a lot of us have supported basketball for a long time. A lot of us have really been told mediocre is okay. Marcum and Hamrick always seemed to think that men's basketball was always fine and we should shut up. And it doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that Dan stayed around way too long. Every one knew that one. When the rules of college basketball changed (portal, the way you recruit, etc), he should have retired. Instead he spent the first two years that the portal was available b!tching about it.

    Is it wrong to hope for more than one NCAA bid in 37 years?

  • I would prefer Huff stay.

    But if he leaves, is Bryan Harsin a possibility? Guy received a huge buyout from Auburn so paying him money wouldn't be an issue.

    I thought the guy was a tremendous coach at Boise State. The guy lost 8 conference games in 7 seasons at Boise. It just wasn't a good overall fit at Auburn, but the guy could coach both in preparation and on the sideline.

    If a head coach cares one iota about what fans on a message board think then he's not a coach that you want in charge of your program.  Every single fanbase in the country has a forum that is critical of their coaches when they lose and critical of their coaches when they win.  Fans are critical.  That does not factor in at all and it will be no different anywhere else they go.  Naive position.

    Interesting idea if Huff leaves

    We have a great brand and history

    It?s on our AD to sell our package and get us a great coach

    Agree, these are the kind of guys we need to go after. Successful FCS HC's and there are several out there. Screw the career assistant deal. I want someone who can run a program and bring in an experienced staff.

    That is correct.
