I don't like to lose, and that isn't so much because it is just a football game, but because defeat means the failure to reach your objective. I don't want a football player who doesn't take defeat to heart, who laughs it off with the thought, 'Oh, well, there's another Saturday.' The trouble in American life today, in business as well as in sports, is that too many people are afraid of competition. The result is that in some circles people have come to sneer at success if it costs hard work and training and sacrifice.- Knute Rockne

  • I think our fans like to just spin it...he never wanted to be here, he hates it here, his wife hates it here blah blah blah

No way he prefers so miss other than strained relations with our administration and tired of other bull %^&* associated with being out HC.

Looks like to me our administration and our fans are short sighted on this one.  Huff and our administration got in poker game and he won and his hand keeps getting better.  Now if he does end up at so miss, hell he takes a lot of our roster and staff, add few portal guys and he can get his P4 job with some winning seasons.

I'd prefer he built on this success this year for a year or two here, then move on and we enjoy some good years and get buyout.

As it stands? Looks like egg on our face as he goes so miss, a disappointing bowl game even if we win title as we will have interim HC, players opting out, and a lot of roster gone for next year and rebuild.

Oh I forgot we are hiring successful D2 or FCS guy who will bring a roster full of players

    Sh!t show if it happens.

You nailed my viewpoint. I would like Huff to hang around a one or two years and give Marshall a championship and then ride off to P5 job. That would be a win win for both. It would make Marshall a much more attractive job.

I think the spin that he or his wife don't like it here just magnifies the inferiority complex of some fans have about living or being from WV. They don't need to be defensive, just get over it.

Pruett left, in part, due to the bullsh*t from the administration. Aside of his questionable coaching at the end, he had a MU President take away the money for the IFP and use it on another project. Are we seeing history repeat itself when administrators make it difficult for a coach to do his job?

  • I think the QB situation last year was the wrong focus.  The primary offensive problem beginning the year prior and continuing through last year was the offensive line play.  Fancher was mobile and it was slightly less noticeabke, but the O-line was porous and any QB would not have had time to make a throw.  The OLine played great in the ND game, but after that Coach left we were really bad on the line play until this year.

Yet Fancher started most of the season for FAU and continued to produce the same lack of TDs and high amount of interceptions.

    6 TDs and 6 Picks in 9 games, 2 wins 7 losses

His backup played the last game and threw 5 tds with the same line Fancher had.

  • This isn?t about matching a USM salary offer. It?s been reported by USM fans that they are offering $2MM for assistant coaches. That?s twice what we pay. Package wise we would have to ante up another $3MM a year to match USM.

That doesn?t really make sense to me, risk your career with a total rebuild so your coordinators make more money?
They?ll still leave for a P4 coordinating job the first offer because it?s double.

But I thought S Miss didn't have the resources we have? That is all we have been hearing. So they ante up and we don't? Sounds like they are more serious than us. We even cut the BB HC pay from what 600k to 200k. I think we can all see from our leaders actions just how much they care.

For me, the amusing part is, when I went to so miss game several nice fans spoke to me and were so depressed about their program and being broke, one guy even said to me he wished they had money like we did. That took me back for a second.  Bit looking back on it, I can laugh at us now and shake my head as I realize these broke bastards are buying our coach after a title game.  Cheers!  I can't blame others we are all part of this dysfunction.  I just need to decide if I need to get off this train and I guess the next month or so will help me decide

Really? Any good head coach fights hard to get more money for their assistants. Pruett was always trying to get higher salaries for assistants. Football is a large organization and you want the best people available for the jobs. The best employees earn the highest pay.

    From a Mississippi news source.

    Why Southern Miss?

With things seemingly rolling at Marshall, why would Huff make the jump to a conference rival? And why would he make the jump to a program that has experienced the struggles Southern Miss has over the past decade?

Huff currently has a base salary of $755,000 per year at Marshall. Reports from the Duff Center are that Southern Miss is prepared to pay their next head coach in excess of $1,000,000 per year.

It also appears that Huff and the Marshall administration are at odds over off-the-field challenges regarding NIL revenues and payments.

Southern Miss is positioned better than most non-high revenue programs as it already has one of the best collectives among peer institutions.

Well, based on on-field results, that colletcives value ins't creating value on the field.

Yeah that makes sense, he hired Semore in 2023 and Doege hasn?t been on the staff a full year yet.

We aren?t talking about simply advocating for more pay, we are talking about career trajectory changing move, that everyone not associated with Marshall have considered a strange concerning step backwards

Pruett turned down offers that undoubtedly would have gotten more money for the staff, Houston was one.

The Governor of Mississippi slushed/embezzled 77 million dollars of welfare money, 11 million went to Brett Farve, who donated to So Miss, they built a Volleyball facility so Farve could watch his daughter daughter play in comfort.  Who knows what else.

Farve was given 1.1 million of his money to give speeches about Welfare.  Imagine the need to sell welfare in a speech.  Well ole Brett invested the money and never gave any of the speeches he was paid to do.  Then when the scandal broke out Brett remembered that million he took and never earned and returned it.

The state asked for the interest Brett earned while it sat in his portfolio.

Brett said no, that?s my interest that I earned on your money that was given to me in a backroom underhanded handshake deal, that I never did anything to earn, and was 100% going to keep, until I realized I committed a felony and I?m going to keep the interest and the State of Mississippi is suing him civilly.  Now Brett is asking for pity because he has an early diagnosis of Parkinson?s 14 years after the incident and he only has 100 million for his Dr appointments and medication.

  • If we match so Miss and lose Huff cause he wants to move on then so be it.

If we don?t even try to match Huff because we are too cheap then I?m done with Marshall football. Not even joking.

If we don?t try to match so Miss cause we want to move on and have a plan in place to make a splash hire (Rich Rod, Byron Leftwich, etc) then I?m fine with it.

  • Embarrassing performance breeds donors, at least big donors. I wrote checks well over my normal amount at the end of the Snyder era because I wanted us to win again.  So did a lot of other people. When we were told we needed an IPF to be competitive we wrote more checks.

As far as assistant pay, it makes it easier to hire, and more importantly, retain good coaches other than the coordinators.  The difference between a $125k DL coach and a $300k DL coach can be a game changer. Or if you have the budget to give a guy a $50k raise you show them you value their work.

If I were a G5 HC my goal would be to build a team, change the prices that don?t fit, and keep the ones that do and have that group follow me from job to job.

Amen to that. And if they don't have success immediately, that pipeline will dry up - quick.

Plus, with Huff winning the Division and making the title game, I am sure he is getting a nice bonus that was worked into his contract.

But, whatever, I just want this to be over, get a coach for 2025 and move forward.
