  • I wouldn't mind seeing someone like Montana State's Coach, Brent Vigen get an interview and look.
Regardless, we move on. It happens all the time with coaches everywhere. Some leave on good terms, some don't. It is the nature of the business. All I know is I love our Herd athletes in all sports. I will continue to support the Big Green in honor of my dad, who was truly the best Herd fan I ever knew, and I know anyone that has had the honor to be at a coach at this special university is blessed. GOOOOOO HERD!!!!

  • Is there any proof he can do more than be a coordinator? Can he run an entire program? Does he have experience picking coaches? Just calling plays has nothing to do with being a HC especially as young as he is and not having much experience. But maybe he would be a home run. If we are willing to take that big of a gamble that he may be the guy.

I agree. Don't know. But, at least, we have had a year to see what he may be like. Isn't it always a crap-shoot to bring in a new HC? Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be a Doege cheerleader. Just looking at all the angles.

Didn't we do that with our last two hires? At least he is an OC. Not saying, he would be my choice. Just pointing out the last two we hired never did what you are asking either.

Edit: We haven't hired a HC since George Chuamp

I wasn't really about it until I saw the tweet where he was screaming in the pressbox after the two-point conversion worked.  That's a guy that loves his job.  He's going to do whatever it takes to be good at it.  Maybe enough of Huff rubbed off on him to have the intangibles of dealing with his players.  I'd rather have a coach that needs to learn to make money for the team than one that needs to learn how to manage a game.  Huff had zero game management skills day 1.  Doege seems to have that already as you would expect from a system QB.

  • I don't know if Doege is ready to run a program, but I have seen a lot of good from him this year.  He has taken our absolutely putrid offense and made it something serviceable in just one year.  He appears to have been able to adapt his system to fit the strengths of the personnel we've got rather than the square peg, round hole stuff we've been doing, and he's coaxed the best season of Braylon Braxton's career out of him.  A lot to like from that.  Being a HC requires a lot more, but I'd want to have an interview with this guy about the head job.  Every head coaching search is a crapshoot in many ways.  If we have a guy here right now that can be what we'd need, I don't want to miss out.

  • OK, at a minimum, we have to keep him at OC if not HC! Raise, bonus...whatever. Can't let him follow Huff or entertain other programs.

It may be tougher to get the right HC if you dictate who he has as his coordinators.

Good point. But, isn't that part of all the decisions that must be weighed out? After all, isn't Doege a proven commodity already?

  • The mysterious Miss private jet is at HTS today with a departure time off 11:40AM and an arrival back to Mississippi today. Supposedly it is the private jet of a Southern booster, per a post from a Southern Miss fan on the CUSA board. It may be nothing, who knows?

But that plane is not the private jet that has been coming.  If you click that link you'll see that is a twin engine prop flying from HTS to Madison, MS.  No idea if it's related to Huff, but we're starting to get aircraft confused here.

  • Corny was made HC in waiting right after the 22-23 season, the year we went 24-8. NC State HC Kevin Keats had offered Corny the job as Assist HC and DD did not want to lose him. He went to Spears about making Corny the HC in waiting. Spears did not agree to it, so DD went over his head to Brad Smith. Smith agreed to it.

As to the 3 years looking for a new HC, I disagree. Corny has done a lot of good things in a short time. Thanks to DD, our NIL is crap. In fact, what little that was there went primarily to two players.  Corny has already got a commitment from 10 of basketball's biggest donors to drastically increase this for next year. Hiring Rob Fulford was a great move, Fulford has tons of AAU contacts. As to this team, there is clearly more athleticism at the guard position than last year, plus the defense has improved. The only real issue I see is lack of shooters and that is hard to fix when most your key players are in their last year.

You may be correct about CJ, but we will know very quickly if he can win. With basketball all you need is a couple of good players to turn around the program plus the SBC is a weak league. If he can run a program, he should winning asap. His transfers this year were not impressive ( I realize he had a late start so he gets a mulligan this year) so he had better be doing a better job recruiting.

The other problem I have with CJ is that he has never worked for a good college coach during his entire career. For the life of me, I never understood CJ staying with Dan. Dan couldn't coach and had no idea of how to run a college program. CJ should have taken the offer from Keatts and learned how a real college basketball program is managed.

Marshall sucking up to the D'Antonis is just another example of Marshall ineptitude at running a college athletic program. We did it before when we hired Stewart Way.

He had one good year. I would not agree that he is a proven commodity just yet. Most HC's want their own staff they have a relationship with and shares a similar offensive philosophy.

  • Back to my original question. Does anyone have insight or a take?

    A) Christian Spears and Charles Huff do not get along. So even if we offered more than anyone else that real friction is enough to drive a wedge.

    B) Jessica Huff truly does not like it here, happy wife happy life and all of that.

    C) All of these reports of flights coming in and out are all just speculation, there have always been flights in and out of the tri-state area. So nothing is happening.

    D) Big boosters have already locked in a replacement and Huff saw the writing on the wall.

  • It's not a singular issue.  Huff has been looking for ways out since day one, he's been named as potential candidates for multiple jobs every year he's been here, he's made little comments here and there calling out fans and admin. I don't think he gets along with spears, I don't think his wife likes it in Huntington and wants out.

  • This started last year.
Huff knew this was going to be his last season.

Marshall has been informally sending out feelers to certain desired candidates.

Huff has been focused on going out a winner and searching g for his next landing spot.
Sources please, I find it intriguing that you're claiming MU has been sending out feelers to certain desired candidates since last year.

  • You guys are making this way harder then it is:

    1) Huff only came here for what he thought would be 1-2 years. He?s that arrogant that he used us to move on. Period. When that backfired he?s been salty ever since.
    2) The Huffs want out. When plan A didn?t work, plan B comes into play which is get the heck out of htown.

It?s that simple. He underperformed his own inflated expectations and blames everyone but himself. Now, he doesn?t want to stay and honestly MU doesn?t want him. When you have ticked off half the alumni in the program, it?s hard to stay head of the class.

Spears and Smith want a winnner. Money is being ponied up to get the best we can. But we are recruiting to Marshall and it?s barely a top 75 job in CFB in a less than top 500 place to live. So it?s either a WV native wanting to be king of the hill, a failed HC somewhere else looking for redemption,or an up and coming coach looking at a 2 year gig similar to Huff.

Best we can do is hope we get a coach who can recruit based on past success and be prepared to lose him in 2/3 years. That?s the landscape of college football.

  • A message board is for these type of discussions.  I have a different take without any sources or knowledge.

What if it is a combination of all of this.  Huff may have wanted out but over time decided he liked it at Marshall.  He reports to Smith not Spears is my understanding (could be wrong) and sees what Smith has going on at MU and sees the growth and it changed his mind.  He sees he was able to get talent to MU (several new studs on this team) and win a championship.  His wife may have quit St Joe because she just wanted to spend more time with her young family.

This all could be posturing as he has a big time agent and after this weekend he secured a nice contract and raise for himself and his assistants.

    I hope he stays.

Consensus seems to be a combination.

A lot of people seem to really believe the wife thing. And many believe there was real tension between Spears and Huff.

I just think cooler heads could have prevailed. At the time of last year, I completely understand we would have low-balled Huff with a new deal. But as the team was coalescing this year after the Georgia Southern game, egos should have been put aside and real conversations should have been made.

It's not just about Huff and the singular performance of the team. It's also about continuity and the clean program he has provided. That should have been taken more seriously than allow the friction between the athletic director and the head coach to fester.

And if the president knew this, he should have taken action. But now here we stand.

No. I?m the poster that knows a very large prominent company would like to expand their business in this market and have personal ties to and support Rich Rod. I don?t think it?s contingent on RR but for a company to invest its buying a brand. RR is a brand in WV.
